@@BrianSostek Usually one of two things: 1) the sax player was quoting a song/jazz standard when he played the first part of the lick and the pianist instantly recognized that and played the following rhythm to match the sax OR 2) they maybe rehearsed before or have played together before and that is a lick that Bartley likes to do I guess the third option is just mind reading

His warmup on clarinet was so insane that it made me quit the clarinet and focus on guitar. patrick is incredible and i love him dearly.

Pat is a man of many styles. Knowing him, his bop stylistic choice (his main style) is purposely interwoven within the new orleans style of After you’ve gone while taking liberties to add some more soulful feel to get that emotion of joy out there. Even if I’m reaching in what I say, it’s amazing nonetheless because that’s in my opinion how it feels to listen to this.

@@xethanndonttryme6983 for sure. I am a lot more familiar with his playing now than I was when I made this comment (obviously), and he definitely has that New Orleans thing present (as well as many other influences) throughout all of his playing. Very much like Wynton Marsalis (who was a mentor of his) in that regard; not everyone is as heavily directly influenced by New Orleans, ragtime, stride, etc… as they are

He's an astute student of jazz history for sure! Personally, I'm hearing a lot of Johnny Hodge, Coleman Hawkins, and Lester Young, Swing vocab and language more than New Orleans style here. But NOLA started it all, so it all comes back.

I can’t understand those who give up because someone like Pat is capable of imagination-defying otherworldly solos like this. This right here is exactly what should drive you to be even half as good if nothing else! Jazz needs more people who want to achieve above and beyond. You learn from the greats and then you pour and pour every bit of skill and talent you have to becoming a beast of your own. I assure you Pat probably thought the same and here he is now just hitting his 30s or so being one of the best sax players alive. Incredible 😤👍🏾

For me the phrasing is also important. For example the way he approaches the first GM7. And then the repeated notes like G G# G G# G G#. Thanks again for this analysis, I'm playing bits of this solo everyday and it helps me understand how it works. The thing that is still a mystery to me is how it is humanly possible to improvise so well at that tempo 🤯

Excellent phrasing, motivic development, thinking outside the box while giving the listener exactly what they didn't know they wanted to hear, and the use of just pure jazz LANGUAGE. @@bounderby99 Yeah, that's probably what happened. They were already hyped at that moment, and it's one of the main qualities of that great recording I believe, the pushy nature of the entire solo. And here so soon in the solo, it's clear that Patrick really pushed everybody to go with him

@@SharpElevenMusic it’s a really cool effect, for sure! I think sometimes we spend so much time working on having perfect time (and for good reason), that we can forget that some tempo variation can be really awesome (such as in a break like Patrick does here)! Incredible solo, super well transcribed, there's one or two tiny errors (bar 152 the Bb should be a b, there was one more but I can't remember what) but I'm not too worried seeing how fucking hard it would be to transcribe this due to tempo, and ofc just how much is being played, plus that's a pretty minor nitpick to an otherwise awesome transcription.
