Looking to buy more basic tools like ratchets for removing blades, a torque ratchet for installing and an angle grinder for sharpening. I am good with the very basics (spark plug, air filter, oil change and also cleaning a carb. What size ratchets 3/8’? How long a handle on the torque? Do I need different length ones? Any specifics on the angle grinder? Also finding I need some longer tools to reach some bolts? Basic questions but kind of getting into this late in the game and don’t have too many supportive guys to guide me. Love taking things apart and putting them back together- nothing sweeter than making something work that didn’t! I’ve been doing that with firearms but love the mowers and generators mostly as so many people have no idea or want to take the time to treat them right. Love your tool references and links- keep them coming. Thanks for all the videos. Cynthia
@TheLawnmowerLady2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Ms Cynthia! I think you can pick up some inexpensive, but not cheap torque wrenches by Husky or Tekton at your local HomeDepo store. a 3/8" 10-100ft/lbs and a 1/4" 50-150 in/lbs should cover most any small engine work for not a lot of money. Anymore is just too much to spend on tools for home use. I'd stick to brushless angle grinder if you are grinding indoors, no sparks to ignite fuel vapors. If you can afford to buy just the specific tools you need, not jumbo sets of tools you may never use, it is a better investment. I find more selection of individual hand tools (sockets, screwdrivers, etc) at places like NorthernTool and HomeDepo rather than places like HarborFR. That said, HarborFR does have some good tools like impact sockets, punches, chisels etc. I find most any work can be accomplished with 1/4 sockets and drivers on these small engines. A deep set of sockets is helpful, and stick to 6-pointed sockets if you can. 12-point sockets will round off nuts and bolts easier than 6-point. Most of my tools are metric, and cover SAE sizes most all the time. All this advice assumes you are in the US? Cheers!

I love the video for several reasons. It is 5F in Flint Michigan right now and seeing the green grass and hearing the birds chirping is a welcome sound. Secondly, I didn’t have an angle grinder until recently when I purchased an auction lot that had a nice drill that I wanted and a bunch of other stuff including an angle grinder, older model Black & Decker from the days before B&D became a cheapie throw away brand. You have now shown me a possible use for it that I would not have thought of. Also, I had not seen the blade block device. I use block of wood method, but this is another option available. Thank you Lawnmower Lady!
@TheLawnmowerLady2 жыл бұрын
Nice score on that grinder. You prolly can still get another set of motor brushes, I just bought a 60 grit flap disk to try out. Supposedly takes off material faster, but I suspect I'll need to replace it more often. That disk I use int this video is the one that came with this grinder, 3 years ago or so. Probably the most important safety precaution that you can take when doing your own repairs or maintenance on a lawnmower is to disconnect the spark plug wire before you do anything else. This is especially true when doing anything with the mower blade.

I like to use the pipe clamp feature on my bench vise to hold the blade. Mostly only the corner does any work on the blade. Don't know what makes those juices so corrosive but they are. Think blade balancing is really worth it? Well, keep your saw in the wood and your stick on the ice!
@TheLawnmowerLady2 жыл бұрын
Great idea Mr Joe. My vice inside my little shop has those teeth, but this one outdoors does not. I had to move outside as everything in my shop became covered with a fine powder, and I figured breathing that dust in was no good for me either. I have gotten mowers with horrible vibration due to blade out of balance, Usually a chunk of metal broken off. It honestly doesn't add too much time to my sharpening. I appreciate you watching.

I sharpened my blades for years with an angel Grinder they work great. I noticed the owner of that mower is not using Hondas twin blades I'm surprised they cut the clippings very fine. What is an Angel grinder? Is it a brand of angle grinder?
@Inisfad2 жыл бұрын
What kind of disc did you use on the angle grinder? And if the blade isn’t exactly balanced, ie, if you had left it as it originally was with one side slightly heavier, how would that have affected the mower/cut? I love this channel….it’s geared toward the homeowner that wants to repair their small machinery, rather than some of the other channels who tend to give instructions suitable for full time mechanics. Thank you. Edit: I would think that using the 2x6 piece of wood is far better than that ‘blade stop’ thing. Kind of like inventing a better mouse trap that is a bit faulty…lol
@TheLawnmowerLady2 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate you watching and your comments Ms Inisfad. I'm glad to know my channel helps out. Someone else here mentioned a C-clamp would work great too as a blade stop. Hadn't thought of that I'm embarrassed to say ::facepalm:: A terribly unbalanced blade (this one was hardly at all) would cause vibrations that will eventually wear out things like the crank seal and all the oil could leak out. I think that disk is the one that came with that grinder, general purpose metal disc probably. I did just purchase a 60 grit flap disk to try out. Supposedly quicker to remove material. I'm dubious about the lifespan. I expect to be replacing it more often, That disk I use is 2-3 years old.

Are the tork specks on all HOND MOWER BLADES THE SAME??
@TheLawnmowerLady Жыл бұрын
I don't look up the OM for every single one, but those I have state 43ft/lbs as the maximum torque. That said, I usually set mine to 45 (the usual torque for Briggs & Stratton engines) as it's easier to read on my torque wrench. If you want to be sure, google your model number and owners manual and you'll get the most accurate info. Thanks for watching.

Nicely done! Like the torque wrench usage. Do you have a site you go to for torque specs for various makes of mowers? Do you have a shop manual like Chiltons or Haynes for references? Also, where do you get all the shirts with the various names??? You seem to have a whole bunch! It is just funny how you start each video clarifying what your name is not. Such an interesting personality!!

I picked 45 ft/lbs based on several different models (Honda says 43, MTD says between 38-50). Most all the bolts are the same size and thread pitch on these walk-behind mowers. Often ride on and zero-turn typically are higher, and I do look those up. I have a lot more name tags than shirts: velcro is my friend :) Cheers!

Good idea. When putting away my mowers for the winter, I coat the underside of the cleaned up deck with rust coverage paint. It dries rock hard and leaves a very smooth finish. Tried the oil trick BUT found that grass and debris always stuck to the oily surface. Many ways to skin a cat, though.
