Large companies like Lowes tend to have something called a nil return policy with their suppliers. Basically it would cost a shit tonne to keep returning everything back to the suppliers, so it does tend to get thrown away once returned to retail outlet. Sometimes they will send someone out to audit the returns, so you have to store them for a while before throwing away, but this costs money too, so more often than not it just goes straight in the bin/skip. Atleast, this is how it happens in the UK.

big difference from ductile (soft and quite pliable, will break before it blows apart in an explosive like manner) and tensile (harder and less easily bent, will crack apart once it has reach max bending limit thus why you see the previous WTC with lots of cracked off pieces), thus why cast iron is considered a ductile metal and used in some types of piping as well as for anvils hence they are easy to cut as seen with a hardened steel axe.

A smooth hard surface will do less damage to a blade than a rough hard surface. The blade is staying in tact because the tension is spread out across the edge. Asphalts jagged rocks make it easier since its uneven and provides contact points.

To answer the question "how is a rock harder than an anvil?" because it is. Rocks are hard but don't have a lot of tensile strength. They are also more brittle than an anvil. An anvil can just deform when the axe hits it.

So I know this is an old video, but. To swing anything like an axe or sledge, you let the tool do the work. One hand at the bottom of the axe, the other about middle. As you swing the axe from above your head, the hand in the middle slides towards the other. This creates a fulcrum type deal, making it easier on you and creating more force on the axe. The anvils didn't work because it's made of a softer steel. It's softer so that it does chip when being used; potentially sending a small metal piece flying who knows where. That also applies to a forging hammer.
@tony28002 жыл бұрын

Rock is generally harder but more brittle than steel. You could break a diamond plate relatively easily. You need tough materials for anvils that stick together if you strike it, the hardness is needed but secondary. That's why you never strike hardened steel with a hammer... It can loose shrapnel
