**** About the Video ****
We got an axe, we tried to dull it so we could sharpen it. And the axe was stronger than the harbor freight anvil. We finally found it's match. Then we show you the proper way to sharpen an axe. Then a surprise return at the hardware store. This has got to be the best way to sharpen my axe.

Large companies like Lowes tend to have something called a nil return policy with their suppliers. Basically it would cost a shit tonne to keep returning everything back to the suppliers, so it does tend to get thrown away once returned to retail outlet. Sometimes they will send someone out to audit the returns, so you have to store them for a while before throwing away, but this costs money too, so more often than not it just goes straight in the bin/skip. Atleast, this is how it happens in the UK.

To answer the question "how is a rock harder than an anvil?" because it is. Rocks are hard but don't have a lot of tensile strength. They are also more brittle than an anvil. An anvil can just deform when the axe hits it.
@Tmac-rv9wq
@Tmac-rv9wq 5 жыл бұрын
The anvil is “soft” because sometimes if you miss what you are working on and you hit the anvil and if it is to hard or brittle it can shoot a metal chip at you and it can stick into your leg

Two things from the video. Anvils are not tempered or heat treated. Axes are both. An axe is going to be slightly harder than an anvil, which is why it wasn't really warping the blade. Rocks are used to sharpen weapons, implying rocks are harder.

@title1091
@title1091 3 жыл бұрын
So I know this is an old video, but. To swing anything like an axe or sledge, you let the tool do the work. One hand at the bottom of the axe, the other about middle. As you swing the axe from above your head, the hand in the middle slides towards the other. This creates a fulcrum type deal, making it easier on you and creating more force on the axe. The anvils didn't work because it's made of a softer steel. It's softer so that it does chip when being used; potentially sending a small metal piece flying who knows where. That also applies to a forging hammer.

I legitimately died inside every time you hit that anvil and rock with the axe. This is horrific ax abuse and I won't stand for this

Before you left you should have slip the cashier a note with written description on how to find this video and told her that would explain why that transaction was so weird

A smooth hard surface will do less damage to a blade than a rough hard surface. The blade is staying in tact because the tension is spread out across the edge. Asphalts jagged rocks make it easier since its uneven and provides contact points.

Imagine if it got sent back to the manufacturer and they're all gathering around trying to figure out how the hell their axe delaminated

Anvils are softened so when you are hammering pieces don't explode off and hurt or injure you

The anvil is unhardened mild steel and the axe is probably a high carbon hardened steel. Soft steel is susceptible to bending and deforming, while the hard steel axe head is more durable.
