Finally! Someone on the internet that doesn't have three dozen steps to their sharpening system! It's all personal and many people get amazing sharpness out of their tools but this shows that for most jobs you don't really need it.

I saw this video, bought the plans, and spent a couple of hours building it. I was pleasantly surprised not only by the simplicity of the plans, but how well this jig worked. Thanks for doing what you do. Surprised Matthais hasn't built something similar to compete with you.

I just bought this plan yesterday. Built the jig today. Man does this thing work good. I'm going to make a second blade holder just for planes. On my chisel holder I'm going to add a positive stop to hold the chisel square consistently. Great jog John! Keep up the good work! Love all of your channels!

Great resource! Probably the most functional tutorial in your library. Who doesn't have an edge somewhere in their shop that needs to be kept sharp? Most times they get dull just by looking at them. And a super easy build. Will certainly be buying these plans before summer. Thanks for the video!

I've been messing around with sharpening fixtures and found this fixture has several features which should be considered by anyone wanting to make such a sharpening jig. First, the abrasive is held in place so it can't move, freeing up both hands to work the fixture. Second, it's large enough that you can grasp it with both hands making it grind faster and it's less tiring. Third, it's large size makes it less likely to rock or tilt which improves its accuracy. Good job, John!

Built this last winter, now I wonder how I did without it! It's killer and fast! I have never been able to get my chisels so sharp. There was a period where I was looking for more chisels to sharpen and did all my father in laws chisels for him....yea I was REALLY loving my jig! Correction still do! Thank you John!

John, I built the sharpening jig and absolutely love it. As I used it, I realized that my Work Sharp didn't even come close to the good job this jig does. Thanks. I would really like to see an adaptation or similar jig for knife blades. Hank.

Thanks for the plans on the sharpening jig. I made one for sharpening my skew chisels on the lathe. I have never had an edge as sharp as my chisels are now. I didn't realize that they could cut so well.

Thank you for the free plans. I was thinking about buying a sharpener, but they are very expensive. You saved me a lot of money which I can use for other things. I will build one for 25°, 28° and 30° instead of making it adjustable, so I will be secured for these degrees. Willy from Belgium.

Awesome and really useful jig. Sharpening by hand is OK but those kind of jigs are much better in my opinion. It would be really cool if you could came up with some kind of jig, for sharpening round gauges or V chisels! I know I ask way too much. Perhaps you could just consider my comment as food for thought! Thanks for sharing that awesome tool with us!

I built it!!! I'm restoring two old Stanley's from early 1900s and your jig seemed necessary to the project. I must say that I my sharpening problems are solved! I experimented w some weight ( 4' square, 1' thick steel plate) set o top. (My jig is flat on top). and it worked great w some old eft up chisels.

Hi John, I suspect that you are reinventing the wheel but with less success. Unlike your stellar plans for a router lift (which I built and use frequently and would readily recommend to woodworkers), you are creating a jig which will plow trenches into your sharpening stones, unlike a roller sharpening jig which can be moved around the surface to eliminate that problem. A few loonies spent on a decent roller jig is a way better option.

Considering how standard most chisels are and that most people have a set, i'd probably invest time in making groove plate that sticks underneath the holder. That way you'll always get the perfect shave. :D And it's very easy to make too, you just take a 2 3 mm piece of plywood, cut it to shape to fit inside the clamp, and then grove it with the table saw to fit the chisel.
@aserta9 жыл бұрын
Oh and this jig could also work as a stone fixer. We all have one or two stones that are lopsided or worn off in the center. If you get a very hard piece of metal and affix it at a sharp angle, you can scrape the surface, i'm willing to bet that with a home hardened piece you could true up a stone within 20 scrapes even for really bad ones.

@daifeichu9 жыл бұрын
Agree 100% that there's no need to go crazy with super fine stones and multiple strops different compounds. A medium and fine are perfect for most edges. I find that I do most of my sharpening on a DMT diamond stone that has medium on one side and fine on the other. Does your jig handle stones that are of different thicknesses? Great video btw.
@daifeichu9 жыл бұрын
Just read the article. So the thinner diamond stones will work with adjustment. Just bought the plans as well. Can't wait to get into the shop.

As always, excellent video! Question: I've watched a LOT of videos on chisel and plane iron sharpening. So far, you are the only one who recommends a SECOND bevel on chisels and planes. Why do you recommend that?
@The4thDensity6 жыл бұрын
IMHO, I think the reason for the second bevel on chisels and planes is that you do not need to grind/remove so much metal to achieve a cutting edge. The next time he sharpens the chisels or planes, as long as the first bevel is sound he doesn't need to make that grind again any time soon. Only the second bevel needs to be redone, thus saving time and precious metal on the chisels until it's time to grind the first bevel again.

Nice simple build, I was wondering of you could put in a couple of set-screws to adjust the two angles with so you set them once and then just tilted the guide block to the other set-screw somehow. Or maybe it's not necessary as a couple of marked lines will do just fine. :-P
