The right way to sharpen an axe is so that it performs it's function correctly. It's not a razor, it's a forest axe designed for cutting across the grain of the wood. An edge that is too fine is easily chipped.

I was always confused by this. I would expect (with my limited knowledge of woodworking and tool sharpening), that it doesn't matter how fine your edge is, but rather the angle at which it's sharpened. Or is that what you mean with 'fine edge'? Im sorry for any spelling errors, as i am not a native speaker.

@@vanos3378 i think he means that a razor sharp edge is so sharp because it is thin..like a razor. An axe, more so a splitting axe is kind of dull, the main reason for it is that the more thick the axehead is, the more pressure it can put in the wood to split it. Now, with these axes, these bushcraft axes, are kind of in-between, more so multi-tools: They are designed to be able to fell a smaller tree, and split it, but also to have enough sharpness for more precise tasks, like making feather sticks. If you notice the axe head itself, your hand easily fits under it, so you can grab the axehandle just below the iron, and make those precise movements. These tools are meant to be able to deliver high power, and also fine working.

That's really wonderful, but usually don't have an axe so sharp, because spending many months in the wild I don't have all those sharpening stones with me but simply 2 Fallkniven DC4 stones and what I can get with that is not a shaving-sharp edge, but an edge that still works well for me.

I personally wouldn't advise anyone to use Jap Whetstones to sharpen anything as they are very difficult to use correctly and cost way more than they are worth. I build, restore and setup axes all day and use a 400grit sanding disk to produce a very sharp chisel in seconds - if I want to go further I use a smear of cutting compound and a buffing wheel to produce a mirror finished razor edge. At home, find some old timber (Plywood works well) and use some wood glue to stick a sheet of 400/600/1200 grit sand paper on it before cutting into one inch slices - you'll end up with what looks like oversized nail files which are perfect for sharpening almost anything to a polished finish.

That is your way. Too sharp can chip the edge easier.

Nice job! Do you know the angle set of your ceramic-stick sharpener? I have one that has two set angles: 15deg and 20 deg (for kitchen knives and more hefty blades). Would either of those match your two-rod sharpener? Also, do you ever use a puck in the field for touch-ups? Keep up the good work!

Great question. My two ride ceramic sharpener has 15°and 20° also. In the field I will either use a diamond and ceramic sharpener. I just bought the grand force Brook puck I will do a Full review once I used it a little.

The GB puck is a good item, but IMHO overpriced (same item as the Wetterlings puck). I've seen that some folks really like the GB axe file (both regular and diamond), as it is 1) small 2) has a wooden handle that is curved to help keep you from getting cut, and also to guide your file to the appropriate angle of the axe blade, and 3) it's small and easy to pack. Happy trails!
