I had a brief online exchange of information with Brian Wilhoite of SMKW about the some of the misconceptions about the SharpKidZ program. This is an attempt to clear up the misconceptions.

Wasn't really talking in person this time. It was an exchange on Facebook. He's a super friendly guy.

Sounds like a good program they put together. In the same spirit about 8 years ago I put together several sets of Frost knives that included a pocket knife/fixed blade combo with the same or similar handle covers. Local Boy Scouts were the recipients because of their involvement in a very successful community project. The reception of the knife sets (6 total) were mixed. All of the scouts who received the knife sets were thankful however 2 sets of parents took away their sons knives and handed them back saying something to the effect that they did not want their son to become a knife kid. These were scout parents...I was a bit stunned that they did not get the full message (knife uses of the knife, knife safety, knife respect).

The brain washing is so strong. We want our kids to be safe but fail to realize that they are safer is they are educated, prepared, and self reliant.

Really like hearing the history of this knife and the Sharp kids idea. Sharp kids is a great Idea and I hope they get it going again. Off subject question. Did you ever Decide to pick up a Rough Ryder Big Horn Lockback RR2589? If so Have you thought about doing a review Video on it? I have been giving it a second look, and I'm thinking about maybe picking one up. Anyway, Great Video. Thank you.

Off topic....I think SMKW should move all Rough Ryder Reserve knife production to USA and contract Bear and Son to make them. What do you think?

I have had mixed experiences with Bear & Son. I know they are all the rage right now because of the sheepfoot barlow. However, I am also very familiar with the "Remington" BSA knives they made in the past which were all over the place when it came to QC. Not to mention the Bear MGC Scout knives were abysmal. Their first batch of Knives they made for Queen a few years back were also not well received. Bear and Son also made the later Col. Coon knives for SMKW. They were okay but nothing to right home about. (I even did a video about these knives and said this is what you would get in a USA made Rough Ryder) The Current USA made Queen Knives are being made by B&S, again. This are made in small numbers. And even some of these have been problematic. My feeling is Bear & Son would not have the time or staff to churn out a line of USA made Rough Ryders in the numbers SMKW would want and to the same standard of quality and price as what is coming from the factory in China. I'm also not sure how such a move would prove advantageous for Bear & Son. I have not picked up one of the new Bear & Son knives yet as I fear they are being over-hyped at the moment. I will be in a position to inspect the knives in person soon. As I said, my personal experience has been mixed. Bear & Son seems to do okay with a traditional pocket until they have to put a second blade on it. At that point, all bets are off. And their bone tends to be second rate when it comes to jigging. You're better off sticking to the rose wood. Just my personal experience. My opinion might change in the future.
