I just found a copy of Half a King at my local secondhand bookstore! I am only waiting to collect the rest to read this series. I never hear anyone talking about it so your video was a great surprise!

That's great! Yeah Shattered Seas flew under the radar a bit, with booktube. I think many reviewers don't talk about YA and skim past it. Hope you enjoy it!

Grimdark sounds interesting from this As an avid YA reader I would love to see your take on Cassandra Clare’s Shadow hunters, there is at least 3 different series the last I checked

I love me some Joe Abercrombie! Looking forward to The Devils. I loved the ending of The Mist. It was unexpected and brave storytelling.

I massively agree! We need more risky storytelling. But like... well-thought-out risks. 🤣

Just ordered book 1 of immortal investigations!! Can’t wait to read it. Also another great video❤❤ Oooo also have you read/thought about making a video of Janny Wurts wars of light and shadow. I was thinking about starting that for my next big fantasy series

Whoo! Thanks for ordering my book! Yeah I'm planning to start reading Wars of light and Shadow asap. But a video on it will be a while off yet.

I love a good YA although normally I classify them as always having a happy ever after. I guess less so with this series. 😂 I haven’t read any Joe Abercrombie but you have me intrigued whether this might be a great way to be introduced to the author. Off to check my local library! Another amazing video, thanks! 😊
@cronkthebookguy6 күн бұрын
Awesome! Yeah I think Abercrombie has been very smart in writing a 'gateway grimdark'. It'll help more people know if they'll like his wider series. Enjoy!

@ Fun fact. My library (Canada) has this series classified and shelved in the adult fiction section (and we do have a YA classification). I watched your Darker Shade of Magic video with the same idea. Very interesting how books end up being labelled.

So it seems like this series is pretty good, but even in the realm of _mature_ YA, there's definitely better to read? Any quick recommendations for the upper ages of the YA genre?

Mentioning about the YA genre, recently I have given a thought to His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. Do you recommend it? Or even better, will you do a review about it?
@cronkthebookguy4 күн бұрын
That's a really interesting idea. Being fully honest here, I read His Dark Materials about 15 years ago when I was a devout Christian. I remember being... outraged... But now that I'm an atheist, it might be really fun to revisit. I'm sure my response would be very different.

I absolutely adored the entire "First Law world" cycle, but the Shattered sea did not do it for me, unfortunately 😩. I was bored and distracted pretty much throughout the entire series. Perked up a bit, when I guessed what kind of world that was, but the author didn't do much with it at the end, imho.
@cronkthebookguy6 күн бұрын
That is fair enough! Not every book is right everyone. Yes the world secret was a highlight for me and I'm sad I couldn't discuss because of spoilers. 😁 Thanks for watching!

At this point, I'm convinced that The Last Jedi's biggest flaw is apparently putting people to sleep. As I've yet to see a criticism of it that doesn't rely on missing everything that happens in the second half of the movie. And frankly, I'm tired of the lie about "subverting expectations." That was used exclusively to talk about how The Force Awakens is too similar to a new hope by some estimations. It's just saying the last jedi isn't a retreat of the empire strikes back. Stop divorcing it from context because the movie didn't magically make you 12 again.
