My biggest complaint is that the DLC didn't add enough toys to play around outside the DLC. No new perks, ship parts, new system, the new gears are disappointing both in quality and quantity, etc. I was initially running a new character for the DLC, but along the way, I realized not enough was changed to make the experience feel fresh again, so I went back to my old character.

For me this was also a pretty big letdown, particularly the "new" energy weapons. They are functionally reskins of the existing ones, the EditorIDs for them are even things like "VaruunOrion" for the Longfang.

@SkintSNIPER262 Because the base game is deparately in need of improvements in many departments. Take melee weapons, for example, which is suffering from serious lack of variety. Also, by systems, I meant game systems, not star systems. Lastly, this was their big DLC debut, and a chance to clear some of the bad names, and costed $30. I definitely expected more.

That will be in the other drip fed, price gouged MTXs packs rebranded as "expansions." End of an era after Zenimax (BGS) started chasing nickel and diming monetizing to increase their valuation so MS would buy them up. Glad I got to enjoy their older games when they cared, before they got too old and rich and lost their passion. Its over for these now snake oil salesmen.

@@GophersVids That wasn't my argument though. All three games are targeting a similar demographic of open world RPG with lots of play time. Then you can look at the quality within and judge from there, as well as who made these games (e.g. indie vs AAA). Lots of games out there I'd recommend over Starfield while being much smaller budget and shorter, and I'd value them as higher quality overall. As for CDPR setting that benchmark really high, I'd like to argue that Bethesda were benchmark setters a long time ago when they didn't have such competition. Now that they do have such competition, I hold Bethesda to those new high standards, which they do not meet when compared to even an almost decade old game (Witcher 3). It's fair game to compare them and their value proposition as a customer who's trying to make an informed purchase. EDIT: Heck I don't even need to compare to other studios. I can compare Shattered Space to Dawnguard and Dragonborn DLC, and I don't think it comes even close to either of them. Many of the reasons were listed by you in the video too, such as vistas variety. Dawnguard had smaller places like Dayspring Canyon, but also big barren land in the Soul Cairn, which is offset by the beautiful, interconnected landscapes of Forgotten Vale. It also presented more choices in the RPG aspect (choosing Dawnguard or Volkihar) and more gameplay toys to play with (crossbows, vampire lord, werewolf expansion, etc).

@@MuraCasardis I would argue that Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 do not target an entirely similar demographic as Bethesda RPGs. What makes Betheda RPGs special (for me at least) is the freedom of character development. In Cyberpunk and The Witcher, the player plays the role of a pre-defined character. It doesn't matter how you make your character in Cyberpunk/Witcher, you are V/Geralt. This is why I only played through Cyberpunk (and the Witcher 3) once, while I've played through nearly all the Bethesda RPG games multiple times. (Fallout 4 is the one exception; I only finished FO4 once... Likely due to always feeling that I was playing as Nate/Nora whenever I tried to play through again. I was not a fan of the FO4 protagonists.) That said, I agree that Phantom Liberty and The Witcher 3's expansions provide a greater value than Shattered Space.

I am one of those people that didn’t like Starfield base game, but liked Shattered Space. More than anything, I wanted to join house Va’ruun. Easily, imo, the coolest group in Starfield. With this DLC, I finally get the do what I wanted to do most in the universe for roleplay. The writing was alright, better than Freestar, Pirates, or Corporate. I liked some of the creepy aspects they tried, and some of the npc interactions were really good(pretty much the side content). It has its flaws for sure, the city layout is bad, not a lot of new equipment, lackluster rewards, suffers from no consequences of actions like the base game. Like you said, going on this quest feels like joining a faction quest line. You are doing the Va’ruun quest line, and that feels weird as a DLC. Should have been base game or a cheaper price at least. I’ve completely finished the DLC now, and I don’t want to leave Dazra. The rest of the universe feels so boring in comparison to them.

I am on the same boat more or less, i did not dislike the game, i disliked the wasted potential that became more and more apparent the deeper you get into the game, from the background traits that get nowhere and even gopher seems to have tossed asside (i remember vaguely he picked the fan and then imediatly told him to go away, had the game more interesting writting maybe he would have met him again over the jorney , but instead is a, oh you did not want the perk, alright, bye), the fact they went out of their way to write a backstory 100 times more interesting that the actual game, where are the bloody mechs? is the player supposed to believe than even the pirates, in a universe where there is a planet filled to the guills with mech parts, would not use mechs cause "its ilegal!" same for using alien animals. I finished the story, don't plan on redoing it, and find it surprising that even Gopher has not abandoned the game by this point. Then again the man has a long story of managing to take bethesda's lack of effort and making good content out of barebones base

I bought the Starfield premium edition which came with the DLC, so I checked it out when it released. Played it as I normally would (doing most side quests, listening to most dialogue, looting). Took me about 15-20hrs. Overall it was just ok. Gameplay felt the same as base game. Story was alright, cool to learn more about Va'ruun lore. Graphics/art style was actually good, took many photos. But I agree, it's just more Starfield. Doesn't really compare to DLCs like Dragonborn or Far Harbor. Hope they can now move on to ES6 and focus on their strengths (world/exploration, roleplay, replayability)

So you blew £100 on SF, as I did? Do you feel your money was well spent? I never imagined it could replace Elite Dangerous for me, but it did. In being a game I never play, but just boot up for 10mins every update or two... I've not played it all year. My MQ broke, I waited months for a fix, none came, and that was that. The most expensive game I've ever bought, by default making it one of the biggest disappointments. And I started on Morrowind. To be fair, I lost faith or hope in BGS with Oblivion, but by Skyrim I'd accepted what they became and enjoyed them for it - toymakers, not artists. Even as a toy, SF is poor. Fallout 4 genuinely seems so much more accomplished and, crucially, cohesive. SF made better structural decisions for a role-player, but executed on them poorly. Whereas F4 didn't even both to pretend to be a proper RPer, and at least committed to its fixed linearity. Shattered Space should never have demanded the player join that bunch of cartoon clowns. £30 is *expansion* pricing - not niche faction pricing. Such content should not require any RP commitment in that sense. As Gopher touched upon, Far Harbour should be the model for such expensive post-launch content. And Emil thinks this is their "best" game yet? He is an unfathomably deluded person, and I just hope - against all likelihood - he leaves the company before he can help ruin TESVI.

@@SabiJD Got to say played it on Gamepass because I was unsure about a lot of the prerelease hype for Starfield. When I first played Starfield I was trying to play it like a BGS game and it varied from annoying to frustrating. When I started playing it by going from quest objective to quest objective with no real RPing involved it was a fun enough waste of time. However during my third NG+ the feeling of annoying to frustrating was back as the default experience. Since it was on Gamepass I think I had a better impression of the game then I would have had if I bought the game. It's strange because it was on Gamepass Starfield was a fine enough toy to borrow your metaphor but it's more like a dollar store toy my parents gave me to shut me up. Once the initial fun is done it went in the toy box never to come back out and I'm okay with that.

@@demistr7435 The many people who don´t like Starfield will not stop posting comments on this game so there will be kind of interest enough. But seriously - I see many flaws, not so many as others but what´s more important - Starfield has really big potential IF (yes, that´s a big if) the modding scene sees the potential as well. I´m playing the current Star Wars Genesis modlist and as a big Star Wars fan, this might be one of the greatest experiences when you like that franchise. The Bethesda style gameplay fits perfect to that universe. This modlist will grow bigger and bigger and that´s a good sign, even if you don´t like Star Wars or think it´s a silly idea to more or less completely change the base of a game. The reason why it´s a good sign - more people will notice the success of that modlist and maybe that will inspire others to think about other mods for the base game. The Alien franchise could fit perfectly, too. While I really get that Starfield is a disappointment for many, it´s by far not as bad as the loudest people want the world to believe. But to the original comment: I have doubts about further big sized DLCs. Maybe Bethesda gets a last chance, maybe they are so deep in the development of it, that it wouldn´t make sense to stop it, but Starfield clearly isn´t a big thing for Microsoft or the bigger audience. It´s not a cool game and outing yourself as someone who likes it is like speaking about your job at the tax office. Everyone I know who play games has an opinion on Starfield - not one has played it, even with a gamepass account.I don´t need more content, there is enough space in the game and we have enough tools to make endless more. I only want that Bethesda fixes the last bugs the game might have and - ok - that would be a cool thing - do some cool melee animations because they cannot be modded by now. We need them for lightsabers...

I think the storyline forcing you to join the faction is reflective of the bigger issue with Starfield as a roleplaying game in that it's really more of a themepark with separate rides that don't really tie together into a cohesive experience. You have the different rides (quest lines) you can get on but once you're on, the quests more or less dictate how you can approach the problems and often even your attitude towards things. They usually completely fail to acknowledge any past interactions with the same characters. It can still be fun (and was for me), when the expectation matches reality, but it makes for a really poor roleplaying experience.

Great point about it being an odd quest line for this kind of DLC. I do tend to play my first character in a Bethesda game as someone who joins everything and sort of lies about how committed they are to each one, but on any subsequent playthrough I tend to pick and choose more accordingly to the character, and it is odd to have a DLC feel that exclusive to a certain kind of character. That being said, it did feel like a House Varuun faction quest line was missing while playing the base game, and I’m glad they got around to including one, even if it doesn’t feel great that it’s locked behind an additional $30. Glad I got the deluxe version, so at this point the money was already spent.

The Soul Cairn comparison is spot on by the way - by the time I was almost 100% done with everything I was beginning to irrationally dislike the colour red and longed for the bright, sun soaked beaches of Paradiso. Yes, I needed an in-game holiday after the DLC... not sure if that says more about me or the game!

I think it's just the place. It's one of the reasons I feel Starfield falls a little flat compared to Skyrim. It's TOO alien for too much of the time. Even Morrowind, as alien as it might have seemed, was more 'normal'. Sure there were giant mushrooms instead of trees in some places, but even they felt oddly familiar. I think a lot of it comes down to lighting and colour as well. I found myself longing for browns and greens.

I really loved Starfield, so I’m down for this. I get that the game clearly isn’t for everyone, but I still get surprised by just how negative the vibe is surrounding Starfield in the community at large. Imo, it was a pretty welcome step back towards their roots from what Fallout 4 was, but maybe we’ve learned that Fallout 4 represents what most people expect a Bethesda game to be 🤷.

Speaking purely for myself the lack of seamless open world exploration just killed it for me. It feels like Bethesda has stagnated in a lot of areas and are still trying to make games the same way as they did twenty years ago and it's not working, overly rely on the community to fix things via modding and lacking things like a working map and FOV slider at launch are mind boggling. I honestly hoped Bethesda to learn from the criticisms of Fallout 4 and continue to improve on the things that worked like factions and companions and they didn't.

I played this with a new character who had just reached level 35 and was not yet starborn. I had Andreja with me but we hadn't yet reached the romance stage--during the end quest of the DLC she finally told me about her two friends we need to track down. She did have a lot to say, which was cool, and the quests were interesting enough, but yes, disappointing that there isn't enough new and different weapons or other things. Might play this another time as a starborn just to see if that's different, but to be honest I don't really enjoy the NG+ mechanic of Starfield.

That "Missing Something" that you detail in the video is exactly how I've felt about EVERY SINGLE AREA in Starfield, when its good its fantastic but those moments where its like " okay. Where is..anything? Theres..nothing." Like when you go to London on Earth and the only thing is the shard? like..really? reaallly really? this is a fantasy game we can pretend that some other bits and bobs and explorables are still visible, wheres the trench that the Thames once filled, where are the weird Britishisms, because if the NASA Building over in Houston survived to have SO MUCH just for story purposes, then why not other places? Its literally one of the most "historically important planets" in the game and ..yet its just..Dust which seems like such a waste? and Other planets also lack that "SOMETHING" at times , even the ones with trees. I did actually by in large ENJOY the game but I wouldn't put it on my highest priority to play the DLC as compared to playing the new Zelda game or even Assassins creed (Grumble grumble Ubisoft...)

People may still be complaining but this DLC addressed several issues that people criticised the base game for. Its all contained hand curated content with unique POIs. The Lost and Found and follow up quest although short were very poignant and probably the most memorable side quests. The new equipment is really great looking even if some of them are reskins or mashups. The new armor is probably my favourite in the game so far besides UC Sys Def which is really hard to find.

I never finished Starfield, hell I never even really started the main questline. I did sidequests first to try to get money for gear and help kit out my ship so I could have my 'home base' with all the crap I'd store for crafting and stuff. Course I had to keep making it bigger or otherwise expanding my cargo capacity. And I hit some fun questlines. But things just, well, never felt good. Gun wise or gameplay wise after you gotta clear out another abandoned base taken over by raiders/smugglers/pirates/ect. And I tried actual base building, got very bored cause I couldn't get the materials to actually build the things I need/wanted. So, here comes the DLC and it's a faction questline (which is odd, you'd think they'd want all that in the main game, or at least have ways around it or make it more interesting). Don't get me wrong, DLC has done faction questlines before... but they've typically been NEW factions that they added with the DLC, like Dawnguard giving the titular Dawnguard and the Vampires. Va'ruun is very much mentioned and part of the main game, so having a 30 dollar DLC to handle them feels weird and bad. Maybe if it was half that at most. Either way, more Starfield doesn't really excite me. Maybe I should restart the game, and just do MSQ.

I recommend you getting to know all the companions, by taking them to all the faction quests, then get their individual quests. For example start the uc quest with sarah, make sure you please her. Etc Then continue to the constellation main quest, trust your most beloved companion to remain behind in the lodge when you hear Vladimir at The Eye station make a distress call. Then you have to continue onwards, getting all powers till they level to X (10). You do the first game all nice and pleasing your companions. Then in newgame+, you let all your experience and feelings decide on whether you want to remain always being the same good, or seeing where you fall.

There is no shame in not playing it more, the game has a few good points, but they get drowned in the sea of bladness, exploration is boring, the universe does not make sense, the companions are generic and mostly boring, the factions are boring and most are covoluted so you don't finish it too quickly, and the story is a mess that gives you no reason to play it more than once, choices don't change a thing other than the ending, all planets not part of the main story are just procedural generation. Some people can enjoy it, but its, if not a lost cause, one that would require the lead writer to go away or get off his high horse

The reason I tried it was hope. It didn't help much. After about 30 minutes I was tired of it. Reminds on Event Horizon. At least the start. I find it quite fascinating that you have so much fun with this game. I'm guessing we are almost the same age so we both have seen a lot games. But I can't find no fun in this game. The lack of exploration, which always was the key for their games is not good in this game. Typical writing, Typical bugs and AI behavior and on top of that all the loading screens. After all these years, Starfield was the first Bethesda game which got un-installed after a few weeks. A few weeks ago I tried it again. I needed to force myself to finish it and I guess I'm done with it now. Starfield misses all key features that kept me playing all other games before. They must create at least 100 more random assets to avoid running into the same location again and again. That was the point where I lost it. I was exploring a listening station for fun and after that I decided to follow a quest. It took me lightyears away on a planet. Just to find the same station, which all the same enemies and loot at the same place. Like totally brainfuck. After discovering the totally low number on assets it was quite clear that I will run into this moment almost on every planet. And this sucks. And so I lost the interest on this game. Like many I guess.

The whole join them to do it is what I was expecting and why I didn't buy it. Bethesda didn't learn from people complaining about Nuka World when they had no interest in becoming a raider and the huge letdown that main quest was when taking out the raiders... kill the leaders and turn the power on compared to dozens of quests letdown. @@alexandrewildfire6405 Well, I think it'd be bit unrealistic for them to address the problem in the base game retrospectively. The best they could do is add onto it retroactively using DLC gameplay mechanics. If you tamper with the core of the story, it's gonna break the game. Nuka World is inherently an evil DLC and rejecting it outright is a choice and one that's even acknowledged by the game itself. Like Phantom Liberty, you can miss out on the main quest if you do something "wrong", but it'll still let you engage with most of the content including some sidequests.

I think regarding the price, Bethesda / Microsoft should really overthink how they will sell the next DLC. Because Shattered Space really wasn't worth the money it costs. If it was 15 or 20 €/$, I think it would be okay, but definitely not 30. If the next DLC is of similar quality and pricing as Shattered Space, I don't think I'll buy that. I think for the sake of getting some goodwill from their customers, they should rebrand the Premium Edition and the Shattered Space Expansion as a season pass that gets you at the very least the next DLC as well. Only then would I consider it my money well spent. And the next DLC needs to actually deliver and be of Far Harbor quality, instead of being somewhere between Automatron and Nuka World in terms of quality like Shattered Space is, otherwise I am not seeing a bright future ahead for this game's future.

I spent £100 at launch, drifted away after my MQ broke, and haven't touched it all year, bar brief checks of updates (the vehicle is a joke. that control method on joypad is hideous). This faction-specific DLC just kinda makes me angrier. Unless their next premium add-on is, as you say, on par with Far Harbour, or Point Lookout (or Shivering Isles, though I never personally liked that), then they should not charge a single space dime. They're grifting off of the community via the """Creations""" tab already - they do not need another boost to revenue. I was waiting for mods to save/fix SF. BGS seem completely detached from reality, based on that muppet Emil's remarks, so they cannot be trusted to do it. But SF's flaws of design are so fundamental and technically structural that such hopes seem countered by all evidence up to this point. I so hope Emil leaves BGS before he can help ruin the next TES. I never really cared about Fallout. SF is a new [bland] IP. But Elder Scrolls? C'mon, they can't completely drop the ball on that, too... That's the IP that truly matters for Bethesda.

I enjoyed it, & was happy with the additions, exploration & extra lore. The unique landscape, atmosphere & mechanics were fun & interesting to interact with. Overall if you enjoy Starfield it's an excellent addition to the game. My only gripes were story wise, I didn't like being the center of the story, but you are put into this 'hero' role like the majority of the other major questlines which is getting a bit old, the story also feels like it comes to a very sudden & abrupt end. It felt very jarring at the end, like you were going 100mph then suddenly it's over, characters didn't really seem to react to the end event, it was just finished & I really feel like there needs to be a break at the end, more dialogue wrapping everything up. As it stands it felt really awkward at the end, and I was just left standing in an empty house, in Andreja who had nothing to say.. I'll look forward to some more exploration tonight & wrapping up a couple of side-quests and next time playing it has a proper & zealous believer in the great serpent! 😂

I wanted more lore on va’arun & I definitely got that. The convoluted political structure of this cult and the slow reveal of the speakers sinister plans was well done. Plus some of the side quests and other locations had me hooked. My main nitpicks: we needed more unique weapons/armor, Andreja needed to say more, this DLC should be $15, and I wish we had a cool spaceship battle. Notice how when Gopher says there is tons of new dialogue, he follows with that there is a lot of lore to learn more about and things like that. As usual with Bethesda, they don’t actually write dialogue, there are no true conversations. There is one character who is an interviewer and servant, then there is the other, who is there to provide exposition and tasks. This is not at all a dig at Gopher or anything, I’m a massive fan, and I understand that our analysis of dialogue will depend on the standards Bethesda has set for themselves. The dialogue in Bethesda games work well if you do not care about roleplaying, but if you are actually trying to play a character, you quickly realize that not a single character in their games treat you like one. There are a few, very rare exceptions.

Turn down the particle effects to resolve. You can raise it afterwards. As far as the DLC goes, overall, I feel that the Natural Disaster gives you a feeling that you MUST focus on it at the cost of the rest of the content, unlike the "Fog" in Far Harbor giving you a feeling that you can take your time. I feel that this backfired and created all the "Not enough content" complaints.

Yeah, premium edition here. Haven't started the dlc yet since it isn't something my character would do. I'll wait till I start a new Ve'run/Andreja focus character.

@@mysteriousfox88 Yeah, am nearing the end of the MQ, so that was my plan. Just honestly not very motivated to finish it. I think the Starborn are the worst Bethesda antagonist so far and I was let down by their reveal.

Played it for about an hour. While I enjoyed getting to the new planet and the opening narrative, I ended up getting bored rather quickly. There's a particular mini quest that triggers after walking out of the gate, it was one of those "automatic" quest that you pick up from overhearing a conversion. Those particular types qusts, were the reason I installed the mod Take Your Own Time. It "blocks" those types of qusts, but only in the Bade Game. I did have fun with the Rev-8 while exploring but then again I can drive that anywhere. Oh and there are new Melee weapons you must have missed. They looked fun, but I didn't get a chance to try them. I did try one of the new rifles, but only briefly. I went back to my Legendary SMG. By the way, I used my level 100+ Character that I beat the game with (NG+ 10). Oh and I bought the Premium Edition, when SF first released. Cheers. Edit Base* Game

I will say I'm on my second playthrough start it out unmodded now on my modded playthrough and on my modded playthrough I have not finished her quest.... It even affects her quests in a minor way but still affects it and I thought it was pretty cool that they took into account the full scope of her. And as for the dialogue at the end she does make a comment before the initial decision....

The better question is, is it worth $30. Does it deliver anywhere near the same amount and quality of content phantom liberty for Cyberpunk for example which is the same price.

I appreciate you playing through the DLC Gopher. I didn't really like the base game, and was really bummed that the seemingly most interesting faction wasn't even in the game aside from their lovely constellation member. I figured they'd be shown off more in the DLC but by the time I finished the game I was too burnt out to care and don't expect I'll be buying it anytime soon. It saddens me that Bethesda is no longer the company I once loved, but it breaks my heart that they seem to show few to no signs of returning to what they once were.

Something you neglected to mention with "joining" House Va'ruun is that you can literally mock their religion to their face during countless conversations, and just "play along" with their beliefs, in order to do the quest itself, for those who have a problem with joining the "religion"...
@GophersVids

@@GophersVids I mean you can literally make fun of their religion within the in-game dialogue, where as the way you describe it, it makes it sound like you can only "head canon someone pretending to be a believer" as such as, unless I missed it, you don't mention being able to actively mock their beliefs... But the dialogue options do literally allow for the player to mock the Va'ruun beliefs in many conversations, without the player having to "head canon" that they're simply playing along for the sake of the quest...

Well I didn't do that this time, so I couldn't really comment on that in this video. It's good to know that you can and still finish all the content, but it still has the same problem of not being compatible with a lot of people's characters. Not everyone is going to want to play someone who joins a religion and then mercilessly mocks it. I mean, I could imagine making a character specifically for that, but that's kind of the problem. Most DLC for games like this allow you to just roll with any character you like.

I get what your saying but keep in mind past Bethesda fraction DLC's had at least one opposing fraction your character could side with. In the case of Nuka World there was always the option of wiping them out any time you wanted because your character wouldn't join a bunch of raiders. For a lot of people a few hand waving lines isn't a good enough reason for their character to be joining a group they wouldn't join to play the DLC.

I don’t think having to join house va’ruun is that big of a deal because of the dialog options after you do. You can still be skeptical of the religion or even degrade it (be a heretic within the faith).

I did not care for Starfield, but I'm on the fence about the DLC. in my case, though, I didn't get far into the main Starfield quest and haven't played it since early on, so a lot has probably changed. with mod support being a bigger thing now, it might be worth reinstalling the game and seeing if I can fix my complaints with the base game. I just have one question- have they fixed the bug where your ship interior takes off without the rest of the ship and the only way to unfuck that is to get rid of the ship? because that was the thing that made me finally quit the game originally

i hated starfield at launch and all the issues and like the hubris of bethesda refusing to have brightness or hdr settings or even city maps, but im enjoying it now because i got all the mods to fix all the broken garbage and tweak everything, and the rev 8 makes planets 100x more tolerable than running in a straight line for 1000 meters . im enjoying it and playing main story, not endlessly grinding procgen content but doing some space bounty missions is fun. a lot of the stuff is still poorly designed but its way more tolerable now

I'd be interested to see their sales figures for this, say, one month after release. To see, how many people would agree with me, that this is just not worth it for the money, just as Starfield wasn't really worth it for full price. Most of those, who are interested in it, but have an embarrassment of riches of games to play, can very comfortably wait until a complete edition of Starfield costs itself 30 dollars or less. There are games, that put us in a rush to play them: when they're very highly praised or are played by our friends or we're a fan of the franchise or developer or we're suddenly nostalgic for games from the past Starfield just isn't one of these (for me).

A DLC can only do so much to improve on the foundation of the base game. With a base game already as weak and flawed as Statfield, even if Shattered Space had been significantly better, (which it wasn't,) that would still only bring it up to "good."
