Well, to be fair. He didn't hit the glass hard at all. He was "striking" it like a six year old girl. In fact, i think a six year old girl could hit harder. Also, if the'd taken an actual hammer he'd have a much better chance, but that kind of hammer is build with a huge impact area, and of it's made of rubber to reduce impact. It's really only meant to bend and shape soft materials like copper and gold, without damaging them. So it's one of the worst thing you could choose to break anything

If someone is hell bent on breaking into your car, their first 5 or 6 attempts will not be with a rubber mallet for the purposes of a video. They'll grab something heavy and metal, break in with one swing, and forego the whole spark plug thing, so don't worry ;)

So you use a metal hammer to break the sparkplug, then throw the ceramic bits at the window... How about using the hammer to break the window directly? You can save time by going straight for the window, and money by not wrecking the spark plug. If you don't have a hammer, you should at least have a tire iron, or a jack handle, or a rock from the side of the road, or the bottom of a pocket knife held in a fist for those who EDC, you could even hold a small rock against the window and baton it with a stick, or use the finger tapping trick to shatter the glass... If it's an older care you can use the coat hanger trick, or the shoelace loop trick... There are just so many better ways of getting into a car than breaking a sparkplug with a metal hammer then tossing the sparkplug bits at the window. Maybe I'm missing something.
@IndyTheGreat
@IndyTheGreat 9 жыл бұрын
UberDoyle You are. He DID swing the hammer at the window. What if you're rescuing a child who was left in a car? Swinging a hammer too hard could risk you throwing it at them or sending glass shards at them at a high speed.
@nightcaste

Indy The Great they hit the window with a different hammer than they used on the spark plug. You can't break the porcelain off a spark plug with a rubber mallet.

Oh no! A child is stuck in the car! Better pop the hood and get those spark plugs and smash them up using this hammer I so happen to have, instead of lightly tapping on the glass with the claw to break it. Oh geeze I'm soo smart for knowing the fact that I can break glass with porcelain!

That's how smartphone screen protector makers mislead the public when they smash with hammers or drills and tell you "see the screen survives." But the same screen shatters when it hits uneven pavement or gravel side walk where point of impact by tiny gravel is more concentrated than a blunt hammer.

So if in an eXtreme emergency (as stated in the video) your handy rubber mallet fails, you should do the following: a) open the hood of he car b) get the tools needed to screw a spark plug out of the engine c) screw one out and shatter it with your hammer e) use the broken piece of porcelain to shatter the car window DON'T: d) dont use the steel hammer (that you of course have) to smash the car window, use the rubber one. Reserve the steel hammer for spark-plug smashing. e) when opening the car's hood, for which you need to get into the car itself to pull the handle, dont stop and realize that you actually made it into the car f) when preparing for this eXtreme emergency in advance (as I imagine the video suggests) pack the tools you need to screw the spark plug out + two hammers. Dont pack an emergency glass-breaker tool.

Actually, Google N-gram shows that usage of the word "hacker" was nonexistent before 1975 and has risen steadily with the rise of computing. "Hacks" or "to hack" in this context has always and should refer to methods of circumventing security measures in computing software. This is not a "hack".

If your mallet won't get you in to your car, simply enter the car and pop the hood to remove one spark plug. Then use a hammer that could have gone through the glass to wreck that spark plug open. Enter the vehicle. Either hotwire the car and drive away with one cylinder open and the hood on fire or simply take shelter in the vehicle that now is open to the world.
