@@synthWizkid Yes you should absolutely go there and while you're in the UK you really should also go to Wales. There are parts of both that have literally jaw dropping scenery that's going to make you feel like you're going to crash your car. And yes if you really want to have the best experience in that part of the UK I give the same advice that I give if they come here to Texas: You have to rent a car so you can explore what you want to, find hidden gems, meet more locals, and most importantly you make your schedule so you'll never feel pressured to leave a place you really want to explore. Yes you have traffic circles, the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car and you have to drive on the wrong side of the road, and in rural areas it's a challenge because of farm equipment, and sheep and cattle crossing the road. So you get out of the car and go talk to the farmer.

As a native born Texan I always love seeing the Alamo. But the iconic building in your vid is only a small portion of the original mission. The building behind you was the chapel. It was intended to build it three stories tall with bell towers but they only got two stories built. It and a convent stands in what was the south end of the inner courtyard, but was only a small part of the total mission enclosure. There were over thirty adobe buildings within the complex in addition to the chapel. Most of it was inclosed in a two foot thick wall about two and a half meters high. The north-south walls were 150 meters long and the east-west walls that completed the inner court were 49 meters long. In total, the rectangular mission covered over three acres with the building which still stands located in the southeast corner. Most of the mission no longer remains, obviously. But that 13 day long battle didn't take place in that one small building.

Tamales are just meat or something else in cornmeal steamed in corn husks. It’s very labor intensive to do and really is only busted out during major holidays like thanksgiving or Christmas. You literally have to get the cornmeal ready by making a dough which needs to sit overnight, corn husks that soak in water for three days with a certain chemical to make them soft enough to use, then meat or whatever filling it is. You need to have a lot of people to make these assembly line style with one person doing one job like spreading cornmeal or wrapping it together. It’s a long process to do but cooking isn’t that simple either as you have to constantly watch the steam as too little it turns to dust while too much they turn to mush, people constantly adjust heat to get the best results. Takes several days to pull off.

The process is also why it's made in large batches. Had to do some research in my high school years on food from Mexico, and you might be surprised by the fact that Tamales have been around for centuries, as Shaun said in the video, they're a Mesoamerican food. The food itself was a travel food, used for armies or hunting parties to take with them as a quick meal while on the move.

it’s just a different type of meat to put in a taco. And is awesome when the fish is cooked correctlu or seasoned correctly. But yah a fish taco can go bad easily also. And also furthermore, fish tacos are just another type of cuisine originating in Mexico where all our other favorite Mex and TexMex cuisines came from. Mexicans that live along the Pacific coast or Gulf coast naturally put the fish meats that they had access to into their tortillas. So it’s easy to understand, why, how, when, et cetera, and it is totally ok if you never ever will like them because of your personal preferences. But CAN and SHOULD understand the concept of fish tacos while simultaneously preferring to not ever eat them according to your rightful personal preferences. Berryhill’s fish tacos in Houston! A local favorite!

you can have all sorts of Mexican and TexMex cuisines and cut out the flour and corn based ingredients. Like beans! Beans beans they’re good for your heart!

You have an ocean coastline, it's crazy to me that you don't understand fish tacos. Done right they are some of the best tacos! Also check out Siete brand tortillas, they are grain free, so if you know your way around the kitchen you can still have texmex. :) Their tortilla chips are pretty good too.

The closer you are to the sea the greater the chances are that fish will end up on your plate in very imaginative ways. The chances increase to a certainty if you have a large number of Catholics in the area.

Fish tacos are amazing when done well, though I usually only eat them when I go to Port Aransas or South Padre.

I’ve lived in Texas and eaten Texmex for most of my 61 years…. I don’t know what you ate, but tamales don’t come on a stick and fish tacos aren’t what we ordinarily eat. Come to Houston and I’ll take you to eat real and really great Texmex!! 👍

Tamales don't come on a stick. But fish tacos are common in every seaside town in Mexico. That's not unusual.

That's a very bougie presentation of a tamale, but I'm sure it was tasty. As for me, whenever I try out a new Tex-Mex restaurant in my city, I always have to try their fajitas....usually beef or chicken or a mix of both. It's like the signature DIY Tex-Mex dish....they bring the sizzling meat and other fixings and warm tortillas and you assemble them to your fancy....and they're amazing. Wash it all down with a cold Negra Modelo or a cold bottle of Corona with a lime slice in it....heavenly.

Sidebar/Fun Fact, General Sam Houston had told the Alamo defenders to get the hell out of there and retreat. They ignored him. But "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!" became Texian rallying cries.

When we travel we follow the locals advice on where to eat. Sometimes we have a shack on the water, a boarding house, a hole in the wall that only makes 1 or 2 items that are NOT substituted with a line before they open. Then there’s the grand ole dame that surprises everyone. I love food!

I'm glad you're enjoying your tour of the unquestionably great state of Texas. One observation: I've lived here for all of my life (so far), but I don't recall seeing a tamale on a stick. Interesting. In any event I'm glad you're both enjoying the Tex-Mex cuisine and I hope you take nothing but happy memories back home to beautiful Scotland. Have a great visit! Cheers from Dallas.

Ha! Yes, we spell whiskey differently because we use a different grain for mash. Husband and I have some Scottish roots and he is a big fan of Scotch Whisky. We went to Scotland on honeymoon and did a little whisky touring along A95 just north/east of Cairngorms. Seven days and I didn't want to go back home because it was SOOO beautiful and I didn't feel like I had seen nearly enough. I'm dying to return someday!

I'm glad your stay in Texas had been so good. If you ever find yourself back in North Texas you need to find a restaurant called El Fenix. They are the ones that began the whole Tex Mex revolution.
