I just want to personally thank you for sharing with Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 how Scottish Americans have preserved the many ways of our heritage. I was met with lots of hostility in TikTok for saying my family came here from Scotland. I was told there is no way to know that because there are no records- I do not think a lot of people in Scotland understand that america kept very good records of all people who came here and where they were originally from. I live in North Carolina and I’m very proud to have hailed from Scotland so long ago. 💜

Family came over in 1899 after hitting three ports of call between Ireland, Scotland and England. My grandfather's parents passed soon after arriving, and the 4 kids (Grandpa Henry born on the boat) were split up in the orphanage system at the time. Dad discovered surviving family in the 1950's. We have records of arrival, and that's about it. Everything prior to arrival is conjecture.

TikTok is garbage anyway. A DNA test proved my Scottish heritage. My family also kept meticulous records of births deaths and marriages. I'm proud of it and I'm glad you are too 🙂

I wonder what they could mean by "no records"? There are lots of records to research. I found plenty of information on my family from where they came from originaly in Scotland to where and when they settled in America. And where many of them are in present day. It wasn't easy, but it's there.
@lairdcummings9092

Exactly so. We can trace our family all the back to a retainer of the Red Comyn (which ancestor was present at Greyfriars). You can find many, many other families whom have kept similarly detailed records.

@@johnmagill9496 I think people react that way because THEY are/were to lazy to do the work of finding all the familial connections btwn Scotland and America… but then most people want the info “spoon fed” to them.

Shaun!!!!! I'm new here! I'm from a small Scottish Irish town in New Jersey, just outside NYC called Kearny. I live in South Jersey now just outside of Philadelphia. I was starting my research for my trip to Glascow ( my grandmother is from there) and Edinburgh (my grandfather is from there) and found you, just outside of Philly!! Funny enough, I have been researching kilts for my kids because the kilt store in my hometown has since closed! You hit two birds with one stone. I'm going to bing watch your channel today! This reminds me of KILT SHOP I visited in Edinburgh. I was amazed by all the pleats that were put into a kilt. I wish I could remember the name of the shop. Secondly nI have been working on my genealogy. Yes there is Scotch ancestry. When we were in Scotland a ew years ago we went to dunnottar Castle. I did not know that my 25x gg grandfather was born there. He was a Keith, who had ties with Scottish and English royalty.

It would be either Geoffrey Tailor or Hector Russell. Spent a few pounds at Hector Russell once, bought a green Prince Charlie jacket & waistcoat, a beautiful silver-fitted Sgain Dubh, and ordered a dress sporran. I already had a kilt, a hand-me-down form my father. A fully-pleated kilt has nearly 8 yards of material.

I like the Norse/Viking designs but I wouldn’t pick it unless I took a DNA test (although the Viking raided/settled a lot in the British Isles and Keltic fringe/coastal areas) and found out that I had Scandinavian DNA. My mother’s father was born and raised in Scotland (my mom was born in England as was her mother) and I also have Irish ancestry.

My grandparents came to the US from Scotland (Aberdeen and Inverness) and we grew up with this idea that being Scottish was really cool. Not that my grandparents actually told us that, but they were definitely Scottish and definitely cool to me. Thanks to the Scottish history and the Clan system, as you learn about your personal ancestry, there is a lot to learn about the history of the clan your family may have been associated with hundreds of years ago. This also can give you a feeling of community with other people who have traced their ancestry back to the same clans. It's fun to learn about and gives you a sense of pride.

A lot of Americans like to claim ancestry based upon surname. My name is from the Glasgow region, but the guy that brought it to the colonies arrived in the 1710s. His descendants likely married Welsh, English, German, Irish, and other groups in the intervening centuries. On the one hand I want to have a connection to the past, but on the other I feel like it's so diluted over the years that there's no past to be claimed. I do absolutely love Scotland, though. I've been all over the UK from Plymouth to Edinburgh, and I've never felt more at home there than in Edinburgh.

I personally knew my great grandmother who immigrated from Scotland as a toddler in 1881. My Mom stayed with her and her mother summers and would tell us stories that her great grandma told her about Scotland and their travel to the US. Heck, my grandma even stuffed her turkeys with haggis, so it’s always been a part of our family life. Having done homework on the Scots in my ancestry, I found that the two clans (opposite sides of the family) were ancient enemies. One clan got kicked out of Scotland for nighttime cattle rustling. The name of their newsletter? The Lantern. 😂

Aalso, the blue in the American flag still comes from the blue in the English Union Jack flag, which is actually the blue from the Scottish flag, but Kennedy still more beloved than Buchanan, etc.
