I wish I would know half of the things Joe forgets in a day. This man is an endless bag of machining resources. He has so many clever tricks up his sleeve, including some unconventional setups, that each video is truly a lesson...the shaping using the lathe leaved me speechless. Kudos for Joe

Lets be honest, many (most?) of us are milling to scribe lines, and hand filing to fit. Especially on small parts. Joe's museum quality models are both inspirational, and humbling.

for the larger version, I could see it made from a flat bar, a tube and a handle, but for the model... to get it to look good at scale, I can see why they make it as mostly one piece. It might even be worth adding a bin next to the machine with the scrap pieces as an accessory or with alternate handles as spares... maybe with a little bit of chain attached so they don't get misplace... lol.

Hi Joe, Can you describe your square hole broaching tool in a little more detail? Was the end hollow ground and if so what did you use to produce this feature? Also, what relief angle did you have behind the cutting edges? If one has a SG then I can see how it could be made easily in HSS or even in carbide from a tool blank.

How hot can you get brass before you start getting zinc vapors? I'm a bit nervous about heating it over the 600°-700°F used for soft soldering. Some Googling indicates that zinc melts at 787°F.

Honestly, I probably would have tried to make a shim so part #18 would better fit part #28; maybe some thin plastic or paper. Some test fittings, filing, & trial and error, until it just fits, then superglue the shim inside part #18. Cut off any excess, and voila! A crank handle that fits. 😊
