Super common on the east coast, not as common in other parts. As mentioned by Алекс Алекс, the availability is generally correlated with the presence of people from cultures who make it.

Turtle von Nurtle+ True, and to respond to something else stated by the second poster, yes all sorts of Latin American cuisine is common in parts of the US, but it's not limited to that. I don't live in a big city, but within a few miles of me, I can find restaurants that serve Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Peruvian, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Greek, Portuguese, Polish, and so on. Again, depending on where you are, it's not hard to find diverse type of foods in the US.

The shawarma shop counter person misinformed you. Döner and shawarma (çevirme) are pretty much the same thing and they can both be made with beef, lamb or chicken and in some rare cases fish. Greeks make it with pork and they call it gyro(s). Shawarma is how Arabs pronounce the Turkish word "çevirme" (chevirme) which in time evolved into shawarma. Döner and shawarma both mean rotisserie (turning) in Turkish. There's also another variety which you never see outside of Turkey and it's called called çağ kebabi. By the way, kebap or kabab in Arabic means roasted meat and although shish kebap or shishlik is the most famous one, there are countless varieties of kebaps in different regions. Personally I'm not a huge fan of doner/shawarma because it's fast food, the thin slices of meat is often over cooked and you get a small portion of meat. Turkey is such a regional place that for good doner you need to travel outside of Istanbul and visit the city of Bursa and try their "Iskender doner" with yogurt and tomato sauce.

Shawarma is the Arabic word for Turkish Doner Kebab. And it is used for chicken or beef. I wonder how in Russia you got the Arabic word instead of the Turkish, thu so many Russians speak Turkish. Also the bread is called Saj, you find it in the middle east and Turkey as well.
@farlajones82315 жыл бұрын
shawarmas are not owned by ethnic russians - those are owned by turkic migrants from Central Asian ex-soviet stans and from the Caucases region - you can exactly see that looking at the guy who served food for Sergey and this Texan guy in that shawarma - why do those shawarma owners call it shawarma is like the question in this song:kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZTdlmp7fNSlhc0

Shawarma! I think I could eat it every day. That looked delicious. Are there fancier shawarma restaurants in St. Petersburg? If I were there long term and had to conserve my food budget, I would think of shawarma as "inexpensive" rather than cheap. Cheap has a connotation of poorly made and although this usually doesn't apply to food :) it would make me feel good that I was eating fairly healthily and inexpensively. Bon appetit!
