It's heaven. Plays the guitar like a piano, and a piano like a guitar.

You are very very right though, your point is very valid. In a way, watching everyone ELSE get recongition whilst he laboured away on different club + Euro circuits, really wasn't the happiest thing that could ahve happened to Shawn Lane. Still, I am prety sure he didn't want to be mega famous, but equally, iI am fairly certain that getting passed over whilst people kind of ripped his tone/ideas off, didn't do much for his happiness either.

So I am not sure WHY Varney did nothing. Shawn got a Spotlight colum about 5 years after the demos but that's it AFAIK! And my God, yes, what a thing that would have been to see SL with an Orchestra. The man had a touch and talent no one alive has. By the way, those demos are on a user called SpoonyLeg's youtube page I think. Crazy playing obviously!!

Playing this Weather Report classic just proves that he is in a different class than the "rock" guys people compare him to.

Lane did send a demo to Varney...you can hear it on youtube...2 of em in fact! Varney did get him to play of Centrifugal Funk though... I also like his ballads and instruments.

Mke's brother Mark Varney released Shawn's efforts. Mark had the fusion based Legato Records and released the MVP records first with Holdsworth and Gambale second with Lane/Garsed/Gambale. Mike did think Shawn was impressive but his musical approach was more of a straight ahead rock type label for the Shrapnel stuff.
