It's actually really cool to have the guitar so upfront here because you can really hear all the nuances of Shawn's articulation, his unreal intonation on each note, the slight perfect bending, the tone...Shawn cannot be matched

The tone...vibrato , phrasing...he had it all. RIP Shawn.

IMO probably the most advanced electric guitar player of the twenty first century. As an artist, he wasn't limited to just the overall basic simplicity that rock music espouses. If it was in scale form Shawn could incorporate it into his music. As a musicians musician, he was continuing to grow by expanding his knowledge in music. He was really into Eastern music when he died. The most difficult musical system in the world. Too many guitar players tend to stay fixed in one form of music, but Shawn threw everything out there, including the kitchen sink.

Couldn't agree more! Although it's hard to determine who is the greatest electric player of all time, as there are so many factors you have to consider. But I'd say Shawn was the most accomplished fusion/rock player/composer of the twenty first century (I mean, name any electric player that composed beautiful and intricate tunes on their own (not only guitar, but MIDI too) as well as being an out of this world player). Shawn put so much into his music it's hard not to be inspired by his work. Shawn had a level of understanding about music I think no one else has really seen before

I need more of this. More audio where the guitar is more up front than the rest. Especially the warm up part. We need an album of all the greats (holdsworth, jeff beck, SVR, Guthrie, pat metheney, you name it) each track just a ten minute warm up, listening to each guy mess around with ideas. Would be wonderful.

This is great! ..and at a time where I think Shawn was at his best. This version of "Illusions" is beyond words to describe..

This version of get you back is the highlight and funk #49 was great as well, but let’s not forget song for Diane, you know what the whole show was the highlight 😂 this guy had it all

The warm up is great: you can really hear his tone and little articulations, all the finger movements vibrato and note-to-note transitions. Having the guitar too loud isn't a bad thing in this case - for those of us studying him you can really hear him.

Dang!! I'll tell you this performance of illusions is right up there with the performance at Murphy's in 94. Side note. Does anyone now if there is a video for the "Hell is other People" performance at Some Place Else in India?
@wesleylakemusic2 жыл бұрын
Hi, not really sure on that one. So many gigs were taped but I think only a handful were filmed. I'm actually looking for a video myself: the show filmed on top of Tripura House February 23 2003(?). I'd appreciate it if anyone has it

Years ago I recall seeing a black and white video of him in India playing some music I've never heard on any record or bootleg, it was a long vehicle for improvisation and I sure wish I could see that again - I could have sworn this was early youtube or a competing site - I tried recording audio from the computer and it wasn't completely successful. It was in a small club with the Vinayakrams and Jonas I believe. In a recent interview with Jonas Hellborg he stated that he had more unreleased Hellborg/Lane/Sipe material that didn't ever get released so he talked about releasing that at some point. I sure would love to hear that!

I come to Shawn's videos to enjoy... always end up confused. How could a human being play like this? No, really. HOW?
@wesleylakemusic Жыл бұрын
Yeah I know right??? Shawn was also diagnosed with a form of arthritis yet he can do all this crazy shit. It's insane
@YesYouAreAbsolutelyCorrect Жыл бұрын
@wesleylakemusic absolutely ridiculous. His musicality is out of this world, but his technique is just 🤯
@wesleylakemusic Жыл бұрын
@@YesYouAreAbsolutelyCorrect Shawn's technique is actually crazy. But his knowledge, versatility, musical prowess and influence is crazier to me. Shawn learned and analysed so many artists from Holdsworth, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Art Atatum, Konlon Nancarrow, Weather Report, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (a big one), John Mclaughlin, Paco De Lucia, other shred guys like Paul Gilbert (I assume). Shawn's knowledge and intelligence was also nuts. He could play piano as good as guitar
