That's what I loved about Shawn Michaels' character in 1997. He was hated and arenas booed the hell out of him, and he would just dance to his hilariously arrogant theme song right through the boos without a care in the world. He was not afraid to be himself out there no matter what anyone thought of him.

Bret and Shawn hated each other but they were professional enough to work great together and did promos against each other that came off as real hate. Which it was.
@Longlostpuss
@Longlostpuss 2 ай бұрын
They didn't hate each other at all, they were actually good friends before it turned sour over Sunny and there was a lack of communication and misunderstanding which led to a distrust. Even when you watch the aftermath of Montreal, Bret isn't aggressive with Shawn backstage, he asks him genuinely and sincerely if had anything to do with it, rather than straight up assuming he did and going to lay him out. Behind every friendship breakup is a toxic female, guaranteed.

I'll say Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat, my personal favorite. I even think Undertaker vs. Shawn Michael's series is better. The problem with Bret vs. HBK after WM 12, we didn't see it when they were at their peaks in 1997. They never really actually had a at their peaks match.

I think this sort of thing is why Bret was able to eventually forgive Shawn, or at least move on. It's clear Shawn is pretty uncomfortable talking about that situation, and all of this as a whole. He is fumbling with his words a lot, more than he usually does, and I expect because it's a situation that still is a touch sore, even if it has healed a lot. I think Bret seeing Shawn talk about how he felt the consequences of his choice would help Bret move on a lot. Even if Shawn never regretted doing what he did exactly, Shawn felt consequences and had to live with what he did. Bret probably thought at the time that Shawn did what he wanted and never felt any sort of consequences or baggage from it, and now knowing the pain Shawn was going through and how bittersweet those times after were, really helped Bret overcome some of his bitterness. Toward Shawn at least.

Absolutely not. Neither Shawn or Taker were the main draws for WWF in '97. Austin and the Rock alone would've kept WWF strong enough that once Russo and the clowns over in WCW made their mistakes, nothing would've been different. I'm 40 years old. I lost touch with wrestling probably for 15 years now but I absolutely love watching these shoots. Shawn is the best wrestler I think ever. I'm just basing this on his matches. He's got at least 20 five star matches. His 1991 Royal Rumble match vs the Orient Express is one of the best tag team matches ever. They nailed everything. His matches with Bret we're all great, his ladder match vs Razor was incredible, his hell in the cell vs Taker in my opinion is the best wrestling match I ever saw (I know it's objective) the story they told you cant replicate. His Kurt Angle match at WrestleMania was incredible. His match with Jericho also amazing and his WM25 match is considered by alot as the greatest match ever. He's bad matches with Mankind that are absolutely amazing. His matches with Nash and Sid were always great. He's had matches with Owen that are incredible and to someone my age, the superkick to Marty janetty on the barbershop was as good of TV that exists for wrestling. It's him or Bret for me. I know they weren't over as Hogan, Austin, Rock but just their matches. Top notch mate.

The belt is a prop that WWF owned, and Brett Hart ascribed some asinine value to. When I quit my job, they aren't going to have to fight me for the laptop they gave me. WWF owned that belt. Brett was going to greener pastures. WCW was happy to let Brett play with their fake belts for a while. As a business, the WWF didn't need their prop being desecrated on a competition's live television show. That belt was not Brett's to keep. The fact that he got caught up in the fake value of that belt is of no concern to WWF. They took their toys back from the petulant child who didn't want to give them up as he was leaving. That's Brett's problem. Shawn deserved none of the heat he received. I would argue that it worked out for him in the long run, but he was the tool that got the job done, that's all.

It's a shame Shawn spent his prime wasted on alcohol and drugs. That stuff just brings the worst out of people. It should have been the best time of his career and I would have loved to see the 3-match program that was originally intended between Hart and HBK which got scrapped after Shawn lost his smile. Shawn actually screwed himself not wrestling Hart at WM13 because Steve Austin stepped in as THE guy going forward after the double-turn at WM13 and really never looked back.

Growing up as a Bret mark and hating Shawn to see him come to Christ while Bret is whining to this day like an entitled teenager about how unfair everything is, HBK became a man and Bret got emotionally stunted about the screw job. It's as bad as Bret crying about WCW not having anything for him when he got to do long programs with Macho Man, Sting, went over on prime Goldberg, elevated Booker T and Benoit. He's just a miserable person.

Shawn can't help Bret is a whiny bitter baby. Bret Fart didn't win those belts, the wwf owned that belt and when the boss says drop HIS title, u drop it, especially when u r going to wcw to make even more money. Bret has a hitman pool table, thousands of pictures of himself in gimmick all over his hitman styled home to this day, dudes unbelievable and a mark to the core. Bitter baby Bret even has the belts in zipper suitcases and presents them nowadays "I won this belt" lol. Out of touch. Once 1996 hit, Bret fart was yesterdays news. Promos were boring and whatever company he was with would lose the battle, no coincidence. Don't get me started on Brets family photo he had made with his ex wife and kids making them all wear the hitman gimmick for a family photo😂😂

@@nick56677 Except Bret never said he was gonna take the belt with him. That's that WWE programming making you think that crap. Bret would gladly have dropped the belt to anyone else. He was never going to leave with the belt. That's some BS Vince made up to justify doing what he did. There was plenty of time and plenty of options to get the belt off Bret before SS. What I'm saying is, it didn't need to happen like it did. And WWE has done a phenomenal job of brainwashing ppl over the years into believing that narrative. Bret wasn't the kind of guy that would take the belt and leave. He wasn't a douchebag like that.

Shawn botched a crescent kick to a jobber. Doink beat Bret on a house show. Luger had stiffed Brody in the cage, in the humidity of Florida. Tempers flared and THAT’S why Bruiser no sold, and THAT’S why Lawrence Luger ran away. Heenan was supposed to go over Warrior in an upset. A one shot deal, ala Genius/Hogan. The LOD vs The Powers was the classic. Bob Holly was a mark for his drop kick. And Bret was pissed with Hogan before SS93. Hulk promised the title shot, then nixed it at the last push. Yes sir. Yes indeed. Spivey/HHH where known to be stiff. They’d tag jobbers for real if they didn’t sell their offence properly. Vince ribbed Jim with the ‘WHO’ gimmick. Candido stiffed Horowitz when Barry used Chris’s finisher without calling it. Crush’s heel turn WAS best for business, looking back.

I mean when we talk about how bad a joke can go wrong with your bosses & long term repercussions of that is nothing short of life time of self-sabotage. Had it went other way around, people would be mocking him to this day while comparing it to something like Fingerpoke of Doom moment of WWE.

Excepting Vince McMahon in his own class my himself, Shawn is in the top 10 of biggest wrestling names still alive that you can have an interview with (Top 10 : Stone Cold, Undertaker, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Bret Hart, Bob Backlund and The Rock). Special mentions after that : Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, Kane, Edge, Kurt Angle, Mankind, Batista, Randy Orton, Ted Dibiase, Jake The Snake Roberts, Kevin Nash, Jeff Jarrett, Sid Justice, Chris Jericho, Jerry Lawler, Lex Luger, Jimmy Hart, Sergeant Slaughter and Ricky Steamboat are also big names still alives but a little bit lower level to me. After that ...finally ... we will have the other category of stars but less important : Paul Heyman, Eric Bischoff, Bruce Prichard, Big Show, Rick Martel, Demolition, Rougeau Brothers, Steiner Brothers, Marty Jannetty, Jim Duggan, RVD, Arn Anderson, Mike Rotunda, Michael Hayes, Sean Waltman, Bushwhacker Luke, Booker T +++

Hbk trying to play the victim here doesn't really work with me. He was never single or alone for a minute. Between sunny and everyone else he had plenty of company not to mention being part of the most influential click in wrestling history. Not to mention that he was Vince's boy and could do no wrong and had a ton of support. And given the fact that he was the lowest drawing champion of all time at that time It's wild to think what he had to do to get there. I'm sure between all the drugs and the fact that he was tied in with Pat Patterson and who knows what else he had to do to stay on top that we haven't found out yet we will learn in due time. But HBK doesn't deserve to be on anybody's Mount Rushmore. The people who have him there don't know a lot about the inside part of the business. He nearly destroyed everything and the ramifications of his mark on the business are still being felt today. AEW is basically a very HBK friendly place if you know what I mean.

I love HBK, the character, in all its forms. With that being said, Shawn always fed his ego FIRST. Bret on the other hand always put the business/wrestling first. Take that information how you wish. I love the Montreal Screw Job and all the historical events that stemmed from it. I just wish a technical master like Brett had never wrestled the low skilled strongman Goldberg. Brett should have ended his career in WWE.

The Montreal Screwjob is the most misunderstood thing in the last 30 years in pro wrestling. It was Bret’s fault, he got exactly what he deserved, and Vince had to do it. It never would have happened, and Bret could have lived in peace, if he hadn’t been such a mark for himself. Asking Vince to risk Bret leaving with the belt is simply not reasonable, and that is what Bret asked him to risk. He got what he got because of that childish decision on his part.

While Bret was there everything to everyone seemed very uptight, it sounds like there was a lot of backstage separation and the guys were always on their feet waiting for fights to happen. But when he left they seemed like more friends with less tension in the air. So, i would say it's probably better he left. Could you imagine him staying for "choppy choppy pee pee" and Mae young giving birth to a hand ?! i cannot see him saying in recent interviews "yeah, i had a great time back then with Val, Kaientai, & choppy choppy pee pee, Mae, and Mark henry's hand baby!"

In all areas. He was good during his Rocker days but he stepped it up in every area once he split from Marty. His in ring work, his mic skills, his character.
