I just cannot wrap my head around people not ever having hear of this artist or song. It's just not comprehensible. This song is iconic, this artist is a nearly god status in the world, he's knighted by the British Royal Crown. His catalog of hit songs is as long as winter! One of the greatest single most amazing songs ever recorded in the history of music. period. Thanks for doing this one - i love your reactions. For another wonderful song with this sound in it - "Someone Saved My Life Tonight". One of his most underrated songs - it's not played on the radio but is amazing lyrically.

I love that you were so mesmerized that you let it go all the way -- unlike some other reaction sites. Elton was with this sleazy lover for a long time. Lots of drugs, and was passed around like a "present to be opened" So goodbye to the life that was giving him the Blues. Away from the howling 'Dogs of Society" and into a refresh. His Biography is amazing, -- funny and honest about the tough times.

Elton composed the song while Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics. Yes, your interpretation of the meaning is correct. This album was released on October 5 1973. Just 20 days before I was born😃

I saw Elton live for the first time in 1975 and when he played this, he replace the "Vodka and Tonics" with "Tequilla Sunrise" to the applause of the audience. Of course none of us knew what he was going through at the time with immense fame. Struggling with his sexuality, drugs, alcohol etc... Of course the lyrics were by Bernie, but they always seemed to be in synch.

What a beautiful reaction, from both of you! And to answer your question at the end... Your reaction to "I'm not a present for your friends to open" said it all :) It's basically a song about a male prostitute, yep. Some songs sound so beautiful sometimes you miss how good the lyrics are. This is Elton's masterpiece album. I'm sure you've listened to Funeral for a Friend already... :)

The song means he is leaving the big city, glitz, and glamour for the country his home roots. I left my home at the age of fifteen, and returned back only for a short time but it was something I needed to do. People say you can never return home. Well you can it will be different but it's worth it. Going back again as soon as I can. Miss the orange groves, and swamp lands. The top isn't anything without knowing where you came from. I learned that 19 years later.

You asked abou the meaning... this is about a young man who doesnt have a penny, being picked up and then kept by a society woman. He is tired of being "kept" as her gigolo/ escort and realizes the city life is not so glamorous after all. He doesn't think much of his woman and her society friends or dogs as he refers to them. The yellow brick road of promise & fortune only led him to tidbits of the fantastic life he had hoped for when he followed it to the big city. Hope that helps!❤❤❤ It cant be entirely autobiographical because Elton was not a farm boy growing up! Loved your reactions.!

IMHO, the song is about the idea of starddom, money and success being measured as a Destination where happiness' and the fulfillment of all your dreams lie. He realizes that he found the "yellow brick road" and that his life. is not complete and fulfilled with the destination he was told was the pinnacle of success. So, he "finally realized his future lies beyonf the yellow brick road", and that a simpler life is where he wants to dwell.

Great album the whole album and some different vibe to a couple of the other song...yes it was its a rags to riches but its actually about bernie taupin Elton co writer and probley the writer of most of Elton hits of course Elton chips in lol But the song is basically about Bernie,he's a very private individual to where Elton is very much in the limelight and so Bernie wrote the lyrics about himself which was very rare the majority of the songs are about Elton , that whole album is great check out a song called sweet painted ladies and imagine a life on the docks from all perspective try Saturday nights all right for fighting try rocket man I mean the list goes on pretty much any song you pick from Elton I think you enjoy great reaction really like you guys Been fun watching you keep it real try to listen to the whole song gather your thoughts and then present what you want to say about the 🎵 song I tell everybody you have to listen to the whole song and you have to absorb everything about it because sometimes music lead you in one direction and by the time it's over with,your at another direction And I think you guys do a good job Keep spreading the music to the masses,really fun to see folks hear the music that I was raised on And sometime take for granted.love me R&B the chi lites the Cornelius brothers and sister rose Have fun folks God-bless God's favour always.
@roger1296
@roger1296 11 ай бұрын
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, Elton John wrote the music…in Bernie’s own words, this is the meaning to his lyrics: “There was a period when I was going through that whole ‘got to get back to my roots’ thing, which spawned a lot of like-minded songs in the early days, this being one of them,” Taupin says about the origins of “Goodbe Yellow Brick Road.” “I don’t believe I was ever turning my back on success or saying I didn’t want it. I just don’t believe I was ever that naïve. I think I was just hoping that maybe there was a happy medium way to exist successfully in a more tranquil setting. My only naiveté, I guess, was believing I could do it so early on. I had to travel a long road and visit the school of hard knocks before I could come even close to achieving that goal.” In Taupin’s rendering, the Yellow Brick Road is a path to artifice and deceit, a far cry from the owls and toads and ploughs on the farm from whence the narrator came. He purposely overplays the bumpkin act as a way of zinging a controlling romantic partner who wanted to prop him up in her penthouse “where the dogs of society howl.”

The word “plow” is spelled “plough”? He is “going back to my plow” - to correct the lyrics. Great song! I agree on the song meaning, he is in a relationship with a wealthy woman and doesn’t want to be her plaything. He’s going back to the country or rural life.
