"Stay" is a doo-wop song written by Maurice Williams and first recorded in 1960 by Williams with his group the Zodiacs. This was their biggest hit. The song was written by Williams in 1953 when he was 15 years old. He had been trying to convince his date not to go home at 10 o'clock as she was supposed to. So many other artists have recorded this song & had hits with it including The Hollies, The Four Seasons & Jackson Browne.

I'm, like, 'Stay'? Do I know this one? Then, oh heck, I'm hurtled back to when I danced to this and that whole time of music. It's been there somewhere in my brain all this time, and just needed to get some airplay via dear Shawn and Mel to trigger the past. And, yeah, I might well get completely daffy, but I reckon I'll still be there doing the groove. Thank you, Joanne.

Thank you for spotlighting these years and these songs. Yes, I did subscribe- looking forward to more!

Others have mentioned it, but you should check out Jackson Browne's reworking of this song as the second half of "The Load Out/Stay." He often ended his concerts with that medley, which is a tribute to both his fans and his road crew, so he changed some of the lyrics to the "Stay" part of the song. He sings the chorus first in his normal voice, then a female vocalist named Rosemary Butler scorches it in the upper register, but the crowd is brought to its knees when lap-steel guitarist David Lindley takes a chorus in falsetto. There is a live video of this (Live at the BBC 1978) which is what you want to react to. You won't be disappointed.

Mr.Williams (as I had to call him when I was young) invited my Mom to go on the road with them. She and her best friend owned a motel at the beach that had a lounge with a stage for live entertainment. He saw her dancing to their songs in a corner of the lounge when they performed there one night. After the show, they talked for awhile and he made the offer; but, she declined because she had 3 little boys to raise by herself and a business to run. That's also where she met and became friends with Tina Turner, whom I call Miss Anna to this day. The falsetto in the song was sang by a member named Shane Gaston (Mr. Shane).

We had some “raunch” but it was more subtle. The Wallflower aka “dance with me Henry” by Miss Etta James, Hank Ballad’s original , “Roll with me Annie”, as well as Annie Had a Baby can’t work no more. “don’t cha just know it” by Huey piano smith, and 60 minute man were all songs that had the pearl clutchers up in arms. But, yes, a lot of this music was sweet n innocent by today’s standards. Plus it’s just a lot of fun. Maurice Williams also wrote or co-wrote the doo Wop classic Gloria, which is phenomenal. So many versions of that song. So glad to see your reactions and openness to all this great music. There is hope for the future! Today’s music is great, but these songs and artist were also great. Enjoy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

1960 'Stay' was released. The character in the song asked Mom and Dad because the male singers in those songs are teenagers too. Late 1950s and early 1960s Rock 'n' Roll was aimed mainly toward teens and early twenties audiences who danced up a storm. This song was popular with the chalypso. A hybrid dance the kids incorporated from Calypso and Cha Cha.
