Neil was up in Canada, near a Native American reservation and heard a story about how there would be dances on the reservation. For the men who couldn't get dates for the dances, they would go to the store to buy a bottle of cheap wine, labeled Crackling Rosé. The bottle would be the man's "date" for the night. A "store-bought woman" they called Cracklin' Rosie.

There is a great story behind this song that is about a bottle of wine. Last I seen you can still buy this wine. I read an interview by Neil Diamond he had performed a concert in a town that closed at dark. One of the employees of the concert place took him to the hotel where his room was. And left him. There was nothing to do and he was stranded. The town was dark, nothing to do. The only thing in the room was a basket with a bottle of cracklin Rose wine, crackers, cheese and fruit. He said "Well Rosie, I guess it just you and me tonight" he then sat down and wrote this song on a napkin in 25 minutes. Then released it and it instantly made him 35 million.

This from Google: The stories about how Diamond was inspired to write the song are apocryphal. "Crackling Rosé" is the name of an inexpensive sparkling wine once produced by Andres Wines of British Columbia, Canada, which was popular among the indigenous population. One story suggests that Diamond heard a story about a native Canadian tribe while doing an interview in Toronto, Canada-the tribe had more men than women, so the lonely men of the tribe would sit around the fire and drink their wine together-which inspired him to write the song.[2]
