On todays episode of REPLAY we have some pretty prominent places on the internet giving their take on what may be Kendrick Lamar's most controversial release in his entire career, DAMN. Unlike Good Kid, M.A.A.D City & TPAB Kendrick seems the least sure of himself on this record. Lets talk about what could be why.
Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. Album

Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE.
• Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE.
Kendrick Lamar - DNA.

Thanks for watching & have a great day.

I think... Good kid: his experiences Butterfly: his thoughts DAMN: his emotions I don't think its a dumbed down album. It just has more of an underlying emotional theme. The songs are about his inner most emotional experiences. He just packaged it in a mainstream way so it's easier to digest but each song is quite deep. Each song almost has a different emotion or feeling associated to it.

Sharma ; i agree mostly. His sound in this album is easier to listen to but i don't think calling it all mainstream is fair. alot of this album doesn't sound like any thing else.
@a.sharma5562
@a.sharma5562 5 жыл бұрын
Fernando Mendoza your right, the music itself wasn't mainstream but perhaps more "put together" in a digestible way. I also think people are underappreciating how amazingly well he did to make this digestible. It was done so well that people don't even see the complexity of this album.

Sharma ; the problem is his execution of the concept. GKMC & TPAB were incredible. Great concept. Great execution. Half the songs on DAMN are throwaways or for radio spins. Loyalty + Love + Yah + God were terrible songs. Humble was for radio spins. And I don’t see the deeper meaning behind songs. Multiple songs contradict the message of TPAB, including DNA. In TPAB, “for sale?” is an entire song dedicated to resistance of sinful temptations b/c hedonism leads to addiction & suffering. Yet DNA + Humble + Lust are all songs about falling to these exact same temptations. “for free?” & “u” are songs about him refusing to sell out to the music industry, even if it means money & fame. But half of this entire album is him selling out to the industry. Even the somewhat deeper songs are shallow compared to his first three albums. Lust + Fear + Element + Pride are subpar compared to his past work. Sadly I think Kendrick sold out.

This album is a very good project, but I feel a good chunk of people who don't like it, either thinks it's too mainstream or they just follow fantano's opinions. Regardless, I understand this may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it. Still the weakest of his discography, but that's not really saying much.
@skorpion3993
@skorpion3993 5 жыл бұрын
James Burgess Nah I wouldn’t say it was the weakest of his discography, it was a close 3rd to GKMC. And Shawn Cee is a better rap reviewer than Anthony Fantano (I said it) so whilst I always form my own opinions, I tend to go with Shawn more over him 99% of the time.

Thing is the worst there are only 2 songs on damn that are worse than the Best songs on 21 savage album and playboi cartis album. I Think it should be a 9,5/10. The only reason why People dont see it as a classic is because it came out after tpab which most People Think is the Best hiphop album of the decade

Kendrick is much more influential than j cole. Think about it ever since gkmc jcole has made a j cole light album version of it. 2014 forest hill drive was a good but inferior version of gkmc. Most people didn’t like 4yeo, I did, but again it’s still just an inferior version of tpab. And this year yet again j cole bit Kendrick’s style with KOD. Think of how popular jazz rap became after tpab. Kendrick totally change rap by make conscious rap mainstream again. I think you’re underrating Kendrick’s influence.

HUMBLE is overplayed. Agreed. It's not a bad song- I think it's a linear song... but it isn't bad. In my opinion, HUMBLE is Kendrick telling other rappers, who are successful, to be humble. That's why the last line of each verse is "b*tch, be humble". That's it. XXX is underplayed and it's a genius track. The police sirens are an amazing addition that really fleshed out the lyrics. Bono's addition felt short, but I'm glad he had a spot on a song that included the topic of gun control. There's a lot of treasure hidden for those who know the history behind that, and that made his appearance feel pretty special. Not to mention, this was basically three short songs combined on one track; each one loosely connected to another through the idea of struggle in a world that's unforgiving (which is our world). Idk, I felt pretty blessed.

The meaning is in the opening story: "Wickedness or Weakness? How does he die?" Then each song deals with either Wickedness or Weakness, until the end ehen the slbum rewinds to the beginning. This album is just more focused on an idea. The other two were dealing with greater, wide-ranging concepts.

I mean, Playboi Carti's beat choices aren't that bad. Well some are pretty good, his producer is pretty nice with it. Thats just me though, definition of more style than substance to me at least.

Progress 1 thats the thing. alot of these popular guys just have great producers. They ain't good rappers for the most part. Alot of great rappers can have bad or boring beats. Kendrick shows u can have both.

I agree with you, but during the Grammys, Kendrick said, "this is a satire by Kendrick Lamar." I don't know how that fits in, or what parts are a satire, but it's consistent with the, "this is a _______ By Kendrick Lamar" From Kendrick's other albums. So I assume it's referring to DAMN.

I agree with what you're saying, and I'm just wondering cause I can't remember you specifically saying this, but Fantano is big in saying it, your defense of Kendrick... is often peoples argument against Logic. They're both students of the game, and as you said, "Why can't he just like that music?" Logic and Kendrick both make the kind of music they enjoy listening to and while Kendrick is praised for it Logic is frowned upon for it. Just wanna know your thoughts regarding that.
