To gain more insight and in-depth analysis of this crucial aspect of the golf swing, I recommend you check out our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com
Nothing is more beautiful than a well-timed and coordinated action in any sports, especially golf! You can always tell when someone is fighting their swing or desperately trying to control their actions which always leads to sabotage of fluid motion. Even more, there is no way to get to a state of flow where time slows down and confidence soars when you are micromanaging a herd of body parts; you focus on one, the other falls apart, and you keep chasing your tail trying to put all those fires out! This video is another fantastic stepping stone from the hornet’s nest back to the calm meadow.
00:00. Introduction
01:20. Sledge Hammer Analogy/Drill
04:01. Medicine Ball analogy for the pause
04:40. Use of the arms with a Wedge with Muanshe

08:50. The pause in a baseball hitter's swing
10:15. Feeling the weight in short chip shots
12:37. 'Throwing the club drill' feel
12:50. 'Happy Gilmore' analogy for the pause

I’ve watched a lot of different golf instructors on KZbin, but you Sean are the Bob Ross of golf instruction. The only difference is Bob Ross makes painting look so easy but when you try it it’s not as easy as he makes it looks. However your instruction actually does make it so much easier to understand. I love you and your channel and recommend it to all my friends. Still trying to figure out how to get more distance on my shots as I have 58 years old and only average about 230 on my driver. I wish I had you as my instructor. Well I guess I kind of do. Thank you so much! Oh, my name is Joe. I will subscribe to you under my name as well.

This video of Shawn is right on. I am a 5-hdcp and this is one of the top two things I suffered a lot in my game. If I pause in my back swing, then the ball goes further and more accurate. Often, I have to count one-two pause in my head, then three down!

For how many years have I been killing my swing with this obsession of hitting the golf ball. I have spent the last coupke of weeks trying to get this out of my swing. Last weekend shot 80, compared to 94 the week before. I still "run home to mama" but thats because i have played the wrong way for 30 years. Thanks Shawn and co. Keep the vids coming mate.

This video has been absolutely transformational for the short game. Pausing has always been an issue, particularly with finesse shots (less than full swing). The "swing key" of pausing with a sledge hammer (even when using a wedge) allows the club to do the work, rather than trying to drag the club through. One of the best golf instruction videos on the net for this problem

Shawn, I used the Orange Whip today with feet together. It serves to supply weight similar to the sledgehammer with the added ability to throw. It gave me a great sense of timing. I was immediately able to implement the heave and throw into my swing. I increased my drives and woods by 20 to 30 yards. The iron shots increased both in distance and height and landed like a butterfly with sore feet. I will upload a video tomorrow morning when I am at the range.

All of your recent videos have been tying the pieces together. Closing the face at address, allowing the wrists to hinge naturally, and now "wait for the weight"!! I have been working hard at it and it is showing results. One thing I also realized was that in the "wait" at the top I was relaxing my left hand grip which was causing some issues (more related to the closed face I think). I have had to consciously work on it, which isn't ideal, but I now am getting how to keep a firm grip without manipulating my swing. Thanks for all the great insight Shawn, Sav, and Mu!!

This tip is golden. Straighter and longer. It takes a second for the club and body to load and the momentum to shift. That pause while the momentum shifts from back to down is the secret to distance and timing. Let gravity and momentum do the work. If you don’t do this chances are you are early, losing power and pulling shots.

Another great video! Sad to think I had never heard of you until last week. I won my club championship because of you... the day before the start of championship I was hitting the ball inconsistently and had 4 different swing thoughts. I then saw your ‘throwing clubs’ into the net video. It was very instinctive to me as a former baseball player used to throwing things. My only swing thought for two days was heaving the club back and ‘throwing’ the club down range. I was two under thru 16 holes and carded a 74 after a mini-meltdown on 18 ....and hit some of the best shots I have ever hit to include a 225 yard 4 iron to 5 feet for birdie! Yesterday you changed my game further when I saw how to get weight back to the front foot ‘from behind.’ (Toss Fall Fall I believe it was called...). The lag I picked up from getting on my front foot from behind was a true game changer.... killing the ball. Thanks- hope to get an in person lesson from you someday soon.

Shawn, I have seen most of your videos. You heave the club in a very graceful manner. Neither of your students are able to demonstrate that. I am trying it for a year or two and not able to copy it. Not sure what it is but I am missing that smooth swing. It may be the swing speed or stance width. Though you give him the step-by-step process, when he swings, it appears that he follows normal swing does not follow "heave-influenced" swing. I think, It is unique and just for you.

Not at all! Everyone has their own timing as to the engagement of their kinetic chain; Rahm is faster, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson are slower; Sam Snead Vs Ben Hogan. The key here is to feel like you can effortlessly throw the club in the direction you want ro start the ball; so see all our “throwing the club shawn clement” videos and see what comes naturally to you!

Bio mechanics that occur naturally, Innate Physics, Sledge Hammers, Carrot peelers, Medicine balls and Happy Gilmore! All simply explained and shining a very bright light on how to play better golf. Not a word about launch monitors that spew out data that is useless to the AVERAGE golfer. In my opinion, the tech is important for aspiring pros and for those really low handicappers, but useless and confusing for the majority of golfers. Shawn, you're the best in the business. Great video. I was experimenting on the range this week and discovered that a pause at the top made all the difference. It allowed me to synchronise the downswing. I would add that the pause is really only in the hands at the top - the lower half does continue to move and then leads the club through the downswing. Many thanks 😊

Good explanation for "ball bound" or "ball freeze". If you focus too much on the ball, the brain set the body to provide fine manipulation and the body freezes. So focus more on doing a smooth effortless swing and the ball was caught along its path. What works for me is doing few practice smooth swings and then keep the same thoughts/feel when I hit the ball. I even tried closing my eyes so I don't focus on the ball or just seeing the impact path/zone, "ignoring" the ball.

How much time does the ball compress (1/100 sec ?) and is it 1 feet or less in front of the tee before the release ? Thank you for letting me know! See all our “alignment shawn clement” videos as they talk about how our human eyes are terrible with side vision and how all the critical instruments and gauges for pilots are 30 degrees under your nose. This has a direct correlation to why golfers struggle with alignment! The intermediate point is essential to proper alignment AND the delivery of your golf shots. on our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com (only $9.95 per month) you want to see “alignment reload” and then “blur of club” and then all the “arc blur” videos to really help you understand how that intermediate point is used to deliver your golf shots. Great Video Shawn! Another Eureka moment , when Savvy hit first 2 shots little heavy, you mentioned to peal like carrot or assume that you are taking divot to green(Throwing club concept again)! I hit a lot of fat shots. When I stand over 40-100 yards pitch shot, my brain says watch that ball clearly and do not hit fat! Anddddd here comes another BIGGG FAT one, this time I take almost a foot and 2 inch thick divot! This and other videos changed how my thought process should be! You might have a PhD in Physics and Psychology to understand the issue behind these golf swing issues!

Hi Achanta! actually, you are probably like many players who need to hover their club off the ground at grass level at address; AND USE THE FULL PREDICTION PROCESS. On our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com you will see these important titles: -blur of club -arc blur (use the search box and watch all the ones that come up) -predict contact -the goldie locks series You will do these and then make sure that at address, you are letting the arms and club hang from the SHOULDER SOCKETS at just below the equator of the ball and then predict you will just graze the grass if you throw the club in the direction you want to start the ball. ENJOY!!

I have a fairly long question for you..bare with me 🥺..... Should all your irons be swung @ the same pace/tempo, and let the club do the work for the distance? If so! Why is it that, it is good to some people that they hit their 7 iron 200 yrds or what have you. I think I get confused with that, like what's the reason of having a 5 iron that supposed to hit far? If you are trying to make your 7 iron hit it that far.... Thanks for taking time out to read.

Shawn, Love how you teach, however I am stiff as a board and getting on a bit at 47. I struggle to pivot on the front knee so really struggle to throw the clublike this. Absolutely love your 2 happy helpers but MU WTF with those socks in Canada, that can get you beat up :)

😝😂; and yes, open up the backswing and let the lead heel come off the ground and the lead knee rotate behind the ball in the backswing; all you need to do after that is throw into the direction you want to start the ball and the timing of planting and clearing will happen for you easily!

Shawn, great video. So, the arm unit requires to initial muscular thrust downward, but instead, feel that quiet pause and let gravity start the arms downward? Then once at the critical point exert muscular power to slash through the bamboo shoot extending well beyond the ball. Do I have this right? I've been working on creating that pause at the top but still feel that I thrust too forcefully from the top which then results in the quality of my strike being pure timing of the hands rather than the unified force of gravity and arms, hands and clubhead.
@golflessons
@golflessons 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Andy! No, you are thinking of the “how” right now and you want to have a “what” instead. So you are gathering the backswing like heaving an axe and the arms float and levitate to the top and as they get to the pause, it gives you time to think “throw the club in the direction you want to start the ball with ease” which will engage the kinetic chain properly with a nice shift and clear the body and deliver your release to the target.

Hi again Shawn I noticed at one point Sav got the club head somewhat stuck in the rough on the takeaway. I suffer from this too now that I’m using your setup tips (lower more knee flex). What do you recommend to avoid this? Get setup then slightly hover the club with a little wrist hinge? Thanks - Phil

THIS IS A GREAT QUESTION AND BOY OH BOY DO WE HAVE THE MOST IMPORTANT ANSWER FOR YOU!!!! Your anatomy is perfectly designed to perform this without EVER thinking about it. It is called the kinetic chain!! Please see kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIumqn-DbbZrrdk as a starter and understand that well over 70 percent of our 1000 videos are to show you how you get this for free!!!! However, i tried the same takeway with the woods but the result was less good than with the irons. is there a difference in the takeaway between a wood and an iron please ? Thanks

Hi Shawn - one of my tendencies is to get jerky at the start of the downswing, especially when I try a pause which causes a loss of acceleration at the bottom point. Seems like I get a smoother transition to the down swing with one consistent motion but I totally see the benefits of the pause. Any tips for this? I’m also a member of your premium site and the content is awesome - thank you
@golflessons

Hi Brian! Never try to pause; the pause happens when you are not fighting with the club to try and hit the ball hard! 😝 See the “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with savy” on premium; that will get your flow into your task!

Question.... how does feeling the weight of the arm club unit relate to grip pressure. It seems to.me that lighter grip pressure would allow one to feel this weight where the tighter grip would cause tension in the forearms/arms. What would you suggest on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being the tightest... ty SC!
@golflessons
@golflessons 5 ай бұрын
Do not lose sight of the dynamic nature of the swing; 5/10 secure grip and get ready to feel the weight of the arc-club unit release you into the direction of the flight plan. So much G-force in the swing; just like a baseball hitter ready for the pitch; when he commits to the pitch and heaves the bat away from himself as he steps into the motion, the kinetic chain grows tone through lead leg, through the core, through the shoulders, arms and grip and then through the club head. Such a beautiful action!

It seems to me there is no need to create a pause, but rather a pause occurs naturally without you thinking about it. That is the essence of the Golf WRX golf swing philosophy. An automatic golf swing created by your innate talents!

Exactly! All we need is a task that brings it all together without thinking; the grass whip, started over 80 years ago by Wild Bill Mehlhorn and validated by Harvey Penick, is a staple here; see “grass whip training shawn clement”

Thanks for the response! As a 70 year old, I finally figured it out on my own after I posed the question. I “googled” Wisdom in Golf and saw all the info. I’m retired and play golf once or twice a week and watch your videos on KZbin. I enjoy them and try to use the info when on the course. But old habits die hard - especially when you start getting tired on the back 9! LOL! What got me interested in maybe becoming a premium channel member was when you indicated on a KZbin video that you would show how to implement your swing with each of the clubs in the bag on the Premium Channel. So, I’m thinking about that. Incidentally, Shawn, one of my closest friends uses the same funny expression that you have used on videos after I launch a long drive - which is the best part of my game considering I’ll be 71 in a few weeks - i.e., “I saw snot flying off of that one!” Keep up the good work! Thanks. Jim Seeberger

Yep! Been teaching this for 25 years now!! When you walk, you stay level? When you pump a skate board off the back side of a roller to grab a turbo charged boost of speed, you stay level? When you skate? You have been had by the golf teaching industry’s “fear mongering” that the machine you have that works at 40 million bits of info per second is defective and that you need to micromanage it with a conscious mind that works at 40 bits per second. Time to come over here and learn how things really work!

Not sure how to ask this without making it public. Why is it that the swing I see you teaching is not the swing you use? I’ve been around golf about 60 years (no typo) and have had the opportunity to play with many golfers with low handicaps, teaching Pro’s, even watching golf on TV, and have never seen a swing that looks like yours. I mentioned you to a 2 hdcp at our club and he said “I don’t want a swing that looks like that.” You must look at your own swing once and awhile. Trying not to be critical as you do have quite a following.

So you don’t see Bubba or Kenny Perry or Jack or Bobby Jones in my swing at all? Full turn, knee behind, head back, fully gathered high hands and arms like a ball player or Justin Thomas…I have what works for me and allows me to enjoy great golf shots that rival any tour professional that has 115 MPH club speed with the Driver.
