Shawn, your explanation of how the ball slides up an open face is fascinating. It looks from what I can see that with the face open you are not taking an open stance. I recently had a lesson on short pitches around the green where I was somewhat short sided and wanted some spin and not a lot of roll. I was told to take an open stance and swing along the line of my feet, with an open face aimed at my intended landing spot. You seem to get the chip going where you want it to with an open face but not an open stance. As you showed Mu, a key element in this is to swing straight back along the target line, not around and behind. I will definitely work on the way you show. One other thing that came up in my lesson, which perhaps is gremlin number four to add to the three in my first comment, the pro noticed that even though I thought I was keeping the face open toward the target, I had an unconscious tendency to roll the toe over and a bit closed. The solution was to keep my left or lead wrist a bit cupped or flexed at the snuff box as you show in almost every video. So as I contacted the ball and continued to swing through my palm would be very slightly facing down, whereas if I had a straight or slightly flexed lead wrist, the back of my hand would be turned very slightly down. That would send the chip or short 10-15 yard pitch low and left. Tiny little things but they can make a huge difference.

Dead on again, Shawn!!! Love how you keep firm wrists, rock the arms, and ALLOW the body to turn in sync. Too many people get robotic, and stiff with their hips, and legs. This causes their chips to get choppy looking, and make for poor contact. Absolutely love how you describe "feels" to people. The greatest guitarists play with "feel", instead of robotic technique. It's how our brains perform at the highest level!!!

Very useful. Muffed short chips probably add more strokes to the mid handicapper’s score than errant drives. At least that’s my experience. One of the evil gremlins lurking to hurt your score is a right (trail) wrist that you pleaded with to remain calm and relaxed and bent back (in extension) but that suddenly as if possessed flicks at the ball, blading it so it runs over the green leaving you to repeat the shot. Next is the gremlin that, even if you have more weight on your left or lead leg, causes the club to chunk into the ground behind the ball, which hops like a toad and either stays in the rough so you can try again or barely makes it onto the green, leaving a long put that will take two and maybe three strokes to get in the hole. Instant double bogey. I always wonder if this might be due to dropping the right or trail shoulder more than I realize, thus putting the bottom of the swing arc further back. One other gremlin is forgetting that hitting a short high pitch from the semi rough near the green takes more swing energy (momentum) than the same shot you practiced on the driving range mat. Yet we often do just the opposite, chicken out and give it less energy. To make it worse, we forget to check whether the ball is sitting up in the semi rough or down. This is critical because wedges are built with most mass low down so full energy is delivered when the strike is on the second and third grooves from the bottom. When the strike is in the middle of the face or a groove or two higher, you lose a lot of the energy and the shot will not go as far. So if the ball sits up, just a half inch or so, the bottom of your swing will be under the ball, the strike will be higher up on the face, and your pitch will come out woefully short even though you thought you had made enough of a backswing based on your practices at the driving range off the mat. Again, instead of the ball ending up in one putt range, you now face two or even three putts. If you doubt this, look at the grass stain on your wedge face next time you can’t believe your pitch was short.

Just open the face! The leading edge will come off the ground and the trailing edge will keep the sole from digging like a stone skipping on water! Then make sure you are using pure momentum to execute the chip; just the weight of the arms and club like a sledge hammer. GET ONE AND PRACTICE SWINGING BACK AND FORTH WITH IT; you can’t shove or place a sledge, you simply get out of it’s way and let it do the work.

Great video gang! It makes sense. Overall; however, I'm confused and don't know what method to focus on. According to one of the all-time best chippers, Paul Runyon, that shot would be played like a put -- prolly with an upright 6 iron off the toe, middle of the stance to eliminate backspin with a straight back, straight forward swing. Dave Peltz suggests a similar action with the ball more so in the middle of the stance. Watson and Crenshaw were great pitchers and chippers too. I guess a variation that feels comfortable and yields consistent results should be the winner. I really dig the "intermediate" trick! My friends think I've developed a passion for dandelions since I talk about them a lot now.

Hi Jonathan. If all the people you talked about had a full understanding of anatomy, neurology and the human self preserving system, and then applied this to 35 years of full time teaching (I also have a descent playing background as well) they would be much closer to what I do and teach. A stadium full of feedback from students during this time does help as well.

In others words, a putting stroke - and BTW - ALL of your club positions are forward press, all of the time, at least in the videos I've seen, including this one. I've never seen any other instructor advise the stance that I see in these videos - arm and club in one alignment creates a heavy forward press at address - and I dont believe anybody on tour plays like that do they?
