I think that when we use the term 'self reliance' in this context, it means, as a prime factor, reliance upon oneself to achieve the outcomes we desire. From these videos we can see how much of Shawn goes into physically and mentally shaping the projects he's envisaging. The physical demands alone are enormous. It takes real courage to routinely deal with such demands and difficulties. For me, what makes these videos so especially enjoyable is Shawn's sincere and respectful character, and his 'self' discipline. These are great qualities to see in a human being.

Your name Strike The Root reminds me of this quote: "There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root, and it may be that he who bestows the largest amount of time and money on the needy is doing the most by his mode of life to produce that misery which he strives in vain to relieve", by Henry Thoreau, from his book "Walden". I have watch Shawn’s channel for about three years now and the only thing I have noticed that is different is Shawn is getting a little older as this life will create. Nice job on the "J" stroke to make your canoe track in the same direction without having to constantly change paddling sides I have seen way too many canoeing videos where the paddler has to switch sides because they don't know how to make the slight correction at the end of their stroke to compensate for the power portion of their stroke. I taught canoeing for quite a few years at Boy Scout camps, and this was one of the most difficult skills for students to master. Even "Daniel Boon" and other presumed outdoorsmen shown on tv and movies have not taken the trouble to learn this skill. It is a pleasure to watch someone who knows how to properly paddle.

I love the scene you walk in the rain. When I watched you just keep moving forward in the rain, I felt how strong you are physically and mentally. No matter what happened, you keep moving forward.That was a great scene.

Before the idea of leaving the cabin, Shaun had always said that he wanted to build a large cabin for his family and here is the opportunity comes and we will follow moment by moment the new construction operations.

Dah nah nah nah , dah nada nada nada, duh nah nah NUH! ( your theme song!) Lol, I shed a tear as you left the old cabin. The memories are so bittersweet. Thanks for always moving forward. With all my gardeners heart I wanted you to start the garden first!!! That clay and loam looks excellent!!! 👍👍But footings must come first, and we must now have the patience of Cali as she waits for her hotdog throw-for the new cabin! It’s gonna be epic! Thanks for showing us how it is DONE!!!

I want to commend you. I am an old lady whose father knew how to do all the things you excel in living with the land , nature and God. I cannot get enough of your site. You convey the best in mans self reliance and love of the environment he lives in. Watching you is like having a beautiful spiritual experience. I feel sad for the people who will never get it.

I watched the build of the old homestead as it was progressing, I believe I found the channel early on, when there were just a couple of episodes on, what a journey, man, I loved it. I'm even more hyped for this new build, can't wait for the next episode! Cheers to you, Shawn, what a legend you are!

I´m not a "dog-person", I never treat animals bad, but I´m not a person who jumps down on the floor to cuddle with them. I´ve always had an attitude of a clear distinction between humans and animals. But I gotta say watching this video, I felt inspired. Seeing the life-joy in that dog, exploring and playing in nature, but always circling back to Shawn. Then away again for another adventure! It´s a beautiful thing, and I think I got a new appreciation for the consciousness that´s in those furry creatures. Maybe when I meet a dog next time, I can interact with it on a deeper level than before. From one creature to another, on more equal terms :)

They can cleay communicate (see Bunny the dog of Billi the cat on YT) and can think and communicate thought processes to humans if given the opportunity. Not much difference between them and us

You miss out on a lot by not being a dog person. They have tons of personality and sometimes a wicked sense of humor. I had one dog that would steal the kitchen towel off the counter and parade in front of me till I paid attention to her. This was a big dog. She wanted to be chased and get attention. She never touched anything else or tore the towels it was more of a look at me thing. I really miss her poor thing got cancer at 6 yrs.

dogs > humans....there is a saying about a dog being a man's best friend for a reason
@catherineshaw11223 жыл бұрын
Humans and animals are definitely different on many levels but at the fundamental core we all have the same impulses and needs. All it takes is one connection to a four footed one to be tuned into their personalities. Cali is a marvelous teacher.

I've always had dogs my whole life. Some I've been closer to than others. But the older I get..the gentler I become not just with dogs but humans as well. My dogs know everything. They read stress and energy and will always be there for me and my wife no matter what happens until they pass. They understand things on a level we as humans mostly cannot. My wife fell last night and got hurt....the one dog still has not left her side and the other does constant check-ins.

I still feel bad for you that you needed to leave your old place that you worked so hard upon. Yet, I can easily see that you are VERY happy to begin construction upon the new homestead. From your earnest labors upon the old you will be able to produce an even better place for your family. I look forward to seeing this all come to fruition for you. All the best from Pennsylvania!

I have been a member of this channel for so long now, I remember the first log you put down, on your first cabin. Then when you put the floor down, I was like, why is he chatting the wood planks. This journey has been annoying, cause I can't do this myself! Inspiring, knowing that anyone who is willing to sacrifice, their material world, great happiness will come. Beautiful, just the scenery, everything that you have shared, putting in your first woodstove in the old cabin, building the Sauna and the extra cabin, for your wife. I believe that Dick Proenneke would be in awe of your accomplishments!? Thank You, for the years of uploads! A special THANKS, to Calorie, for making me laugh and smile, just seeing how happy she always is and her always wagging tail!!

Mrs. Shawn, you seem to have made a happy family with plenty of freedom for a solid marriage and happy times together and apart. It’s obvious that Shawn and you understand each other, and that has resulted in a strong bond for you both AND your daughters. God bless you both with continued happiness and health.

Beautiful vid. I find myself being sad for you and the memories (we've made as we have all been along with you) you've built. But that smile and twinkle in your eyes at 22:16 says it all. My dad and I used to camp all over Algonquin from when I was 10 up through college. Watching your vids bring back such amazing memories. There is such a yearning in mans heart that only nature can satisfy. Looking forward to this new adventure.

Do you actually sense the difference in the "feel" of this new homestead area Shawn ??? I get a completely different sense about this area from the old place ....and that's just thru the video. So much more peaceful and content. It's just a beautiful sense of serenity.
