Shawn, I won't claim to have watched every single one of your "My Self Reliance" videos, but it is certainly north of 85% of them. It might even be higher than that. That episode was, hands down, the best single episode you have done to date. It had everything. A brief explanation from you at the beginning about what you were going to do. You cut down the tree and got it out of the woods. Some safety tips, then off the log was being dragged. You cut it up into lumber with just the right amount of time spent on it. The bit with the termites/insects was perhaps the *only* part which could have used a little discussion with the audience again, but never mind. It looked a little more ominous and even added a little tension with you bringing the boards in and then looking at them more closely. You glued the boards together and got the door finished and installed! Then some great footage of the wilderness, blowing snow (the white out was great) and a montage featuring both a worm's eye view and drone's eye views of white tailed deer, the creek, water, Maximum CANADA™. Music was great and editing was very well done. This episode had it all. I have to strain to pick holes or suggest my expectations weren't met at any point. It was long but didn't feel long. It was the PERFECT length. You nailed this one and stuck the landing. Gold Star from the teacher; take a bow.

Mr. James! I'm a 30+ year Law Enforcement Officer and am proud of my profession and stand tall with my fellow men & women who have dedicated themselves into making other peoples lives & communities safe! Due to the reckless and unconscionable actions of few, the remainder of us have been unfairly biased against and forever tarnished. Why do I tell you this? After a long 40 hour week of putting my life on the line for others (FYI, I wouldn't change a thing), everyday, your videos serve as my resuscitation and remind me that this world is still a Beautiful place. I hope and pray that more people get the opportunity to watch your videos, so they too can get as much pleasure out-of-them as we ALL do. Unfortunately we dont have Spruse here in Australia. First few months of my chippies apprentiship many many many moons ago, my boss showed me this smallish board he had kept wrapped in raggs. It was his little piece of treasure lolol. He placed it in the side vice, grabbed his 600mm plane and ran some shaveings off its edge and said smell this. 😅😅 Its was beautiful i must say. He proceeded to tell me about its qualities and what it was mainly used for. Predominantly in Canada and the States. Great memories. I would actually love to go to Canada and make a sic old school rocking chair from Spruse and bring it back for it to become my family airloom to leave behind. Just a short story of what your title reminded me of. Cheers.😉👌👍

So not a bad few days all things considered and now he has built a proper door, so wildlife cannot visit and stay out of the bad weather, as I'm sure I smelt Squirrel on the wind. Well that is it for this video so remember give Dad a big thumbs up and consider subscribing if you have not already, as I hear him say its all about the algorithm's whatever they are - I'm just a dog as you well know - so Woof Woof ....

Glad you had a fire and hot drink and food to warm you up. As a northerner I advise wearing layers and not too tight. Dry socks are very important as once your feet get cold the rest of you very quickly gets cold too. Having a change of gloves is great as you can dry one pair while wearing the other pair. Having several gallons of water on hand so that you can have drinking water and flush toilets is helpful also. I hope that your Spring is lush and green and that your Summer and Fall are drought free. You deserve it.

I grew up this way on a small farm in the 1960s and 70s. It was always forest work in the winter to get wood for the stove and fireplace then also to cut planks from the trees in the sawmill. We always dried the planks over the summer and first chopped the wood and let it dry. It was a lot of work. I later educated myself and became a forest worker for some years. At that time we also had a lot of snow in the winters. We just cut branches with the chainsaw very close to the tree so there was no part sticking out. Because if you have small parts of the branches left they function as an anchor when you try to move the log and it makes it much more difficult. It is also less damage to the wood with a chainsaw than with an axe and that is good if you are going to make planks. But that is what we did. You should also use more protection, especially for the ears. I enjoy watching your videos and remember the struggle it was to live like that even if I am in Northern Europe,

The way you work reminds me of the way my beloved stepdad would work. Steady and with purpose and quality of outcome. Thank you for your program. It's made my heart light with wonderful memories of our farm when we were first there

I have watched every one of your videos. Right now with all the chaos going on in my life, two things bring me solace when I'm down. Daily prayers. And your videos.

I know!! I shoveled the snow for 5 minutes and got a huge blister on my hand. How does he do it?

Fabby in every respect. It fascinates me that KZbin home made films are so much more engaging than mega budget films. Must be something to do with the filmmaker’s commitment to a chosen path through life. Beautiful.

Great looking door. Love that we were brought along from the harvesting of the wood to the finished product. Great video.

Every time Shawn makes something (like this Dutch door) and puts it in its place, does anybody else say in their head "like a glove"?

Okay Shawn, NOW I’m impresses! The craftsmanship, ingenuity and sheer GRIT that it took to craft that door from a tree that you feld is beyond reproach. You had me a bit befuddled when you cut it in half, at an angle WITH a handsaw no less, til I realized the Dutch door concept. VERY nice touch! I am curious tho, how long did it actually take you to rip it to the proper dimensions by hand? I truly commend you for not using ANY power tools to make the door, not sure many could make a straight cut consistently, but with the practice you’ve had I guess it’s second nature by now to you. Also, doubling the pipe clamps to make a longer one was a trick I’d NEVER seen another woodworker use but one I’ll never forget and use in the future. I’ve been a hobby woodworker for 30 years, and I’ve learned a TON watching how your using the tools of our ancestors property. I resort old tools as well and use them often as well. Keep it up and I’ll keep watching!!!

What this guy does with a dead tree and one pair of 50 year old hands is a wonder to behold. What he does with a stationary video camera in the wilderness is another. It's all good. Really good.

That was a really cool way to use two pipe clamps to span the door!

Cali is testing if the tree falls by itself. And then it goes... what a giant, falling! That deep snowwhite blue snow, amazing. And these elegant small birds, meeting on the top of a branch... beautiful. Little jewels in nature. That was pretty hard work with that log, sinking to your knees in the snow. Gosh, there's always wood for a fire, isn't it? And oh a door in 2 halves, so that you can hang over the lower part, chatting with the neighbours that don't pass by. Is that what you call a Dutch door? I had no idea, and I"m Dutch 😄

Thank you so much for the beautiful drone scenes and all of the hard work that goes into making these videos. I am grateful to you and your wife for the time it takes to make these videos absolutely breathtaking!

Why is a dutch door project video so beautifully captivating when it pales in magnitude compared to the genius involved in the big picture of planning the construction of the cabin step by step, measuring and cutting so spot on, architectural planning, cinema photography, editing, cooking, gardening, knowledge of the woods and nature. Plus being articulate in conveying philosophical thought. I believe a dog's temperament and demeanor are a reflection of its master's. Thank you for all that you give us.
