My Self Reliance

Жыл бұрын

Reflecting back on the last 2 years spent building an off grid log cabin alone in the Canadian wilderness.
Thanks for watching and Happy New Year! This video is the full version of the 9 minute video on my other channel (Shawn James), which you can watch here: • 2 Years Alone Building...
They both document just the log cabin exterior build, not the creation of the rest of the wilderness homestead, such as the outhouse, food gardens, greenhouse, etc., which can be viewed weekly or by following along in the Playlists on both channels. I'll create and upload an interior cabin video once it's finished later this winter.

I think people under estimate the overall difficulty of such a task that this man accomplished. The strength, the accuracy, time management (seasons, weather, daylight), the mental aspect (being secluded, wild animals, not close to healthcare, absent from family), oh and documenting all of it, editing and everything else that I missed. My hats off to Shawn. “My self Reliance” I couldn’t thin of a better title. Happy New Year!

I make no judgement in what caused this persons renal failure. At the age of 60, I was disgusted with my health and realized if I didn’t change my diet, I would face a disease ridden senior life. I changed my diet to LOW CARB…in 10 months, I lost 50 lbs, got off 7 medications and had the best blood test results ever. I eat one 2k-2.5k calorie meal a day between 4-8pm. I fast 20 hours per day and I walk 8 miles every other day. I still follow this way of eating and exercise.

I remember thinking then that the Lord was going to give him a better home and more beautiful piece of land. So many prayers later coupled with an incredible tenacity and ingenuity very few can muster, Shawn has built a beautiful home for himself and his wife. ❤ & ✊🏻 for this man from us all here. @@madd5 Average home price in the US is 428k, the average yearly salary is $54k. Average home price in the US in 1970 was 24k, Average salary was $6100. So it costs 8 full average salaries to buy a home today. In 1970 it only cost 4 and a lot of the homes being purchased today are the same homes that were being purchased in 1970. Average cost of a private college education in the US today is $36k, in 1970 it was $1800. 2/3 the average salary today. A bit over 1/4 the average salary in 1970. Average renters in 1970 paid a little over a 1/4 of their monthly income on rent. Today Average renters pay nearly 1/2 of their earnings on rent. Average Salaries for college grads is even more stark. In 1970 it was 10k. Today it is 55k. An average home today costs 8 full college grad yearly salaries. In 1970 it only cost 2 1/2. There is a reason "Children" today feel that capitalism (at least todays current corrupt corporatist version of capitalism) has failed them.

@@madd5 OMG another child who thinks anyone criticizing the current system must be a communist. Believe it or not, back in the 40s and 50s, when a whole family of four, a dog and cat, with a two car garage in the suburbs, etc, could be comfortably maintained on _one person's very average nine to five job,_ that was still capitalism. Countries that have free university education, universal healthcare, _those countries are capitalist systems too._ The choices are not only "suffer under the current *incredibly unbalanced* system" or "turn into China" you know. There are an infinite number of ways to improve people's lives within a capitalist system that we are not doing -- mainly because people have been told to believe that any improvement is socialism and bad for... some reason they don't understand and can't explain.

This is more like a real log cabin construction compared to some others which I see using commercial lumber. I am very impressed with the effort he is putting into this build. Just digging down through those roots and hard dirt reminded me of how hard it is to do. Moving all those large logs is very dangerous and you have to know what you are doing not to get hurt. Rather than the chain saw board cutter I would have gone with the one with the large circular saw blade and used it to make regular lumber for the floor joists, wall studs and rafters. But then it would not look like a log cabin. I don't know about using wood for the below grade foundation, rock and some kind of cement would be my choice. He knows what he is doing because he always has the right tool to get it done. Kudos to all the great video shots of the work, makes me feel like I am right there watching it being done.

Absolutely, not just the difficulty but the determination and effort put forth is off the charts. Lots of people today can't even take their garbage cans to the street.

Absolutely incredible watching the seasons change during the build, fit and finish of this cabin is astounding, the will and determination is off the charts. The ridge beam and purlins and the trust you had with that cable and hoist system, it is incredible that you were not seriously injured alone in the middle of nowhere, you must have spent weeks, just keeping the tools sharp. I have never witnessed anything like this in my entire life, absolutely incredible, my friend. You have built yourself a fortress, and filmed it for all to see, what an accomplishment, hats off to ya sir, this cabin will stand for decades, all the best for you and your family in 2023, we thankyou for bringing us along.

Shawn really outdid himself on this build . Just hoisting those giant logs overhead had me nervous.. What a magnificent cabin.

Much respect. Reminds me of Noah’s dedication, work ethic and craftsmanship. I spent some time building pole barns. Best job I ever had. No phones, no computers, very few tools and no office drama. Great therapy for the soul. Still, I’m no match with this gentleman.

Happy New Year Shawn, as we say Goodbye to 2022 and Welcome 2023 you have a lot to be proud of mainly being able to replicate Dick Proenneke in his move to Alaska in his 50's - he lived almost another life in the wilderness. Wishing you and your family the best for 2023!!

That’s quite the craftsmanship you have. That takes a lot of knowledge and know how to do something that complex let alone doing it by yourself and document your build. I so wished I would have done something like this in my life. It would take the rest of my days to do it now. A tip of my hat goes to you sir.

I am quite amazed by the work you are doing. Now I am not a tecnical guy but having worked in a construction company for a few years I am quite sure that none of those workers I know could build a house like this on their own especially with those limited tecnical tools. My sincere respect! By watching all you videos I feel myself very relaxed. One special thought was coming to my mind: Back to the nature…back to our roots. Thanks so much for sharing with us such beautiful and harmonouse moments like these. Please take care. All the best to you and your family which includes also your dog. Greetings from Norway️️️

This is different from the previous. Behind everything is a reason. As I can see you learned a lot from the previous house built. And into this house you put all of your skill and knowledge. This is not a house this is a home :). God bless you sir! You are a role model for lot of us!

I envy your spirit, tenacity and brilliance to engineer and execute so many projects at once (and see them through to the end) is beyond motivating. Thank you for sharing your life- Happy New Year!☺️

Shawn, what can I say ? You're THE MAN ! You literally built this incredibly spacious and high quality cabin all by yourself (Including working straight through the Winter months). This is a lasting personal accomplishment and provision for your family. When you're old, and sitting in your rocking chair by the fire, then you can look around at all you survey and be satisfied in the work of hour hands. You are a focused and determined craftsman. This is a very inspiring feat, and it is no small thing you have done, Sir ! I salute you. 👌👍😃

Wow! If I hadn’t seen this with my own eyes I would never have believed one man built this cabin. Using nothing but skill, knowledge and tools that were used by his forefathers. That cabin will still be standing 100 years from now. This is the first flog I’ve seen from this channel, I’m going to binge watch the others now. I’m just in awe .

I'm always impressed watching you do this, not just for your skill and dedication, but also for your planning and understanding of your own capablities. Every task undertaken is one that's within your ablities, if only just barely. That's an increadable amount of good judgement.

I must say how impressed that I am. My shoulders ache watching this, but I know how rewarding it feels when structures come to fruition. You really know your stuff.. with brace and bit, no less. I've designed (drawn on paper) things and built them by hand, and know how much work it can be.
