I cut down a tall, dead standing spruce tree beside the site of my new off grid log cabin to mill into planks for a dutch door for my timber frame and square log workshop.

Shawn, I won't claim to have watched every single one of your "My Self Reliance" videos, but it is certainly north of 85% of them. It might even be higher than that. That episode was, hands down, the best single episode you have done to date. It had everything. A brief explanation from you at the beginning about what you were going to do. You cut down the tree and got it out of the woods. Some safety tips, then off the log was being dragged. You cut it up into lumber with just the right amount of time spent on it. The bit with the termites/insects was perhaps the *only* part which could have used a little discussion with the audience again, but never mind. It looked a little more ominous and even added a little tension with you bringing the boards in and then looking at them more closely. You glued the boards together and got the door finished and installed! Then some great footage of the wilderness, blowing snow (the white out was great) and a montage featuring both a worm's eye view and drone's eye views of white tailed deer, the creek, water, Maximum CANADA™. Music was great and editing was very well done. This episode had it all. I have to strain to pick holes or suggest my expectations weren't met at any point. It was long but didn't feel long. It was the PERFECT length. You nailed this one and stuck the landing. Gold Star from the teacher; take a bow.

Mr. James! I'm a 30+ year Law Enforcement Officer and am proud of my profession and stand tall with my fellow men & women who have dedicated themselves into making other peoples lives & communities safe! Due to the reckless and unconscionable actions of few, the remainder of us have been unfairly biased against and forever tarnished. Why do I tell you this? After a long 40 hour week of putting my life on the line for others (FYI, I wouldn't change a thing), everyday, your videos serve as my resuscitation and remind me that this world is still a Beautiful place. I hope and pray that more people get the opportunity to watch your videos, so they too can get as much pleasure out-of-them as we ALL do. You and the amazing Callie are truly inspirational and I wish you continued peace, joy, & happiness. Please, always be safe and God Bless You! Again, Thank You. 👍🏻 🙏🏻

I had to find you again so I could say Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Not just to you but your family and work family..You made and amazing comment and. i wanted to let you know , that so many of us know that not all law enforcement are bad. We thankyou for you and fellow officers for your service. We know it would be impossible to have quality of life without you folks . My son was also in law enforcement , he left and went in too construction , in 2 years he had his own company. I gave him the heads up on Shawna video's way back when he was and officer . Always stressed and deaths of the young really ate at him. Then came disrespect towards him. Along with fellow officers . Sir! Keep up the relaxation. Shawn has no idea the good he has done with these videos. I hope peace , comfort , and blessings for you and yours. Please stay safe. Deborah in New Mexico age 70

Unfortunately we dont have Spruse here in Australia. First few months of my chippies apprentiship many many many moons ago, my boss showed me this smallish board he had kept wrapped in raggs. It was his little piece of treasure lolol. He placed it in the side vice, grabbed his 600mm plane and ran some shaveings off its edge and said smell this. 😅😅 Its was beautiful i must say. He proceeded to tell me about its qualities and what it was mainly used for. Predominantly in Canada and the States. Great memories. I would actually love to go to Canada and make a sic old school rocking chair from Spruse and bring it back for it to become my family airloom to leave behind. Just a short story of what your title reminded me of. Cheers.😉👌👍

I'm a 65 y/o grandma and I love watching your channel, every time I think I've watched them all I find one that I missed! I wish a lot of younger people would watch and be inspired to do what you are doing, I also think you would make a great mentor, you seem to be very kind, your def hard working and are able to articulate without being too technical so that even someone who has never done anything more than walk in the woods, be able to understand, if not how, what you are doing and then think oh! that's how its done. God Bless and just keep on doing you!

Now did you see that folks, I had myself a snow bath and was a happy doggie and what happens I follow Dad into the tree line and he thumps a log and the snow and ice from above drops on me, right where I considered myself all clean and respectable - see this Dad of mine, no consideration for his four legged friend but I forgive him as I did manage to find one of my missing toys. So not a bad few days all things considered and now he has built a proper door, so wildlife cannot visit and stay out of the bad weather, as I'm sure I smelt Squirrel on the wind. Well that is it for this video so remember give Dad a big thumbs up and consider subscribing if you have not already, as I hear him say its all about the algorithm's whatever they are - I'm just a dog as you well know - so Woof Woof ....

But at 17 + she had a brain tumor that put her in pain and seizures. So we chose today to say goodbye. She could no longer control her legs. So sad tonight. But know she a fortunate girl like Cali to have had a long and happy life. Keep Cali close to your heart. She is also a treasure.

Why is a dutch door project video so beautifully captivating when it pales in magnitude compared to the genius involved in the big picture of planning the construction of the cabin step by step, measuring and cutting so spot on, architectural planning, cinema photography, editing, cooking, gardening, knowledge of the woods and nature. Plus being articulate in conveying philosophical thought. I believe a dog's temperament and demeanor are a reflection of its master's. Thank you for all that you give us.

Okay Shawn, NOW I’m impresses! The craftsmanship, ingenuity and sheer GRIT that it took to craft that door from a tree that you feld is beyond reproach. You had me a bit befuddled when you cut it in half, at an angle WITH a handsaw no less, til I realized the Dutch door concept. VERY nice touch! I am curious tho, how long did it actually take you to rip it to the proper dimensions by hand? I truly commend you for not using ANY power tools to make the door, not sure many could make a straight cut consistently, but with the practice you’ve had I guess it’s second nature by now to you. Also, doubling the pipe clamps to make a longer one was a trick I’d NEVER seen another woodworker use but one I’ll never forget and use in the future. I’ve been a hobby woodworker for 30 years, and I’ve learned a TON watching how your using the tools of our ancestors property. I resort old tools as well and use them often as well. Keep it up and I’ll keep watching!!!

I'm loving the treat at the end format, not to take away from the standing tree to installed door. Never saw an angled one before but it makes a lot of sense. So glad this was long.

Another remarkable job building that door. One day it is a tree standing in the forest, a day or so later and it is your workshop door.

I agree. One of your best ever. To see that tree turned into useful door was awesome. And that you could make that 45 degree cut with a hand saw amazed me. Loved seeing that nose cap on the log to make dragging it easier. And just the beautiful views of your new place. You've got a much better slice of heaven now. And running water! What a huge difference that will make.

What this guy does with a dead tree and one pair of 50 year old hands is a wonder to behold. What he does with a stationary video camera in the wilderness is another. It's all good. Really good.

Gotta get when the getting is good ... Gotta do when the weather is good ... today was a beautiful day - sunshine, outdoor thermometer reached almost 60F & snow on the roof was melting ... waste not, want not ... keep up the great work!

It's hard to believe that something so beautiful could be so dangerous. One slip and fall while cutting a tree down, walking through the woods, along a stream and it could all be over in just a couple of seconds. You maybe found when things thaw out or you may never be found. I had a dog that came very close to drowning after jumping in a stream for a log that was floating down stream and just 20 yards or so was a log jam that he surely would have been swept under if I had not gotten to him and pulled him out. If I had fallen in I wouldn't be here today. The current was just to fast. So you see it's not only important to watch were you are but where you might end up if you should slip and fall. Thank You Shawn your cinematography is amazing! I'd love to see you come out with a calendar, one including Cali and you in the great outdoors?

Shawn you made me realize a easier way to cut the boards with my Alaskan chain saw mill. The board on top so simple. Forget the rails. Straight board for sure next time and square to square up. Thanks so much for videos. God bless friend and stay safe. We are working to start our off grid cabin. A lot of muddy trails right now where we live but we’re doing what we can.
