Three years later they would be jamming this tune out for 20-45 minutes.

In 1972, the band took "Playin' In The Band" into the stratosphere. Virtually ANY version from that year is a masterpiece....!!

I thought I'd suggest this band "Dead & Company: Touch Of Grey LIVE from Raleigh NC 8/16/21" Dead & Company is an American rock band. It was formed in 2015 with a line up of former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir (guitar, vocals), Mickey Hart (drums), and Bill Kreutzmann (drumms) along with John Mayer (guitar, vocals), Oeital Burbridge (bass, percussion, vocals), and last but not least, Jeff Chimenti (keyboards). Weir, Hart & Kreutzmann are called the "Core Four" but these three are the surviving members. They tried to reincarnate "The Grateful Dead" and introduced a fresh faced John Mayer. Mayer is another masterful guitarist. He can play the heck out of some blues, for sure. lol

The great thing about this song has always been the jam that ensues in the middle, which is not represented here. Try one from 72, 73, or 74. Diehard Deadheads, if you have not heard the 11-18-72 Houston Hofheinz Pavilion version, most of you probably have, you should run, dont walk, to your nearest Archive portal. Its total 72-cocaine-fueled-insanity.

There Wasn't a GD studio version of this song. This was it! Bob Weir did an excellent studio version on his solo album - Ace. This extended studio version has a caterwauling jam on it supplied by the Grateful Dead!

Didn’t Mickey actually write it originally as “Pump Song”

@@UranusHz420 Can't remember if Hart wrote 'Pump Song' and Weir stole it! Would have to dig out the 'Rolling Thunder' LP to check. Can't remember which came out first, Ace or R Thunder.

The Dead actually WERE the "backup" musicians on Weir's 1972 ACE solo album - including "Playing in The Band". Unfortunately, the studio version of the song on ACE is somewhat marred by Donna Godchaux's wailing backing vocals...IMHO! The usual middle jam on the 1971 live album was apparently edited out and seamlessly bridged for the final 4:40 album cut.

Nice. Terrapin Station is the closest they come to prog rock on the album of the same name. Brilliant tune.

The studio version on Bob Weir's"solo" album Ace is excellent. The album is really a Grateful Dead album since it is solo only because it features only Bobby songs. I personally think the version of Playing In The Band on Ace is one of the best studio tracks the band ever laid down

That was a proto version of Playin', By the next year, the song really opened up--there's a version from 1974 that is more than 45 minutes. This here is the gold standard of Playin' from 8-27-72. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZm6lGuNiq-Eock. FYI, Mickey Hart (the second drummer) left the band from 2-19-71 until 10-20-74

This album was recorded during February and March of 1971 when many of these songs were being test driven in front of the audience for the first time. If you wanna explore this album a little deeper, check out the opening track Bertha for a nice, fired up, show opener. Then check out The Other One for a taste of what the Dead were the masters of. Not just being a Jam Band, but the musical exploration that leads to the big build up followed by the tension release. Keep up the good work.
