Loved the original but this is absolutely beautiful. Gary Brooker's voice has actually gotten better with age and with the orchestra this song is raised to another level.

So SAD that we lost GARY BROOKER on Feb. 19, 2022, yet another one of our wonderful performers from the '60s (greatest decade for music) that have joined that big rock band in the sky. RIP Gary Brooker, and thanks for all that fabulous music, which we can continue to enjoy until our death.

Released as the DEBUT ( ! ) single of the newly named Procol Harum in May, 1967. Over 10 million units sold, it became, along with Sgt. Pepper's, the soundtrack of the Summer of Love.

Gary Brooker liked playing with orchestras, I saw Procol Harum back in the 70’s and he did Conquistador with a full orchestra and it was amazing but this is my fave song by them. This song was WAY AHEAD of it it’s time for 1967. Just beautiful.

It’s the late 60’s. I’m in the gym of my high school for my first dance. I ask Nancy Harris to dance and she accepts. This song is played by the DJ and Gary Brooker starts to sing. I feel the waist of her and smell the perfume of a girl and hear this. Tell me this song isn’t important to me.

@@janetsilverhawk7204 I was 20 when this came out and just finishing my second year at Kent State University. I LOVE this song, and the ORGAN is what makes it Gary Brooker's voice sounds just as good as when he first sang it in 1967. Sadly, Gary Brooker passed away on Feb. 19, 2022. RIP Gary and THANK you for all the GREAT music you and the rest of Procal Harum made for us back then.

@ RONNIE, I TOO am a HUGE BEATLES fan and of all the music of the '60s and you are right, A WHITER SHADE OF PALE is DEFINATELY one of the greatest in the '60s. Did you know that THIS song is PAUL and LINDA McCARTNEY's "SONG"? Yes, that's true, when Paul first met Linda in a club, A WHITER SHADE OF PALE was playing. He spotted her at another table with a group of people, and when she got up with the group to leave, Paul said he jumped up in front of her as she nearly passed his table, and said "Hi, I'm Paul." and he said he and the people he was with were going to go to another club and asked her if she wanted to join them. She said yes (well WHAT WOMAN would NOT say "yes" to Paul McCartney. That was the start of their relationship.

Thank you for this reaction. Procol Harum is a British band and this song was their first hit single from 1967. The original recording has been given a 50th anniversary stereo remaster and it's well worth listening to. Gary Brooker is the singer. Keith Reid wrote the lyrics. Other great songs of theirs include A Salty Dog, Homburg, Shine on Brightly, and Grand Hotel.

I understand how you feel. As a 13 year old Junior High kid, I was awestruck the first time I heard this song. That was in 1967. In many ways, Gary Brooker's voice has only gotten better. The organ riff in this, in my opinion, is legend. There is a song title ' Conquistador' from the same concert. You should give it a reaction also; I promise you won't be disappointed...........

In April 1967, Brooker began working as a singer-songwriter and formed Procol Harum with non-Paramounts Keith Reid (poet), Hammond organist Matthew Fisher, guitarist Ray Royer and bassist David Knights, Guy Stevens, their original manager, named the band after a Burmese cat, which had been bred by Eleonore Vogt-Chapman and belonged to Liz Coombes. The cat's "cat fancy" name was Procul Harun, Procul being the breeder's prefix.

Gary Brooker of the band Procol Harum wrote and first performed this song in 1967 with his six piece band. You can find this version on youtube. His voice is so much better now than it was back then. I had been reading online that the meaning of this song had to do with a sexual encounter gone awry but I disagree totally. Although some of the lines don't make since to me, it is obvious that the guy is performing before an audience and he's higher than a kite. He's feeling sick and wants to quit but the crowd called out for more. "The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away" is the effects of whatever drug he has taken. "When we called out for another drink, the waiter brought a tray." He's performing in a nightclub and drinks are served on a tray. I agree a lot of the song is mish-mash but Gary explained that. He said that he was high when he was writing it and some of the lines just fit the space he was trying to fill so he put it in. He's still a genius in my book. The music omg!!!

A couple of observations: you should get a set of headphones or ear buds. They make a huge difference in the sound of the music and the clarity of the lyrics. Also, the orchestra on this recording wasn't just any group of musicians...it was the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. It must have been an amazing experience to see this in person.

Gary Brooker's voice matured from the 1967 debut of this song and is phenomenal! The entry of the B3 organ with guitars and drums raises the ballad to a higher level. The sweet strains of the choir lift the arrangement heavenward. The finale with full orchestra, choir and members of Procol Harum is orgasmic!

🤔….. your reaction video was totally cool! First time you were here of your channel. Thank you, I enjoyed it. I have some comments, interpreting the lyrics of this song which gives it even a deeper dimension - I will share that at the end of this - (and sorry for this detailed commentary, but I think you will find it helpful if you listen to the song again and/or share it with others). Gary Brooker’s incredible singing in this live performance matched - or perhaps even exceeded - the quality of the original 1967 recording that took place 40 years earlier. The band’s name comes from a couple of possible sources. One of the band members in ‘67 had a cat named Procol Harum. This is Latin for “Far beyond these things”…. Personally, I think they named the band after the cat. 😁 This song and about 3 or 4 others defined the sound and the scene that was the “Summer of Love”. Unfortunately, that beautiful era only lasted about three years…. Innocence lost - marked by another outdoor concert in December ‘69 at Altamont - The Rolling Stones - they hired the Hells Angels motorcycle gang to be their “security” force - 4 people died that night. However, great music continued to come out from the late 60s all through to the mid 90s. But 1967 through Woodstock 1969 was magic. There has been much debate/misunderstanding regarding the lyrics. I believe I can unlock the mystery for you. The lyrics are mostly metaphorical. The song is about a young couple who are attending a party perhaps at a ballroom - maybe even on a ship. They were either entertainers for the crowd, or they were just part of the crowd dancing….”We skipped the Light Fandango” but instead did cartwheels across the floor, implying that they were having a great time, perhaps even on their way to getting drunk. The room seemed to be shaking apart as they “ordered another drink”, but the waiter brought a tray of many drinks. As the night wore on, the young man was fast becoming interested in having a more private intimate time with this young girl…. But yet through her near drunkenness, she sensed it, and became frightened. As the young man shuffled through his “playing cards” - a metaphor for looking for that winning hand to convince her to go with him - she again was unable or unwilling to give into him. Even as he told her stories, and lies about himself to impress and take advantage of her she knew she was potentially headed for trouble as “The truth was plain to see”. The vestal virgin metaphor clearly implied that she was young, inexperienced, and not ready for what she feared was his ultimate intent. But he kept on with his tales and lies, and he “would not let her be”…..ramping up the pressure on her to give in. This frightened her tremendously. I have heard, but I cannot confirm, that Gary Brooker and his cowriter actually wrote two more verses, that were never recorded. We will probably never hear the end of that story. Again, I want to say your reaction video was enjoyable to watch Well done.
