The bucket is too shallow for their size, you need to turn another bucket over and zip tie the buckets together, making it hard for the rat to get out or just use the trashcan rat trap with the walk the plank style rat trap. Just a suggestion. Use a dead mouse at the end of the plank for bait using the double plank.

Doesn't surprise me at all, Rats have been known to kill and eat snakes 4~5 times their length. They've been known to kill and eat pigeons twice their size.. some Rats will dive into water hunt and kill turtles, crabs, aquatic snakes, fish other aquatic rodents/scavengers.. back on land lizards and all sorts of small mammals. Worth also noting that House Cats generally don't hunt, kill and eat Rats.. our Cat even runs away from our pet Rats then usually they end up grooming each other. Dogs will kill Rats.. and are often a better deterrent than Cats. Tho Cats are a much better deterrent to Mice.

06:39 and THAT is why the Rat-Pack is so dangerous and treacherous - Even an unfamiliar RAT in their territory gets hunted and shredded- They use ultrasonic calls to converge on a food resource or enemy RAT. GET THE RATS SHAWN! Seriously though... forget the mice == get the rats... please. Side-note I HATE RATS... wild ones.. pets are cool!

You've showed us a trap like this awhile back. It used a bucket and walk the plank. Same idea. It was the best at catching large numbers of mice and rats. For mice, add water for a kill trap, as they will drown if the water is deep enough. For rats, the same thing, but a much larger bucket that's much taller and deeper water.

On a visit to Cheltenham with the military and bored of the pub crawl late one night I wandered off round town where I chanced upon a pet shop with two cages in the window, one containing a white rat and above it another full of mice. The bars of the mouse cage were too far apart and the mice were escaping. Every now and then one of the mice would go down the bars of the rat's cage whereupon the rat would seize it through the bars and devour it. It made for fantastic theatre and I wondered what in the morning the pet shop owner would think had happened.
