And at important events, each country played its own anthem. My father still knows part of the anthem of Soviet Azerbaijan Stalin was also Georgian. Why did Stalin want to Russify the Soviet Union?

Why in our colleges are we taught to have a visceral loathing for our own National Anthem, and to seethe with rage whenever we hear it played? As anthems go, nothing comes even close to it. Most anthems kind of suck: boring, pompous, obsolete, unwieldy pieces of music. Alexandrov's masterpiece is a genius of balance: It's majestic yet simple enough to be sung by school children, peaceful yet powerful, stirring and calming in equal measure, not overtly militaristic, but indeed subtly menacing, not overtly ethnic or "folk" but does channel "we the people"... In short it's timeless.
