Oh, then you can enjoy hours listening to the many, many versions of this beautiful song/poem. This version is in what I would call Irish Folk tradition. But it really is very English 😉

What a nice comment to make, authentic me. The song comes from so long before you were born but it is nice that you can appreciate what it means. Best wishes from a very old British soldier. I love your people.

@@abocas There were so many brilliant Irish men and women who did an excellent service in the Army in the old days of the British Empire, especially in British India and Burma. So, Irish Folk tradition and 'very English': do you honestly believe there was a big difference ??

@@jackgrant7356 It does (likely) contain some of the pagan customs which the Christians co-opted. I doubt it was an actual pagan song.

sorry, what about the colonial bullshit in this song? Like, and I'm sorry, the whole nostalgic pile about the best is like the worst and there ain't no ten commandment east of suez? This is a rapey, nasty old song! It's right up there with the old portuguese saying, there are no sins south of the equator! I'm dismayed to see Gen Z lapping it up.
