@danthomas90776 жыл бұрын
@@whitehouseonthehill I've raised chickens and turkeys both with natural sitting and an incubator. I think part of the issue with eggs not hatching is that the good quality feed we feed em makes their shells so hard that some chicks have a hard time cracking the shells, my heritage turkey eggs seemed to have that problem. I kind of figured that out when I had egg customers complaining they had to use a knife to cut open the eggs they'd get from me, said they had the toughest shells they'd ever seen. I know they say not to help, but I've helped a lot with excellent results, yes you learn when they need help and step in. Another bird tip I can share, I'm sure you're aware how chickens can peck on a wounded bird and create a bigger wound, to the point they'll kill with their pecking. I had meat chickens that would do that, had one they pecked a hole in its back, looking for a solution I though of what I could put on the would that the chickens wouldn't like, thought of pepper or something strong tasting, I had nothing but cinnamon? So I tried that by covering the chickens wound and whole back with cinnamon and it worked! Most chickens get one taste of the cinnamon and they will not touch it again, I had one chicken they'd pecked a hole in his head, I could see its skull, I coated its head with the cinnamon and it healed up and survived! Normally any would and the others will kill it for sure, cinnamon works!

My dad and I had to assist in hatching two chicks! One of them was a polish hen but she seemed to have something wrong with her. Over lots of feeding and teaching where food and water is she slowly improved! She is still the smallest chick in our flock but she is much better now! The second egg was a grey Araucanian chicken. Previously we had an egg which had a live araucaria in it but she dried up in the incubator and passed away. The shell layer seemed too thick. This was the same for the second egg. We assisted in her hatching and now she is the largest and strongest in the flock! Both are doing great now. Sorry to see the two ducklings passed but I’m happy to see the three living ones!

I love the way you have given that gift to your great kids, and shared it with us. Thank you.💜👍🏽. And: a dumb question I always have: could you keep a struggling hatchling or an egg warm in your shirt pocket the way we kangaroo-care premies or the way I used to carry rescued kittens in my overalls bib pocket? I have that instinct to think they need to listen to a warm heartbeat- I aspire to learn to raise just a few desert chickens or quail and will probably be found one day with rescuees snuggled carefully in a pocket like a baby in a front pack, so tell us if it can’t work in a pinch.

I had to help a chick hatch after my co-parenting silkies had abandoned the last egg out of 12 eggs so they had 11 chicks hatch. 2 died out of 12 including the one that I helped hatch and the parents killed one. My mom and I spent 3.5 hours using tweezers and a wet face cloth along with a q-tip, we used tweezers to pull away the shell with out breaking the membrane. She fell asleep just before she was ready to push out so we tickled her foot with the q-tip and she hatched, sadly she only lived about an hour before passing. But it was a cool experience and was my first time assisting in hatching a chick.

I have a duck, the little ones always follow around, one day she went missing and I found it in my backyard, dead. But the good thing was the chicks were ok, when I looked back I saw movement in the mom. I stroked my fingers down her throat and found a pulse. The little ones jumped on the mom. Chirping and breastfeeding off her. She was so happy and I remade her whole enclosure. She’s in the vet getting surgery for 3rd degree burns. So wish her luck.

Ten is a great age to raise chickens. Some are great pet breeds, like many of rhe bantam or small breeds, but don't lay as many eggs, maybe 20 a year. But best fun !

A good way to fix the balance issue is to fixate it in a sock 🧦 overnight
@hannahimwalle87285 жыл бұрын
NJC_ 2005 can you elaborate on that please? Any time I’ve had to help anything out of an egg, the result has been an issue with their legs and/or their balance. A solution would be much appreciated.
