She Can BUILD But Can She WELD?

Today's video is a change of pace from the house build projects as we work on adding a new pen into our farm system. Welding is a new skill that we are practicing while building our second tube steel pen for our livestock. This particular pen will be for our steer Bruce who has entered his "wild teenage" stage. Once completed this mobile pen will fit perfectly into our pasture/livestock management system of constantly moving our animals to maintain our pastures health, naturally prevent parasite issues in our livestock and naturally fertilize our pasture by evenly distributing our livestock's urine/manure.

30 year welder fabricator here, in my 30 years I only failed 1 x-ray, but I have seen worse welds from people calling themselves welders. You guys will get it figured out and will be burn rods and laying some great beads before ya know it. I have always encouraged women that have wanted to weld. Great to see you trying it, my wife just can't get past the splatter burns. But neither can our 20+ year old boys so it's not a woman thing. But I think it is great to walk into a shop or work site and see a woman welder. People use to think oh that's man's work, it's work for any man or woman who is talented enough to do the job as long as they do the job rite. Love the channel guys and look forward to seeing more videos.

Lincoln Electric {among others} sell a ladies cut welding jacket. tight up around the collar. they come jacket and "lab coat" length. no more spatter burns. shell look like a bad ass too. best hundred bucks you can spend. or a flame resistant shirt...35 bucks. really no reason for spatter burns. now grabbing something youve just welded. no cure for that yet.

Really the skills that you are taking on are the same skills that the farming world needed to make their homesteads work. Farmers/homesteaders are some of the smartest and most resourceful people that I know. My mother was raised on a several hundred acre farm. My fathers sister and her husband were Dairy Farmers. If you can use them, The best way to buy Corral panels is to find out where the closet place near you that's making them, and call them and buy a truckload from them. You can buy them for like half the price that farm Supply stores are selling them for. I got the 8ft 6 bar panels for $50 each, and they're $100 each at farm supply stores. But the place I bought them only sold them that cheap if I bought a truckload and if I didn't tell Tractor Supply they sold them to me. their truckload was 40 panels and 4 gated panels. They charged me $65 each for the gated panels, and they delivered them to my house. So I paid $2250 for them, and they would have cost me about $4500 from the store.

Angle of travel: Stick welding in the flat, horizontal and overhead positions uses a drag or backhand welding technique. Hold the electrode perpendicular to the joint, and then tilt the top in the direction of travel approximately 5 to 15 degrees. keep up the good work

Jip. If you find it hard to control the rod when striking you can hold the rod with one hand and the holder in another. That way when you are using a longer rod you will be able to have more control. Also keep in mind it can get hot (the longer you use the rod and the closer you hold it to the arc) so just move your hand thats holding the rod up towards the holder as the rod gets shorter.

O yeah and you mentioned you tend to go to fast. Try investing in a auto darken helmet. I prefer one that is adjustable. With the helmet you guys have now you only have one setting and depending on the light you might find it hard to see. I can guarantee you that when you use an auto helmet you will immediately see and feel the difference. Even with a cheap one you will be amazed at what you are able to see

Its been a few years and my memory isn't what it use to be probably from breathing welding fumes, but when you weld on galvanized metal it puts off a deadly toxic gas and there are special respirators for this purpose just FYI, your probably ok being outside just don't breath while your welding. love what you guys are doing. keep up and be safe

Yep after I welded some galvanized steel some 2 hours later I was getting the flu turns out I was getting poisoned from the galvanized steel, it happened a few times but caught it in time,plus twice I cut myself from the galvanized steel and got blood poisoning from it .

We did diagonal bracing on the sheep pen but aren't sure its needed. We decided to wait it out on this pen, test it without and add it later if we feel its necessary. We will keep you posted on what we find!

I grew up on a farm. Women for the most part don’t weld, so when I say you welding I was so excited. Never give up, keep learning and perfecting perfection! Just watch your hair, both yours and the beard! On the other hand, I want you to know that you need to do what you WANT to and NEED to do. Eating meat is a good thing. Y’all have a plan that works, and the people who have an opinion, well they are not doing anything except finding fault. So y’all just keep on doing exactly what you are doing! And PS. This is true but you can provide constructive feedback on how ut could be done even better for the animals. Maybe a bigger tractor (like twice the size) would already be a much better life standard for the animal and you only need to move the animals 1/4th as much.

I use to be so jealous of my brother when he was allowed to work outside with my dad fixing things. I use to ask as a bored little girl to help out. Dad would say just sit there and be pretty ...I believe a woman or a girl is beautiful when they have skills that not reflextion of their gender.

We understand everyone runs their animals differently. We plan to follow mob grazing method- without the mob since we only have one cow. His mob is in the pen next to him where each group puts pressure on a particular section of pasture for half to a full day and then is moved to the next section. The animals come to learn and trust the routine
