@@baewuxian I think it's underrated because it's arguably one of the most important movies that helped Korean cinema break through in the west (along with other films of course) but it could've/should've been even bigger. It didn't get nominated for an Oscar because Korea sent in another film that year which didn't end up getting nominated either. I truly believe the Handmaiden had been sent in, the hype would've been even bigger and it would've won Best International Film... Not to say the Oscars are what makes or breaks a film in the west of course, but the hype it creates is clear, especially when we look at Parasite for instance. The Handmaiden is better imo. Truly one of the greatest films I've seen in my life

For the story it could have went a totally another way round. What if, due to the terrible life she had, shes just lonely for someone that actually understands her. Her bf doesn't and her mum obviously doesn't too. So to let herself not be lonely on her death day, she ordered this clone service and she treat her like a twin sister. She broke off from her mum and bf to go enjoy her final moments with her clone twin, only to find out they would not be dying and they both live together happily trying to pay off the payments for the clone service. Original would not be lonely anymore and the clone can continue living too. I mean i know the story is meant to be creepy and dark and stuff but hey, imagination is free x'D I just don't understand why can't 2 people of the same exist like the person said. Like .... have they not seen twins?? Just let the original change their name and either live back with their family (like an additional sibling if the family is nice to begin with) or if their family is f**ked up, just go off and restart your life?? The credit card and money and everything can be transferred prior can they not? lol Doppelgangers exists and names can be changed so i don't see whats the big deal with having both of the clones and original living.
