Norm is hard to explain. He's the comic relief for other comedians. He's the uncle that tells you dad jokes, then turns them into something they shouldn't be at the end. The process of the joke, becomes the joke. And he knows you hate the joke. So he tells another joke.

Conan’s favourite comedian was Norm (so was Letterman’s) He always plays that host that is wanting Norm to finish but that is part of the act because Conan Knows whatever he gets from Notm is gold. This is a high Iq joke because it is laughing at all professors of logic who use deductive reasoning. He is really laughing at the quality of the modern university in terms of reasoning. Comedians are pattern recognizers, they are often some of the most intelligent people in society in any field. Norm was the top of the top and the smartest comedians knew that about him.

Norm uses a different style for interview, late night talk show, his own stand up. The only thing that is consistent is he plays an every man character that he never really breaks from. Make no mistake, Norm is insanely bright. Norm went to college at 15(iirc) for mathematics but dropped out. While he was young doing stand up he fought cancer, so it loomed over his adult life. He was essentially a recluse when not on tour and gambled constantly. Very few people actually knew him well. Fascinating guy.

loving the Norm reactions, he has to be one of the most unique comedians that when people who aren't familiar with his comedy will often be confused why everyone else is laughing. Norm makes up almost everything on the spot. He likes to see how long he can draw something out without planning any of it. One of his jokes that sums him up perfectly is: "I'm not into fancy things. Nor am I into fancy smancy things. I'm not even into fancy smancy take a trip to Francy things. What I am into is wasting your time and mine."

The old chunk of coal would sometimes bomb onstage, on purpose and when people started leaving in droves, would end the show, rush to the door and shake everyone's hand on the way out, just to stretch out the awkwardness of it.

I recommend Norm's "12 Minute Joke". For me, it completely sums him up, and it keeps your laughter rolling along the whole time with a brilliant, well-composed pay-off. Norm was a trickster.

You must understand that part of the reason he does these long drawn-out jokes in this way is to cause you pain. He thinks it’s hilarious. And really it is. The punchline isn’t even the point of the joke. It’s the whole process.

Norm is an acquired taste. If you're fairly new to comedy, he may not appeal to you. If you've watched a bunch of comedians over the years, you'll probably be more receptive.

He sadly had to clean this joke up a little bit for TV. Originally he uses the f-word instead of gays, which makes the joke funnier because it not just makes the character stupid but also homophobic as well.
