That line from this song kept running through my head when a little boy that we had in foster care for over a year was taken away by the courts and returned to his birth family. Janis Joplin is iconic but this is undoubtedly the song she’ll be remembered for. And it was originally written by Kris Kristofferson! Janis totally took that song and made you think of the pain in her tortured soul. Janis is just an all time favorite of mine, she was a star even on Big Brother’s first record with her . She has also influenced so many artists over the decades.

Oh Paul, my heart hurts for you. I am so very sorry for your loses. I didn't think anything was worse than losing my parents, but you never expect to lose a spouse and especially not your own child. I lost my husband 12 years ago(49) and my son 9 years ago(31) It is unimaginable pain. He was my only child. My heart broke when Tears in Heaven came out and at that time I could not even imagine losing my child. I am truly so sorry for the loss of your precious little girl and your wife. Sending hugs.

@gotham61

When I was a young kid in the 70s I had a mix tape I had made, and on it American Pie was followed by Me And Bobby McGee. I listened to that tape a lot, so whenever I hear American Pie somewhere, I'm always waiting for Janis to come on after it ends. Amazingly, one day about 10 years ago I was driving while listening to a classic rock station, and they played American Pie, followed immediately by Me and Bobby McGee. I was so shocked I almost drove into a ditch. What are the chances of that??

Janis was a jewel...saw a documentary about her - she attended her high school reunion after she had hit the big time but was still nervous and afraid no one would want to talk to her or be seen with her because that's what they had done to her when she was a student. Another beautiful soul chewed up and spit out by the ugly side of the era in which she lived.

I really feel bad for her an have to wonder if her family, friends and even those she went to school with had treated her better and if she hadn't been so ostricised if maybe she would still be alive and he would have never gotten as deeply addicted to heroin as she did. Because honestly everything I've read and heard it really tore her down not feeling like she was loved and people calling her "ugly". Janis was FAR from it. Janis was and will always be beautiful to some of us both in appearance and her soul. RIP Janis

I believe Janis Joplin to be a perfect example of "give them their flowers before they're gone " If she had been appreciated And loved When she needed it the most, Perhaps she would have had the strength to love herself. Perhaps even still been with us. Please continue to pass on the love You're doing a great job!

Kris Kristofferson wrote a lot of songs that people assume were written by someone else. Sunday Morning Coming Down was made popular by Johnny Cash. For a long time I thought it was a Johnny Cash song - some of the best storytelling in a short tune.

This is one of those songs that has even more impact when you learn the backstory. Kris was ready to give up being a songwriter, and this is the song that turned his career around. The saddest part is, she never got to know how deeply she touched people. She died the day before the album was released. Kris had to make himself listen to it, because he knew he'd be hearing it on the radio and he had to be able to deal with what was to come.

She actually died the day before her last vocal was to be recorded which was the track Buried Alive In The Blues. It made it on the album but with no vocals. They were waiting at the studio for her to lay down the vocals but she had died the night before in her hotel room.

Some great Kristofferson lyrics and imagery in this song. "Feeling near as faded as my jeans" "with the windshield wipers slapping time" "freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose" "I'd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday" It is when Janis does the ending for this song, that she takes it from being a great rendition of a country classic, to becoming a Janis song.
