She may have been sitting forward in case he went up. Her leg was on him. At least she didn’t kiss the asphalt. I like how the other officers closed in around her to ride abreast. That sandwiched the horse in with his calmer buddies. Not guaranteed to work but a good behavioral plan in my opinion.

No horse is 100% bombproof. They are desensitised to many things but they are still flight animals and if something spooks them (it can litterely be a blade of grass facing the wrong way or a single leaf on the ground) they will react without thinking. She did extremely well to bring the horse back under control and settle him down.

She did a good job of alternating her signals so that the horse didn't have the ability to remain scared. She was forward and kept her core low so that they wouldn't flip, and she kept his head in, down, and balanced. Horses head up and they're on adrenaline and that's bad - that's what causes rearing and bolting, etc. You want the head down and in because then they are on endorphins (which are calming as you know). No matter how much desensitizing, there's always something that can happen!

The horse wasn't being half as reactive as it could have been. She didn't have to do too much other than realise that things were not going to escalate worse. True , experience and intuition , which she had , take time to master and she did. Of much more importance is the mental and emotional state of all 'work' animals which we all should be focussing on - not the humans who force the animals into these situations

I noticed that when the horse was backing up her body position was forward, this encourages the horse to back up more. If she had leant back the weight shifts and encourages the horse to go forward. I'm sure she will have studied this film and realises where she could have gained control easier.

Look at a horse's ears not their tails. When they're pissed they pin their ears, when they're spooked their ears are at full attention. And when a horse starts backing up that fast you want to pull their head around to your knee and use your heels or riding crop to drive them forward. Hard to do in a tight crowded space like that so she did well to maintain b hervseat and move her mount on. I've ridden, trained and shown my whole life and I'm old!

I’ve had horses rear up on me , had them bolt on me , while I was in the saddle. Out in the paddocks or even when in the yard I’ll let them carry on a bit . It all depends on the situation and location, sometimes I’ve let them run and when they have enough and find that I’m still in the saddle they usually settle down, however in this instance with so many people around she did well to bring him under control. The last thing you want is a horse bolting into the Guardsmen and into the crowd, the last time I had a horse go wild me was while working on a cattle station in the Northern Territory. The horse tried buck me off mid canter then started bucking all over the shop as my mates said afterwards It was like watching a rodeo. Better to bring the head down than let it get above the bit and bolt. If the horse had managed to lift its head high, it would be able to ignore the bit and run. These police horses are well matched with the same few officers, the rider would have known the horse well. 😍

If there's one thing that ruffles my feathers its online horse experts 🙄 but it looks to me, in my unprofessional opinion 😉 that he was fixed on running backwards with the potential to either rear and possibly flip or run into the crowd. Id definitely be pulling the side rein to distract him from going backwards, and her actions clearly worked

@@milliesos She controlled him expertly. She kept his head down pulling down on the reins. Had she sat back in the saddle and lifted the reins he would have reared, she would have gone off and he would have bolted. These officers go through extensive training, she knew what she was doing. I loved when she gave him a comforting pat to his neck, a bond between officer and horse.

@@milliesos one thing that ruffles my feathers is online folk who come on here and don’t expect others to have a opinion, we all have different opinions, Just for the record I’m lucky enough to have two horses of my own, Ok I would never say I’m a expert, but I do know what I need to , generally a horse would never tend to run into big a crowd of people, no way not a big crowd like that ! It would be far to scary for the horse to do that,

If you watch that horse from the very start of video it is unsettled, tail whipping around as they walk across the gates from left to right and then reappear, still not happy. Lucky to stay on board and she did not use the whip!!

The hell she does well to stay on. That horse was brought to heel quickly and with authority. Superb horsemanship if I've ever seen it. Still I stand by my claim that in our modern world, horses belong in riding clubs and salami, not on public streets.

Wouldn’t you think, in the 21st century, they’d have electrified those heavy gates by now so that those poor buggers don’t have to use brute force to open and close them?? And yes, she handled her spooked mount admirably. He’s a tad big for her, her feet don’t even reach his under girth, which makes her skill all the more impressive. Well done.

@@arthour051 frothing isn’t natural period. Watch videos of wild horses. None are frothing, not even fighting stallions. Every horse seen here is frothing and worrying their bits. The cause is pain from very harsh bits, no rein given & heavy hands.

Looks like all royal grey horses are in bred. Not the first time I’ve seen spooky behavior at the palace. Rider should have tilted her weight on the rear( the-brakes ).when it ran backwards , and got her lower legs off going forwards. Might have been helpful if another rider moved alongside to reassure stressed horse.
