One thing you must always remember about Lady Gyokuyou is that she's an absolute goblin when it comes to trolling Jinshi. She loves doing it!
@HaibaneRakka571Ай бұрын
Lady Gyokuyou is legitimately wife material ngl. She keeps a tight group of staff who are full of kindness, she's hilariously mischievous, she evaluates situations with wisdom and due thought, and she's smart as hell. I like Lihua a lot too, but Gyokuyou would be a very wise Empress if she ever got married to the Emperor

I mean, she does share the VA with Frieren. xD (and Anya, but I don´t think they´ve seen that one yet.)
@Chiyo-r6dАй бұрын
She's smart and then stuck in the rear palace so she's bored. Teasing Jinshi is her new form of entertainment.

as long as you have surfaces, where fingers tend to leave marks, you got to know at least that much. knowing that every human has entirely uniqe fingerprints is another thing. but obviously they didn't go that far
@originaldcjensenАй бұрын
The author originally said that the time period was around the 900’s, but she had to adjust. Opinion seems to be that it's more like late Ming dynasty, in the 1500’s. Mostly due to references to things like western medicine and locations in the americas. (Cacao, tobacco) Or you can just hand-wave it all as an alternate Earth/timeline.

I just kinda assumed it was an alternate reality where China had discovered America (which some people theorize might've actually been the case)

I'm surprised at how shocked you were about the young servant girl in the brothel. We've seen flashbacks of Maomao the same age (if not younger) hanging out at the Verdigris House. Pretty sure Maomao herself was a servant girl there before eventually being her dad's assistant at his apothecary.

According to the internet, though extensive use of fingerprints in forensics wasn't developed til the 1800s, knowledge of fingerprints being left on surfaces was known in China as long ago as 200 BC
@wow_horac4663Ай бұрын
The US Office of Justice Programs (www.ojp.gov) says that fingerprints were used as a means of identification as early as 300 BC in China, in around 702 AD in Japan, and since 1902 in the US.

I love how this show handles "adult themes". It has no qualms writing a character getting dragged into a brothel without making it seem weird or gross, the concubines are all powerful and wise, the Verdigris House is actually a prestigious establishment, there's basically NO fanservice (I like ecchi but this is nice too), and they treat matters of drug and disease in red light districts very seriously. You could make a live action of this right now and it would adapt perfectly Regarding Maomao's disappearance, I haven't read the source material but I think she was able to write home after becoming a lady in waiting. The head mistress of Gyokuyous palace seems very accommodating of Maomao's situation, I can't imagine her or Gyokuyou denying any of their staff to communicate with their families

Very good point

Yeah, by then she was able to write home, if not before.
@HaibaneRakka571Ай бұрын
She was pretending to be illiterate before, so she probably didn't write home until Jinshi discovered her

@@HaibaneRakka571 well ya paper and such is expensive and someone might just steal it, also consorts at a good/nice brothel were expensive like the dude said viewing the flower's or top girl's just dance would normally take a year's salary

If they had glass or polished metal, they knew about fingers leaving marks.

This is definitely a story that builds upon itself as it goes on. Even with slower episodes, it shows character development. The topics it touches are in parts so damn dark and intense, and (imo) they handle it really well, without making it too heavy but also don't make it weird with comedy or something. It's one of the things I love about it!

As far as the future of the narrative, there are several story-lines being woven through these episodes. Some will intersect and some will not. Every story-line has an impactful payoff in this show.
