I remember in beauty school doing one of my practical exams on a Japanese woman for a PF, her hair took so long to lift. It was insane. I was on crunch time, I convinced her to lift to an orange and I gave her some nice chocolate copper lowlights lol but Japanese people have strong ass hair.
@Iflie2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's the strongest hair so obviously any straightener from there is probably too strong for many other people. I remember from highschool that the asian straight hair is very round, while curly hair is kind of flat with scutes sticking out. Mine will cling together like velcro without product, I can never use heat as my hair turns top straw even just from a blowdryer.

I wish Crystal went into more detail about why the Japanese straightening treatment was worse for the client’s hair other than “its not made for us”. The damage on the first client looks no different than the typical damage you would see on anyone who is transitioning from a relaxer and trying to manage two completely different textures on one head. Honestly, I was impressed with how little damage there was given just how long her natural hair was. She was transitioning for a whole year, so the fact that all of that old straitened hair hasn’t all snapped off is way more impressive to me. Especially juxtaposed to the second client whose hair was fully relaxed and there were clearly chunks of uneven hair INCHES shorter than the rest. (This is in no way meant to shame client 2 in anyway! It’s not my place to judge any woman on the way she takes care of her hair. I don’t know her life and what she’s going through on a daily basis.) I’m only concerned from an educational perspective to learn why Crystal emphasized so much against the Japanese treatment, but had no problem doing a relaxer on hair that was so much more damaged. What is it specifically about the Japanese straightener versus any other straightener, and particularly why is a relaxer okay? I just don’t see how you can boil it down to “its not made for us” then go on to use a product that WAS made for us, but is clearly doing just as much (arguably even more) damage to that specific client’s hair. At the end of the day, all human hair on a molecular level is made out of the same keratin and disulfide bonds, the only difference is structural. All of these chemical straighteners and perms do the same thing. They break down the chemicals bonds of the hair shaft, the stylist then shapes the hair into whatever shape you desire, and then the chemicals reform the bonds again. There are many videos of black girls living in Japan getting these done, and making it work long term because that is all they have access to, so to attribute the issues the first client had to the fact that the treatment “wasn’t made for us” when there are a number of factors that could have contributed to damage she experienced feels irresponsible. It’s not just that “Japanese hair is more course than our hair”. I pray that you all know better than to generalize and entire population of people into one stereotype. These treatments were literally made for Japanese people with finer, curlier type 3 hair to get the straight look. It’s one thing to encourage the use of black-owned products and businesses to support the success of the community (we can all get behind that), but its a whole nother thing to say was can’t use certain products because “they weren’t made for us” with no explanation as to why that maybe the case. Its language like this that made me and the other little girls around me growing up think that we would never be able to have long healthy hair because we couldn’t afford the products that “were made for us”. Language like this limits our options as black women, and it doesn’t just stop at hair, but I’m not gonna get into that; this comment is already way too long. At the end of the day, whether you’re relaxed or natural, whether you’re using Suave, TGIN, or you’re buying products from the Asian market down the street because thats all you have access to, our hair is stronger than you think, and I guarantee, as long as you keep your hair moisturized, you are gentle with it, you manipulate it as little as possible, and you protect it while you sleep, you can make any product work.

I’m a stylist and I do Japanese thermal reconditioning every single day. That is all I do . If it is done properly it’s an amazing process and hair is often healthier if retouches are done in timely manner and client properly takes care of hair. I have clients that couldn’t get hair past their shoulders and now have waist length hair. BUT…. You are absolutely correct this hair type is not ideal for this process. I discourage all clients that come to me with this hair type from doing Japanese for this reason . It will break eventually, curl is strong , hair is weak and the two textures tangle . There are new options on the market that are also permanent but much more gentle .

When I started to introduce myself to black people hair I cuestioned that same, because I come from a place where women get perm and that's a very different procedure. Also, because here people naturally don't have that type of curl that often, there fore, people go to get a curly perm treatment to change their waves or lines.
@roobear99352 жыл бұрын
Relaxers straighten the hair and perms add curls/waves. Though some still consider getting a perm, as straighten the hair. It's all good. Depending on the coarseness of the hair and the strength of the curl, perm solution can be used to straighten hair but is not as strong as other chemical relaxers.

I love how well educated you are in hair care. I don't see to many hair stylist that is knowledgeable. They just do hair. You are a lady with ambition and drive to be successful. Q&A: I am a lady that is starting to go into menopause and take certain kinds of medications. I have been noticing that my hair has been hard and dry but yet thinning out in some areas. I know that menopause can put a stress on a person but do you recommend any OTC products that can help me bring back some lust and shine to my hair? Thank you very much. It will be greatly appreciated.

She's said in the past that she's not a doctor or pharmacist so she won't give out medical advice. She's says she's knowledgeable about hair, but not medicine and doesn't want to recommend something that she doesn't understand that well. I hope you find some things that work for you.

I take 2 medications...I wait 2 hours or so after taking the medication to take my vitamins and minerals(magnesium,Nutrafol, B-complex,liquid B-12,vitamin D)I started using henna and indigo (Hennasooq brand)instead of color since I still relax my hair,(you know,pick a chemical) I chose to stay "mildly" relaxed and I also use ayurvedic powders (amla,fenugreek,aloe vera) to name a few.. using henna/indigo is a long process though but worth it to me and I have seen significant progress in the health of my hair...the beautician noticed how thick my hair is and how she's sees some length! She's been taking pictures of my hair...

I have had a bad straightener before and had to go to the salon and cut off the bad parts every two weeks. After all the bad parts were cut I got a relaxer and have been relaxed for twenty years. My hair is still thick and healthy. I go to the salon and either get Affirm or Mizanni. Straighten out natural hair every week is bad. My mom only straighten our natural hair every three weeks when we were younger.

I tried telling some of my relatives who went natural(I chose to keep using a "mild" relaxer) about what you said about how some of these straightening methods damage hair OVER TIME..but they'd rather focus on the fact that I STILL get my hair relaxed!

I’m glad she said one is not healthier than the other it’s all how you take care of it cause natural people swear being natural is healthier when it doesn’t make a difference. I know plenty of people with relaxed hair and hair is healthy and long. I’ve had long hair naturally and I’ve had long hair relaxed❤

Hey Crystal! What are your thoughts on the study regarding relaxer use (4 times a year or more) is said to lead to cancer? Or increase cancer chances by 50%?! If you already talked about it no worries. I know it be a lot to comment back on it so maybe you can discuss on a video or live! I love this channel!!! Thank you! ❤❤❤
@annnee6818 Жыл бұрын
I have not seen the study, just this much on all studies: one study on its own doesn't say much, if it's a low quality study, even less so. Also, you must account for base rate. If 1 out of a thousand people get cancer without relaxing an increase of fifty percent means 1.5 people in one thousand would get it. It's of course possible there's a connection, but I would try not to panic just yet. Hope you're well, have a nice day!

Viewing a lot of the videos on various channels, I never knew so many black women had such beautiful, thick, long hair. Just looking as I walk in stores, restaurants and other places, all I would see was lace front wigs with the fake part, extensions or very short hair. It is so refreshing to see sisters with this gorgeous hair growing out of the scalp.

OOO my gosh I thought you were in New York. I transitioned by cutting off my relaxed hair back in 2008 and I flat iron once a week and didn't have hair loss or anything like that( it wasn't bone straight and I have 4a high-density low-porosity hair). I ended up with heat-trained hair and always felt that was a better way than a relaxer( didn't have breakage on anything). I ended up cutting it off in 2011 because I wanted to wear my natural kinks and curls. Now, I straighten my hair once a month during the winter months. That lady who is transitioning and flat ironing her hair all time probably shouldn't continue- it seems that she wants her hair to be straight all the time. The best thing for natural hair is a deep conditioner with heat at every wash. And water and grease which keep my hair nice.

Is the "Japanese straightener" less damaging than a classic relaxer process? I would think so judging from the hair quality of Client #1 and Client #2.
