Yeah I feel like my hair isn’t meant to be straight so I just don’t even do it anymore. I have very thick full long natural hair and I just love the way it behaves when I do twist and braid outs. It works for me and it stays healthier with no heat ever!!
@tiahnarodriguez3809

I have the same type of hair, and the key is to use high heat which unfortunately is more damaging. I’m not a fan of heat, so I’m with you on the twists. I prefer single strand twists because they give me a flatter root. When I straighten my hair for my bi-annual trims, I use medium heat and it gives me a blown out look which I’m fine with cuz like I said high heat is not my friend.

The issue is that most products for afro texturd hair has protein in it and I believe is the reason we are having so many set backs with our hair. I feel like it should be treated like iron, only purchase it if you need it and never be added to any product. My hair went from being very moisturized with define curls and waves to dry, brittle and hardly no curls. My hair doesnt like aloe or water anymore, if I use that my hair would frizz up and become dry and crunchy like I had used a protein treatment.

How does coconut oil make hair brittle? I've never heard of an oil doing that. The protein overload I can see, but not the oil, but you are correct. I found this online: "But for low porosity hair, it's hard enough to get water into the strands, so if you have coconut oil taking up space, then hair may not get the moisture that it needs, therefore, it dries out."
@rqhstlouis
@rqhstlouis Жыл бұрын
Idk the science behind it, behind my hair also hates coconut oil. It might be simply because oil and water don’t mix and too much coconut oil blocks the hair from getting moisture in.

I know what you mean! I am much more knowledgeable and careful now. So I check the ingredient list of every single product I buy. I’ve finally found some protein-free products. Most times I make products myself because of all the protein in store-bought products. Luckily I enjoy making DIY products, as long as they are backed by science & they work. 😂 Anyway, her hair turned out absolutely gorgeous! I love it. 😍

Analytical chemist here--Protein overload is not necessarily a bad thing. With overload, simply braid up hair and leave it alone for a week or more. Wrap up in scarf all week for extra added protection from the elements. Since hair is brittle, it is extremely fragile and can snap (without even stretching). Take down hair and hair should be super soft. This is because hair immediately absorbs protein and it won’t stop until you remove the excess product. Even the residual effects will continue until there is nothing left to absorb. Many store brought products have synthetic protein molecules that are strong. Hair cholesterol/hair mayonnaise are formulated to be gentle for Black hair/African origin. Her hair is beautiful and shiny due to all that protein she absorbed and the heat sealing it into her hair. That is why, despite the overload, her hair looks so amazing, strong, and shiny. Protein is amazing and your hair is made up of it. You constantly need to replenish your hair strands with protein for maximum hair health. I am not a cosmetic chemist but I work closely with the cosmetics lab. I am an analytical chemist that analyzed medications and topicals. Many principles pivot to hair/skin products. Lab formulations and analyzing active ingredients is not only what I have researched for many years , but do for a living. There are wonderful protein products that one can buy that are gentle enough for everyday use, cater to our hair type, and they are still strengthening. Of course, with any protein treatment, follow up with an equally strong Moisturizing treatment.

@Shell Grow. Do you have a deep conditioner that doesn’t have Shea butter in it?? I’m sooo allergic to Shea butter.

Her hair is beautiful.. but it's obvious her curl pattern has been affected by the heat. My sisters hair is longer than this young ladies and her usual springy natural hair did this from heat straightening.

Such a great video thank you! Question: how do you remove the protein making your hair brittle?
@shelltalkshair

You can balance it with moisture/protein balanced products and staying away from protein treatments for a while.

@@shelltalkshair thank you sm!! I washed my hair last night and took the advice from the video and it feels way more moisturized! I think my aphogee products helped the balanced moisturizer with a light oil 😮‍💨😭
