I personally think you started with a banger in “The Pleasure Principle,” but the whole Rhythm Nation 1814 album is fire, and extremely iconic. I am shocked it was never nominated for Album of the Year or Record of the Year or any of the big Grammys. It overwhelmingly addresses themes of social injustice and when it came out in 1990 or 91 (I forget exactly but I was in junior high), it was criticized for being too radical, or what we’d call today “woke.” Even though social justice was a common theme right around that time period with the AIDS epidemic, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the dissolution of the Soviet Union-if you remember “Winds of Change” by The Scorpions-and so many more things I can’t even remember, lot of people weren’t ready. Older Gen X was just starting to lean into and influence change, but Boomers and the Silent Generation were still in charge.
@muc4052 жыл бұрын
You know, MJ was a Boomer born in 1958 and Janet is what you call "older" Gen X. I don't think you can paint either generation with such a broad brush as if being a Boomer or Gen X is part of some monolithic group that thinks the same, acts the same, or doesn't understand social justice....back then OR now. That stereotype is beyond tiresome.
@docmoondog2 жыл бұрын
There was some major double standards at work though. White males were applauded for their "woke" leanings at the same time. This was the era that saw REM addressing social issues. Bono, Midnight Oil, Bruce Springsteen, even Janet's own brother were making music that championed environmentalism, animal rights, anti-war, anti-consumerism. Yet a black female acting self-empowered and taking a stand was too much? Generation X, or at least those of us smart enough to recognize hypocrisy, saw how ridiculous it all was.
@SymphonicEllen2 жыл бұрын
@@muc405 social justice then involved a lot of people that actually wanted to help. Today's social justice has a lot of bad ideology. For one, I highly doubt Janet thinks she's oppressed. There was probably no bigger solo female artist in the early 90s than Janet. Her breakout hit (from 1986) was "What Have You Done For Me Lately". The album that came from, "Control", sold MILLIONS of copies. "Nasty", "When I Think of You", "Control", "Let's Wait Awhile", and "The Pleasure Principle" (which you did a few months ago) were also on that album. Paula Abdul, a great friend of Janet's also helped choreograph some of her dance moves (and even appeared in the video for "Nasty"). She didn't slow down at all with "Rhythm Nation" - check out "Miss You Much", "Escapade", "Alright", "Come Back to Me", "Black Cat", and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)". All are bangers. That's like a career's worth of Top 10 hits off just TWO ALBUMS!

Janet Jackson is seriously the equivalent of the female version of Michael Jackson. But I actually feel that in some ways she is an even better dancer that Michael, because although he had a very unique one of a kind way of dance style... his were very much the same throughout his career. His signature moves were the same moves in most of his videos and performances. Whereas Janet had a very different unique style from one video or performance to the next...always evolving and changing. I went to her concerts several times including her best which was the Rhythm Nation concert and it was incredible. You guys should do BLACK CAT and IF next if you would like to see another side of her musical style that I know you will like.

I disagree. Michael’s dance style evolved over time and he introduced moves to audiences who had never seen the robot, or moonwalking. Frankly, I thought Janet copied a lot of Michael’s moves but it could just be that they used the same choreographers.

@TaLjA HeartZy As I said...I feel that in many ways she was a better dancer. You are free to feel what ever YOU want. I feel he had memorable but limited dance moves as he did the same moves in almost every performance. He moves were always changing and evolving which was my preference.

If y'all have not seen Scream, the song Janet recorded WITH Michael, you really need to check it out. It's a real mind bender!

You should have started Janet with control that's where she popped off and everyone took notice she was already fire when this came out this just took her to the other level

I Love me some Janet, Miss Jackson if ya nasty! I grew up listening to her and the Jackson family. I was even in the Micheal Jackson fan club. I'm not sure if you checked out Janet's music video "Alright feat. Cab Calloway but, I believe you would love it!

I get your feelings here - I had the unbelievable luck to be at her first-ever concert in Miami, opening night of the World Tour for this album - on the floor, 4th row center - the dancing was just amazing - my buddy worshipped her as he was an aspiring dancer and knew EVERY move she made. In fact, during Escapade, which you need to do a review on - he was matching her step for step, and she pointed directly at him and clapped. It was surreal. Wonderful show, true talent, fantastic night I will NEVER forget. Alright was another great song from this Rhythm Nation album - Miss You Much, I think there was something like 7 Top 10 hits (or 8?) from this one album.

Janet Jackson is always on point. Dive into the Rhythm Nation album. So many hits. The Rhythm Nation music video and Janet’s militaristic uniform have been preserved by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Library of Congress announced in 2021 that it had selected the album for preservation in the National Recording Registry (Class of 2020,) deeming it "culturally, historically, or artistically significant."

I use to get so upset when ppl would ask her what it was like being Michaels little sister. Yes, MJ was great but.....Janet is just as good if not better than MJ. She has a God given talent too. My opinion Janet has always been AMAZING

I think she based a lot of herself on Michael, the way she dressed and the style of dance was very similar to his. She was great, but I think she wasn't that different to Michael

This song, as well as most of the other hits by Janet Jackson, was written by the great Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The songs they've written and the artists they've worked with are too many to mention, but here's a few you really should react to: If It Isn't Love (New Edition), Human (The Human League), Tender Love (Force M.D.'s), Sensitivity (Ralph Tresvant), and On Bended Knee (Boys II Men).

Don’t forget The Time. Gotta react to Cool, Get It Up, The Walk, 777-9311, etc…
@ronnix232 жыл бұрын
@@johnseverson6604 I didn't include them because Prince wrote most of their songs, but they should absolutely listen to The Time especially since they've been getting into some funk lately.

Love the commentary on Janet's voice for once and the recognition of what she is able to do despite her limitations, her voice definitely has sweet quality.

I'm 65 and have loved Janet since my girls introduced me to her. She is Michael's equal with her talent. In my opinion. My girls are older than y'all for sure. My oldest just turned 40. In July my other two will be. 39 and 36. I took my baby sisters to their first concert and it was the Jackson Five. Great memories of all Jackson's who performed since I was a teen.

Not to mention, she's an incredible actress too. I first saw her on Good Times, as Penny. Also, just for fun - check out Joseph Gordon Levitt doing this on Lip Sync Battle

I'm so glad you guys did this song. I know it's easy to get caught up in the dancing which is FIRE. I'm surprised Jay didn't pick up on the lyrics of this one. This song is really what you guys are all about. Janet Jackson was one of those artists you were always waiting with great anticipation for the next single or album to drop and you immediately went and got it. Like you guys said, FIRE.

Great song from an awesome album 🥰! "Miss You Much", "Alright" (music video introduced my generation to past great performers: Cab Calloway, Cyd Charisse, and the Nicholas Brothers), "Black Cat", also are amazing songs. Ps - I saw her in concert during the tour back then. Electrifying seeing her live! Still have my tour t-shirt that has a picture of her wearing the awesome outfit from this video 😎
