Since he was married and had a daughter, the man only created his “ideal woman” as a sort of hobby. He pretty much treated her as a toy as symbolized by all the other toys in his workshop. But when she starts expressing emotions he did not intend for her to have he destroys her instantly. From that moment on he lives out the rest of his life regretting how he did not treat her as a living being. More than just a robot or toy: something he put his soul into. It’s like at the end of the short he finally dies and his soul is reunited with him in the form of his creation he put it into.

For those of who have always been feeling the same way as I did about 'Presence', this segment of the movie is very emotionally distressing and has stood out for me all these decades... The segment is just way too short to satisfy the audience's curiosity, and leaves ALOT of questions unanswered. If only I can become an animator some day, I swear that I will rewrite and remake an entire OVA based on this segment. Using the BEST influences from renown film-makers such as Michael Cimino and Wai Ka-Fai, I would tell the whole entire story (in painstaking detail) of how the creator finally ACCEPTS his female android's wish for love and affection. It would tell how they stay together and support each other both physically and emotionally, all the way until the very final end (with a surprise ending). That is something that even real-life couples cannot possibly do, especially in this sad and corrupted modern age gone MAD. Wish me luck, everyone! 😞

Not only does this look great for all its technical limitations, but how original and creative is this compared to so many anime shows today? Not just the subject matter and how it's being approached but also the whole style, the choice of shots all the way to the little gadgets in the background. Why don't we get something original like this any more?
@enigmaarcs8559 Жыл бұрын
Because all the "generic" or "bad" anime that aired at that time get lost to time. So the only animr that survives to this day are the one with "stellar" animation. 2nd, this is aired when Japan undergoes economic boom. The law and bussiness to make an OVA animation is vastly different than it is now. It's nearly impossible to make a huge profit to make an anime with "stellar" drawing. Heck, this particular OVA is not "popular" and niche when it's aired. But of course there is still great anime in recent year like Mob Psycho 100, Heavenly Restriction and Sonny Boy just to name a few. You just don't look hard enough and proceed to say all recent anime are bland.
@schwindsichtigaderechte5293 Жыл бұрын
@@enigmaarcs8559 It's a bit pompous to say I don't look hard enough, you don't know me. I've seen Mob (and liked it just fine), I've seen Jujutsu Kaisen (which I guess you mean by Heavenly Restriction?) and found it ok, I purposely avoided Sonny Boy because it looks bland, but I might give it a shot. The ones I really liked in recent years were Vinland Saga, One Punch Man and Re: Zero. They were kinda different, but that's not what I mean. They're still safe. I agree with your argument why studios go that safe route nowadays, I just wish there was more variation and that studios would take risks more often.

This part of Robot Carnival is very special. The theme for "Presence" (the name of the short) is beautifully haunting and captivating. Lots of themes going on in this short: the inventor's own humanity vs how the android was more human than him, how he was scared of the love that was shown to him and regretted the love lost years later over "the one that got away," and forbidden love. I saw this for the first time four years ago, and this short still stays with me.

Robot Carnival was a collection of shorts that showed the relationship between humans and robots in the future. And those relationships weren't always good. This was a short where the man built a android to fill what was lacking in his life. But he started to get emotionally attached, and destroyed her because it wasn't "right" to love a robot/android in his mind, so he lashed out from fear of getting emotionally attached to something that wasn't human. It kind of touches on forbidden romances. It was also made in the 80s, when people were resentful towards robots in general for eliminating jobs during that era and they weren't sure if robots were a good or bad thing going into the future.
