It really warms my heart to see a reaction where there's actually concern for the lives of the nameless common people. A good number of fans were cheering Daenerys on as they watched her rain fire on the innocent to make her way to the enemy. They couldn't get her out of their mind as the hero of the story and justified her actions instantly. We live side by side with some very messed up, childish people. The real challenge is being able to shed tears for even Cersei. And you passed that test as well.

Daenerys did care about the people at one point, but her lust for power and her conga line of trauma (losing Jorah, Rhaegal and Missandei in rapid succession) eroded her compassion. She was also lashing out. She was abused by Viserys most of her life, lost her baby, lost Drogo, lost Barristan, Jorah, Missandei and two dragons whom she loved like her children. She was complete blind rage. Ultimately, one can argue she became the most evil character in the show. However, she wasn't just burning Kings Landing because of Missandei. The real tragedy of her character is she became exactly what she was fighting against.

It's not about love for Jon, it's just in his nature to do the right thing and be honourable. He's exactly like Ned Stark in that regard. Him and Tyrion are both trying to help calm Daenyrys while also obliging by her decisions. Plus he doesn't want to rule. And Dany has worked so hard for the throne, for it to be taken away from her by someone she loved would be devastating.

It’s so interesting to see the reaction of binge watchers vs the real time watchers. The binge watchers seem to more easily see the Daenerys foreshadowing. My group had a couple of people that called the mad queen turn as early as season 3 while most defended her to the end. The binge watchers also don’t get nearly as angry at the ending. They agree it’s too rushed and needs to be more fleshed out but none of the rage. I hope you enjoyed the series; I’ve rarely been so emotionally invested in a series. If you ever want to deep dive there are some crazy but fun theories out there. Mermen, The Great Northern conspiracy, jaqen h'ghar is syrio forel, the list goes on and on.

I'm so glad with the way you reacted to Cersei's death. It not being satisfactory was precisely the point and very much on par with George R.R. Martin's writing who has said in the past that he hopes to make his readers feel various emotions in regards to the conclusion of his villains' arcs. And Cersei is the most relevant human villain in the story. Also, Lena Headey really is so incredibly talented, no other actor in the series would have pulled off portraying a nasty character such as Cersei for 8 seasons and still manage to make the audience sad about her demise.

Honestly the show does more to flesh out Dany’s trauma history but it’s easy to look at Cersei as someone shaped by trauma too. Lost her beloved mother during her youngest sibling’s birth. Her father is cold and distant. Her twin is a golden boy. Her youngest sibling who, while the scapegoat, gets the attention from her dad she so desperately craves. Her husband is obsessed with a dead woman and doesn’t love her. She has interest in power and politics but due to her gender is regularly overlooked most of her life until she starts using malicious practices to claim it for herself. She can’t seem to get out of her own way. She ends up alienating all the people close to her. All of her plans seem to backfire. Honestly, Cersei got a little flanderized at the end of the series (as did most characters) but she is the character who reminds me of people from my own life due to how her ego trips her up.

Daenarys problem is she lived in a black and white world. She conquered entire regions that had their own (admittedly foul) customs such as slavery etc and came in and abolished them with no thought on what to do next. She did not negotiate; she chose violence at every turn even when alternate options presented themselves, she would burn people alive in foreign countries if they refused to bend the knee, and would have more than likely turned on the North following the events of the season finale if she had the chance. Sure, her ideology isn't necessarily bad; free the people, abolish slavery sounds great on paper. But damn, her methods leave a lot to be desired

Maybe because they didn't build up her going all genocidal good enough and ended the Night King's story in ep3 and then forced this in 3eps. It is called natural storytelling. It would have fit better if this entire season would have been all about fighting the Night King and THEN an entire season about Dany's decline. It is the pacing that is my big gripe and that the Broken Queen storyline didn't get the attention it needed!

@@DarthKay093 No I agree that the writing was super lazy this last season, but there have been signs literally the entire show that she would go this route. I’ve read the books several times also and in my opinion GRRM makes it even more obvious. I don’t think we will ever see A Dream of Spring, but I’m still optimistic we’ll get the Winds of Winter in the next couple years and be able to see Dany’s darker journey done justice. I just simply do not understand those who justify all of Daenerys’ actions and words in these final few episodes. Danny is such a psycho. She brutally murdered tons of innocent people then turned into full on Hitler and vowed to “free the rest of the world like she just freed the people of Kings Landing.” referring to her killing all the men women and children of Kings Landing that had absolutely nothing to do with her not Cersei’s egos. People literally call Jon a monster for killing Daenerys. But he was just like a veterinarian putting an animal out of its misery when it becomes irreversibly sick and aggressive. This episode in particular made me absolutely sick and hated what they did!

I feel there is an important distinction to draw: the more reasoned criticism of D&D is less for Dany's turn to Mad Queen itself and more in the execution and build-up preceding it. You can see for yourself how they hit the accelerator once they reached Season 7. This was a show that (originally) prioritized character development and nuance above all else. George R R Martin himself envisaged the show going past 10 seasons. Putting that aside, at the very least - imagine S7 and S8 fully fleshed out at 10 episodes-a-piece; the conversation around the final season may have been completely different. To put it simply: it didn't feel earned. Loved your reactions to GoT guys. :)

They said they lost half their forces. And she meant the building of the Red Keep has never fallen.

Cercei was cold and ruthless, Dany was emotional and snapped when things went south. Both did extremely shitty stuff, and both killed lots of innocent people. Gotta give you both credit for seeing what Dany was going to do when most reactors didn't pick up on the clues through the seasons. She was so single-minded in sitting on the throne even though it was not merit but entitlement/nepotism. The scenes from the last two episodes were flashed in Bran's visions, and people kept trying to convince her not to be her father, and rule with fire and blood. When a targaryian is born, the gods flip a coin. She reached her apex when she freed the slaves, she should have stayed in her lane instead of assuming people with no love for her family would suddenly support her claim. This shows Dany trying to fight against her rage instead of such a sharp change over the last two episodes (I predicted the mad queen end from about s6 I just wish they had longer to show it)
