I always felt that Faith and the Mayor's relationship is supposed to mirror Buffy and Giles'. At any rate, it's not romantic.

Yeah, but I can understand people being worried that it might be sexual/romantic because the subtext of Faith initially believing it might be was there and modern day viewers have a different context and understanding when it comes to "grooming" and certain portrayals of dynamics. But also of interest, Professor Walsh and Riley don't seem to ever get as much commentary when they are also comparable to Buffy/Giles and Faith/The Mayor.

Regarding the hospital scene, I always assumed that, when Faith walks out in the hall there are boxes and old equipment, that she was somehow moved to a room that was setup in the basement of the Sunnydale hospital and a plant working as a nurse, was sent to the hospital to keep an eye on her. As far as Faith and The Mayor in Buffy very rarely are villains monolithic. Sure, the duo are doing evil things back in S3, but The Mayor truly cares for Faith as a daughter and Faith, who desperately needed a parental figure, loves The Mayor in a paternal way. I think that's what makes the show so interesting. And Spike is a good example of this. He's a demon, he is evil and is only restrained by the chip, but from S2 we have seen that he is a vampire that has held onto more parts of his human personality more than most other vampires do, and that makes him a very interesting character.

I think because it was not expected that she'd ever wake up, she was moved down to the dump, just on basic life support.
@Buffy8Fan2 күн бұрын
I always loved how Faith didn't wake up until she dream self defeated dream Buffy. Faith and the Mayor was never romantic. The Mayor even chastised Faith for not understanding that. It was always a father/daughter relationship and Faith views Buffy as ruining that after the group didn't involve her and/or befriend her. When Faith was in a coma she was in police custudy with an undercover Watchers Council nurse keeping an eye on her.

Faith is in police custody; not the Watchers Council. If she were to ever awake, she'd face prosecution for the murders. But the Council stationed a nurse there to be their spy and keep an eye on her in case she woke up. THEN they'd deal with her if need be, as in the current situation where she escaped custody.

At many points throughout the series, I feel it's relatively easy to point out inconsistencies or implausibilities, but I always felt that the style of the hospital in which Faith woke up was primarily a stylistic choice. Indeed, it looked sombre, almost gothic, and certainly not realistic, but tonally speaking, I think that fit the mood of her regaining consciousness after such ominous dream sequences. It is an occult-themed show after all, and earlier seasons had a darker atmosphere, which I personally appreciate.

Welcome back! She said "five by five" at the end. It's always exciting when Faith makes an appearance. You guys should seriously react to Dollhouse, which has 2 seasons. It's also by Joss Whedon and it stars Eliza Dushku. Great series!

The problem is that once you know about Joss Whedon you see that attitude to women in his work. The torturing of strong women. And it gets to a stage where it's unpleasant to be watching someone else's fetish.

Not "5 for 5" - it's "5 by 5". Signal strength and signal clarity are loud and clear. After Faith killed the one guy and spiraled, she did kill other humans, such as the vulcanologist at the Mayor's orders, and the courier bringing the Box of Gavrok she killed on her own initiative.

Probably the first human Buffy killed was that guy from the order of Taraka. She sliced his throat with a skate blade. At least he didn't display any supernatural qualities (beyond being big and strong). Then there was Mrs. Post, the fake watcher - Buffy cut of her hand with a piece of glass, which directly led to her electrocution.

Buffy has killed a human. The first assassin from the Order of Taraka, hired by Spike in season 2, attempted to murder her while she was waiting for Angel to show up to the skating rink. She slit his throat with her skates. He was human.

@ she technically didn’t kill him. He ran towards him, she deflected and sort of rolled him over her as he attacked, and he ended up in the hyena habitat. I believe she tried to get him out, so the intention wasn’t there. I don’t even call it manslaughter because it was self defense.

Fun reaction. It’s hard to explain to the present viewers how we felt about Faith when Buffy aired. Since Buffy aired we have had dozens of female anti heroes and wrong side of the track kick ass girls in movies and shows.But for many of us it was first and foremost Faith. It was the combo of the writing and situations but most of all it is the charismatic personality of Elizha Dushka. I watched Buffy with 8 girls for most of the series and they each had a real love/ hate relationship with Faith. It’s folly to try and explain or justify. Just be grateful when Faith arrives… it will be a blast. Like an A Bomb and there is always fallout.

The start where they are making the bed and Faith says 'Little Sis Coming' it will all make sense just be patient. Even though I think S4 was not the best of Seasons overall, the stand out episodes and the comedy moments and one liners reached new levels. Faith's awakening dream scene a homage to 'Tim Robbins in Shawshank Redemption. Great writing again here. Soulless Spike still doing the best comedy ever. Great to see The Mayor in the video, a terrific ending to this episode setting up another great episode to follow. Very much a two parter with the even better next episode Who Are You.
