She's recovered now, but it took until I was an adult for change to happen. I hope she's able to recover so she can be with him during his most important years instead of only having a mother in name. And please understand that although she shouldn't be absolved of the crime of putting her child in danger, addiction completely changes you. I don't see why they didn't charge her with DUI. She was asleep behind the wheel in a car in a McDonald's drive-thru (so the engine was running or recently running). You can get charged for DUI for having a reaction to a drug that doesn't generally "drastically impair" people, like a pain pill if you're not overusing them. It makes no sense to simply not charge her with anything while being like that with a kid in the car with her. She didn't take a pill for a migraine or bad back that day (you swallow those) - she shot up before driving her kid to get something to eat.
