"Officials with the city of Barstow, California insisted this week that officers had acted properly when they used force to arrest a pregnant woman who refused to show them her identification, even though the charges were later dismissed.
In police body camera video obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California (ACLU SoCal), an officer is responding to an apparent traffic dispute between Charlena Michelle Cooks, who is 8 months pregnant and black, and an unidentified white woman.
The officer first talks to the white woman, who accuses Cooks of acting “all crazy.”
“I don’t see a crime that has been committed,” the officer admits after examining the woman’s car. After promising the woman a police report, the officer heads over to talk to Cooks."

So it's NOT illegal to slam an innocent pregnant woman to the ground? I'm confused. The lack of charges against the officers tells me it's legal to assault people for no apparent reason.

The cops says he doesn't believe any crime has been committed until he speaks to the black lady... and she sounds hostile and starts talking about "Oh because she's white" and admitting that she confronted the white lady. She is acting like someone who would do every single thing the white lady said she did. .. and simply asking her name not even asking for ID and she goes nuts says how much patience she has as a person. She's a total ass hole... and total ass holes turn regular people into total ass holes when dealing with them.

Tommy Payne I despise cops but in this situation the cops did nothing wrong. They didn't not disrespect her, threaten her, or anything that PIGs usually do to black people. She was the one that escalated the situation by refusing to cooperate while the cops investigates a situation she as implicated in. Then she actually tried to WALK AWAY from the cop. She is accused of attacking a woman in a SCHOOL parking lot. This is 100% the woman's fault and no amount of crying and begging after the fact will change that. And her pregnancy changes NOTHING. She obviously did not give a damn about her child while she struggled with police. As a black american it infuriates me when white liberals fucking take situations like this and claim it's racism when it is clearly the fault of the "victim". Trayvon Martin was a REAL Victim Mike Brown was a REAL Victim Eric Garner was a REAL Victim But this woman is only a victim of her own STUPIDITY.

The pig in question, should be fired for not knowing the law in the first place. He had no legal right to ask her for her name. For the cop nuthuggers out there, it's not her job to make the cop's life easier. If he can't take that interaction, he's emotionally weak, and shouldn't be a cop anyway. P.S. He should also be fired for being a liar, and/or not being able to tell time, seeing as how it was less than 2 minutes, before he put his hands on her.

They can arrest you and take you down to the station. Now they were ONLY able to do that because there is probably cause you maybe loitering. "They were aggressive". If a animal is abused and they become "aggressive" its okay because they were a victim. But when blacks have been continously victimized for 400+ years and want to protect the rights thier grandparents marched and died for they are wrong. Youre a hypocrite and closed minded. I pray you never have to go through a tenth of the struggle black people encounter in everyday life. You wouod never make it. The cop was an ass period. OMG, all cops are nowadays is just "I'm the big guy, you're nothing" I have no power it seems. I mean, just the other day a cop asked to look thru my phone (I'm a twin, my sisters phone was taken a while back cos of pedophile issues) and I kept refusing cos I know they have to have a warrant. And at the end, I finally gave it up. (I don't have anything bad, believe me or not) they deleted over 50 photos of me and my grandma (she died and those were the last photos taken) and deleted lots of other things then gave it back to me. I am beyond devastated and mad.

Let me just state that I'm 13 and white, before I say anything. What the police did was totally uncalled for. She didn't even have to legally give the police officer her name, and when she went to check if she did, the police officer said she had 2 minutes and then immediately forced her to the ground with her screaming "I'm pregnant". The white woman got off with a "Ok, I'll check this out," while the black pregnant woman got pushed to the ground and handcuffed, even though no damage was done and no evidence was provided. I'm not upset with either of the woman, I'm upset with the cop. When I watch the video, I don't see "A spoiled white h**" or "A re****ed black n*****", I see two woman road raging at each other, one calls the cops, and the other one gets arrested for no apparent reason. The only one I see at fault is the police officer, who appears to have arrested a woman based on her skin color. People need to stop looking at the white and black people with stereotypes and need to look at the bigger picture. When I get older I'm either going to be a teacher, a doctor, or a police officer. I'm gonna make a difference from all the fakes and high tiers that think they can do whatever they want.

Look, this black woman did not need to give her name. He should not have handled this in this manner. He arrested her because she didn't give her full name and felt like he was disrespected. But the fact is the woman was scared...and as an African American I can relate. She knew she was at a disadvantage. Moreover, as soon as she said she was pregnant the cop should have been more cautious. Given the situation, it was unlikely she was lying. This was handled incorrectly.

The thing that pisses me off more than anything else is that he asked the black woman for her information and not the white woman. He assumed who was the primary aggressor. That small assumption seems insignificant, but it's huge because it's what's leads to thousands of more black people having interactions with police that end like this. Imagine if he had talked to the black woman first, and went over and asked the white lady for her information. But a white woman in this country could steal a bike and broad daylight and people would help (that's a real video on KZbin)

Ladies and gentlemen as a black American woman who has never been arrested, never committed a crime outside of speeding (we all speed), has officers of the law in my family tree... this happens ALL THE TIME. It's heartbreaking, sad, scary and common. Because this is black in America. A country I love. But I don't love the hatred I feel and read all the time, every day. And they laid her in her stomach at 8 months pregnant. SMH

Blue Kogi So, what made you think that the white woman's story was the truth? All I saw was a she said/she said case, in which cops will usually tell you to file a police report of you so wish, and leave. What makes you think the black woman was in the wrong? Because she was irritated that thos bullshit was happening to her? What if it was the white woman who was irritated, and the black woman scared? And there is NO WAY IT IS ALRIGHT TO LIE A PREGNANT WOMAN ON HER STOMACH AT 8 MONTHS. I am 7 months pregnant right now, and I couldn't lie on my stomach from 4 months. THAT IS NOT OKAY NO MATTER WHAT. The black lady did nothing to warrant being handcuffed and arrested.

It is terrifying being a black woman in America when dealing with the police. This is from personal experience. I have a squeaky clean record, I do community service, I'm educated, and I am extremely polite (Sometimes to a fault lol. My parents were very intolerant of any disrespect). I have had some very distasteful exchanges with Atlanta police and Athens police. I have had officers take one look at me, and assumed the worst; just because I'm black. One cop who I called due to a minor fender bender actually hopped out of his police car and the first thing he asked me was whether he new me from anywhere, like from a prior case. Haha. While many other women get the the benefit of the doubt, protected by the halo effect, I, an upstanding citizen who helps her community, am often times treated like I'm a common criminal, subhuman, and an attitudinal ticking time bomb waiting to go off. Nice.

shannon Carlow... Honestly lady, it's refreshing for someone non-black to see our point of view... People who are white or look white do not experience these kinds of disrespectful actions (now there are a few that have but not many)... And they don't believe these events happen and love to say phrases like, "they always playing the race card", it's not always about race... The reality is, it's always about race in America... The fact that you can empathize with an alternative you point that you don't have to experience but we do that's the first step to eradicating racism just understanding what it's like to be in somebody else's shoes and take action against Injustice no matter what the color of the person is if we unify against Bad Cops then we could probably accomplish some things, so I appreciate your comment... Have a blessed day...

It's terrifying living in a state of constant fear of those who are supposed to protect & serve or even those who can play victim & make me or mine look like angry belligerent animals that should be forced to submit or die. ... This is America.

Reasonable suspicion.. that's all the police officer needs to ask for ID. She was obviously the accused of an altercation that occurred on school grounds in which she is reasonably suspected of committing a crime. She refused, and in her Juris Doctorate stupor got arrested.

I'll only say this: Bottom line is she is a pregnant woman and there was no reason that the cop had to bring her to the ground like that, she possessed no threat to ANYONE. He felt he could do that to HER because SHE is black. If it was a white woman we wouldn't be having this conversation. Is it so hard to be sensitive to those facts? Like I said I could go on and on but I'm feeling drained from all the excuses that some whites and other like minded people try to find to make this situation acceptable for a black non threatening pregnant woman.

I don't think that racism is at the core of the problem. The REAL problem is about respect. First the cops EXPECT to have more trouble with black people so they are more aggressive and far less polite when dealing with black people. The black people expect the cops to be aggressive and rude so they are less respectful. The cops become offended at being disrespected and things explode. There is only ONE solution to this problem. The cops need to be even more polite with black people.and they need to forgive any minor disrespect. To be honest the cops have lost the right to be respected by black people. They need to earn that respect back. It won't be easy and ALL cops are going to need to swallow their pride and just deal with it. Why are cops the ones responsible? First it's easier to train the cops to do this than it is to train the people they will be dealing with. But more important, it was the police who started things more than 100 years ago, especially in the South. The cops have never given black people the same respect as whites. There is a fantastic story related by Dr. King himself. When Martin Luther King Jr. was a child his father was stopped by the police for some infraction. The cop called his father "boy" as was all to common at the time. Martin Luther King Sr. told the cop he was NOT a boy, and he wished to be addressed as "Mr. (or Dr. I can't remember MLK Sr. had a doctorate) King". The cop APOLOGIZED and addressed the man properly. The rest of the encounter went smoothly. It would go a long way in aiding the police if they used "Sir/Madam", "Please", and "thank you" when dealing with black people. If the cop BEGINS an encounter (even if it's with a criminal suspect) with a gesture of respect they would be surprised at how much easier and more pleasant dealing with black people will be. It won't always work, and if it doesn't the cop needs to continue showing respect until the other person realizes THEY are being respected and returns the favor. Remember the black person EXPECTS the cop to be aggressive and rude. It may take some extra time for them to see the cop ISN'T being rude.

He could have said the following: "That is fine mam, feel free to check, but because an incident was reported and I am writing a up a document for that report I have the right to ask you your name to confirm if the individual in the incident was you. If you are the person the other lady reported I just want to have your side of the story for documentation purposes. +yung dada For incident reports that do not result in an arrest the police can ask your name. They do this so that the parties can be on record so that its easier to track events if something happens between the two individuals again. In her case because she was being blamed for something where no crime could be proven, asking her questions is the only way he could confirm if any incident occurred and if she was the one involved. You are right, she doesn't have to give her the information but, the cop is allowed to ask for his report. How he handled obtaining and how quickly he resorted to force is the problem here. He could have easily explained himself and she would have given him her name.
