There’s an all dance version of this video at the time, Janet always did two versions of her videos. Tina Landon her main choreographer did her music from 91-98 she worked with Janet as a dancer since control and rhythm nation. The breakdown was done by Omar Lopez, Janet’s dance partner in the video. Her dancers at the time were just as big as her. She always shared the spotlight and treated them well and gave them their light to shine. She’s one of a kind.

@@FindingMadonna every single that was on the Janet album had alternate versions. TTWLG has long and short form, and a one take version. IF had regular version and the dance version which is just the cherography & cut out most of the plot of the video. A few fun facts... 1. Janet sang 100% of the vocals on the track. 2. One thing I like telling people to do with this video is watch it twice. Once for Janet and the dancers. The second time for the plot. I always say to pay attention to everything that's NOT Janet the second time. Shit gets interesting.... 3. When she performs this live, lately she's been singing the low part. Hopefully you will react to the full album, specifically the 30th anniversary edition with the b-side tracks....

Such a legendary video! I remember when it premiered on VH1 and had EVERYBODY learning the breakdown! Tina Landon was her choreographer back then but I believe her along with Omar (Janet’s dance partner in the video) came up with the breakdown. The Janet albums amazing and a classic it was so fresh for her (The tour too) I never thought in a million years she could top it. Its worth listening from beginning to end as it flows. Much like its progressive sequel . What she did with The Velvet rope. I just really didnt believe at the time there could be an even better masterpiece after 'Janet' coming up. Yes its her as people use the phrase 'Ray of light'. (Its nothing like ray of light its a common phrase used for everyone). The velvet rope tour was recorded properly too so in the future youve got that to REALLY look forward to. Youre at an exciting point in Janets Journey. Cheers for the review, yup IF's fantastic.

this song more than any others from janet stands out for me as well. the song itself, the remixes (the brothers in rhythm remixes on the CD maxi just SLAPS) the VIDEO and the alchemy when it all came together. many friends and I memorised the entire choreography and even though i was in the nosebleeds, was doing it in my seat at the recent MSG concert in NYC =) tina landon is a LEGEND. aside: the faux rich man screaming into the monitor wanted to impress his girlfriend by buying his way into the club, asking a certain someone to come out to meet him (no specific reference in what he said, probably just his inflated ego speaking) and in the closing moments he also bragged: "don't you know who my uncle is?" very typical alphamale wannabe offspring from chinatown gangster family thinking he owns the town.

The Janet album definitely does have a quieter, sexier mood overall - it’s a babymaking album. But it’s also an opus with a crazy exploration of genres and styles. She and Jimmy and Terry clearly had a lot of time and a lot of money to pour into the project and it shows. It does suffer from more filler than her other best albums, but it’s a signature, defining statement piece for her as an artist, and I think it really shaped the way she made music moving forward. “If” really stands alone in her discography and videography though. There’s no other song I would compare it to - really by anyone!

In a video I saw somewhere on KZbin..her producer Jimmy Jam wanted Janet to sing in kind of a "Indian Chant" that's how you get the lower register of her voice and the video is set in a Asian type brothel/dating room ..but love your janet reactions and re-plays on your favorite parts..keep going down the Janet rabbit hole of music videos and maybe react to some of her live performances...like American idol 2009 live

Thank you, I really appreciate it. That low-register chant was brilliant - I love the contrast with that and the pre-chorus bit

Back with a couple fun facts that some commenters may have already said: 1. The beginning duh duh duh part that you talked about was actually a sample from a Supremes song in the 60s you would’ve never guessed. Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis have always been the MASTERS of sampling and repurposing and interpolating music to create new sounds! 2. They weren’t sure if Janet would be able to do that low register chant thing that she does, and she pulled it off flawlessly! 3. you really should find the video that talks about her background vocals. Absolute EARGASM! She has been credited as having the most intricate and beautifully sounding background of arguably any artist! In particular, with this song, when you hear the background vocals for the chorus, it’s insane how it even makes sense, but it does! Jimmy would always say to her, I know this probably doesn’t sound right now as you’re singing, but when we put it all together it will. And she always said I trust you! 4. And yes, PLEASE do a reaction video to the all dance version of this video!

One REALLY important thing I forgot to mention! If you don’t already have tickets to see Janet in the UK, you need to get them now as they are selling out fast! She hasn’t toured in the UK in 15 years, and there’s no telling when she’ll be back! If you like her this much and you are exploring her on this journey, I guarantee you will be mesmerized by her in concert! She doesn’t rely on a bunch of pyrotechnics and visual effects, in part because the Super Bowl incident really damaged her career, making it hard for her to get the budget to do what a lot of other artists do. But her performances live are like no other! she dances like she’s in her 20s and connects organically with the audience in a very personal way that makes you feel like you are the only person in the room!
