Danielle is just AWESOME!! Her analysis and insights are fresh and fantastic - you definitely should bring her on more often! I especially loved her very simple description of Craig’s outlook on his finale - “ Did my stint - Bonds not gonna live - he’s coming with me!!” And she was absolutely right that no actor should have that kind of influence on the direction of a movie franchise like that - they should just do their job! Like you said - we all love Craig but what makes him so different from all the other Bond actors that he was allowed to make such a giant decision - when Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan could not? Now i have seen it a few times at this point and the film itself has actually really grown on me - I love the story and the characters…. and I think it’s his best performance ever as James Bond… But I STILL hate that ending! (I bet the only person in that meeting you talked about that DID love the ending idea was Craig himself lol!) Your friends idea of DuDu on the table at the end was BRILLIANT btw! Great great video - whenever some extra Zaritskys visit The Bond Experience it’s always a special highlight!

I agree with your point, but Craig started of as a different kind of Bond, a Bond fit for the 21st century, so I think he earned the right to end it the way he wanted it and to me it felt like the right kind of conclusion for his Bond, who has always been a bit more brutal and tragic. Rami was a really weak villain though. I don't know, I really like NTTD but I totally get why people who love the older Bonds don't like it or Craig's Bond in general.
@johnrigs65403 жыл бұрын
@@mandyschmidt7960 I actually love Craig’s Bond! I think he has brought in emotion and depth that the character has never had before- not in any of the previous 24 films. So that was pretty groundbreaking! And although he played him very differently than every other actor who had come before him, I still completely recognized him as the character we’ve all loved throughout these many years. That’s why seeing him killed off was such a gut punch for all of us. And even though I did not agree at all on how they ended it, I still absolutely loved the film - and I think years from now, after we’ve had a few more “traditional” Bond movies, I think that we will all really probably admire the brave things they did in this Movie! Right off the bat I wanted to say that discovering your channel through Calvin's and watching all the great content you guys have made during the lead up (and eternal waiting process) to No Time To Die has been a highlight of a very sad and traumatic year for me! You are a charming personable gentleman whose content is consistently nuanced, intelligent and passionate! I've been familiarizing myself with your wonderful back catalogue of videos and you have now gained a new 'ride or die' fan sir! ❤👍🏽 I consider myself a 'die hard' Bond fan since seeing GoldenEye when I was 15 years old. I own every EON film, including the terrible ones. For most of my life I have immersed myself in every piece of 007 trivia and franchise minutia on screen and BTS. I preface with all that to say I am a huge outlier because I FREAKIN ADORED THIS FILM! lol No Time To Die accomplishes something I have been desperate to see in this franchise: the emotional growth/evolution of Bond as a character. The tiny amount of time we got to see James Bond as a father was heartfelt, bittersweet, and gave so much more credence to the idea that he and Madeline deeply love each other. I can count on 1 hand the amount of onscreen Bond relationships the films have tried to pass off as unique, love of his life romances, and most of those are a bust IMO. Really I only buy the importance of 3 relationships: Tracy, Vesper, and now Madeline. No Time To Die managed the impossible! Like you guys have alluded, Bond and Madeline in SPECTER had less chemistry than Denise Richards and that nuclear bomb in TWINE! jk Even with my enjoyment of NTTD I 100% understand how some feel slighted by how much of a departure from the 007 formula this is. Like you mention, every time that ending hits, no matter what, you get a sharp audible gasp from the audience, followed by stunned bittersweet silence! I haven't felt surprised by a Bond film on this level since watching (and retaining) OHMSS the very first time! That alone is a fete in itself, add to it a great film in top tier shape and No time To Die raises higher on my definitive rankings. Most of the time I rather my favorite franchises take a huge creative swing, if it fails (Quantum of Solace, sorry) it fails but if it doesn't it helps the franchise evolve and grow (Casino Royale). Every time a Bond film releases people who mostly aren't that familiar with the franchise ask the same loaded question: "Is Bond too predictable, old and dated for todays audience?" I've always replied with a resounding "hell no", and frankly taking risks like this demonstrate that there's so many unexpected places the franchise could head next, that is beyond exciting to me as a 'die hard' fan! Cheers to you and your gorgeous daughter Danielle! 😜 Just joking... everyone knows she's your beautiful niece! ❤

Love this discussion! You both make great points.. For me a weird thing happened. I've been rewatching a lot of Bond films lately, and movies I formerly had ranked very low (Octopussy, Quantum of Solace, and even Die Another Day) wee far better than I remembered. I just rewatched No Time to Die for the 3rd time, and the opposite happened. It's moving lower in my list. The acting, choreography, and scenery were great (I loved Jamaica), but I don't go to a Bond film for emotional heaviness, and I agree the villain was weak. Also, the plot was overly complicated with too many holes. The film brought back some Bond elements,, but destroyed many others.. Paloma was a high point because it brought some fun to an otherwise too serious film.
@johnrigs65403 жыл бұрын
I hear you - although I have to say No Time To Die has actually gotten better to me with each subsequent viewing - every other Bond film I’ve seen since I saw it suddenly seems better somehow! I definitely think the emotional heaviness it has makes it stand apart from traditional Bond movies and in a way - almost puts it in a different category altogether. Plus, of course, the other 24 films get extra bonus points for not blowing him up at the end.😎
@jerrymanas6713 жыл бұрын
@@johnrigs6540 haha your last comment had me laughing because I actually ranked a few of them higher now for that very reason - they didn't blow him up at the end lol. NTTD has some amazing elements and it would be much higher in my opinion if it wasn't a Bond film. The fact that it stands apart is what I didn't care for. From a pure cinematic standpoint, I'd rate it much higher than I would as a Bond film. But everyone wants something different. That's just me, I prefer the tropes.

What an insightful and engaging discussion! I have just discovered your channel, David, and am working my way through all your content. I am 68 years old, and the first Bond film I saw was Dr.No, when it appeared in cinemas, and subsequently saw all the Connery Bond films as they came out. Dr.No and Goldfinger were something so ‘new’ and surprising back then (I remember the fervour with which they were greeted), and I loved them all. Then I fell off the Bond train until the Daniel Graig era. I LOVED Casino Royal, Quantum of Solace (the editing style worked for that time, I feel), and Skyfall, and enjoy Spectre as part of the series of Craig films, although the ‘magic’ was not there. I have seen No time to die 3 times, the last in IMAX (which was absolutely spectacular, by the way!), and this film has, for me, improved on each viewing, and loved it on my second viewing. I totally agree with your analysis of the plot holes, Danielle and David, but maybe I’m the sort of viewer who lets that wash over me a little. Perhaps my love for No time to die is due a little to having no expectations coming into it, as I am pretty much a blank slate when I watch a movie, and just switch off my mind and enjoy the emotional roller coaster ride. Even on my third viewing I was very emotional at the end (and have shed a tear all three viewings). On the other hand, this is such a FUNNY movie. The way the actors deliver their lines had me chuckling and smiling so many times. The stoic, British, slightly ironic and wittily sarcastic yet seething tone of Daniel Craig’s performance really appeals to me. Well, I must thank No time to die for introducing me to your wonderful KZbin site. I am a Bond fan reborn!! Many thanks and best wishes to you both (from a new subscriber!).

My thoughts on No Time to Die, and bit of a warning: I wrote a novel. My theory is that M knew about Mathilde and he kept her existence quiet to protect her. That's why Nomi and presumably the rest of MI-6 didn't know. M also said they didn't know where Bond was and presumed he was dead. Yes, tptb literally said, "Screw it, we're going there" and chucked the formula out the window. Honestly, besides Bond dying, I am okay with it. I mean, would I like to go more back to formula for the next Bond film? Yes, but for this final chapter I was mostly okay with it. Again, besides Bond dying. I'll get more into that later. I like Bond's journey, story, and themes: Bond trusting/not being able to people and not thinking the world or people can change. I really like that. I think it's understandable and makes sense for him after everything he's gone through. Also I think it's something we can all relate to. I think Felix had to die because they wanted to show nobody was safe in this film. Jamaica, Cuba, and Paloma was all great. Dialogue was great in the film. M, Q, and Moneypenny were all fantastic. The apartment scene especially. I really hate to lose this supporting cast. :( I like the Blofeld scene. Though yeah, I also kind of wish he had been the big bad of this film. The action scenes: Matera, Cuba, Norway chase, and the stairwell fight all great. Fantastic. I don't buy that the EMP watch could have killed the nanobots, but that's my opinion. However, I do believe that Q could have found a cure eventually. I believe in him, he can fix anything. I get what you're saying about Bond and being emasculated. As for Bond only having sex with one woman, true, yes. However, I would argue that he's been to that club many times before. So he's probably made out and been with plenty of women during those 5 years. Also he wanted to have sex with Nomi when they arrived at his place and I'm sure he would have with Paloma if they had time. Maybe they did during a 3+ hour cut. My main complaint with Safin is that I want to better understand why he wants to make the world "tidier". I mean I get he wants revenge, he's obsessed with Madeleine, etc. I didn't like how let Mathilde go in my first viewing, but I would argue it's not entirely out of character since he let Madeleine go in the beginning of the film. Also, I think Safin understood Mathilde wasn't going to like or accept him, so that's another reason, he was like, "Whatever, go." I doubt many people have liked and judged him throughout his life. I really like Madeleine in this film. I wish she had told him, but I think she didn't want Bond emotionally distracted with everything going on. Also yes, she still could have been bitter/upset and needed to trust him with the most important thing in her life. Nomi was something of a surprise. I was completely prepared to dislike her, but she was an agent. I like that she was opposite of Bond, by the book, younger, less experienced, etc. They never brought up her gender or race. Well, besides the scientist and it was a bit eye-rolling, but I'll let it slide. Bond's Family: I get the family/child storyline is new territory for Bond. Some are not going to like it, especially old school fans. I get it, but I would make a case that there is a family theme all throughout the Craig Bond era. Judi Dench's M is his mother, Ralph Fiennes's M is his stepfather, Kincade is his father/mentor, Felix is his brother, Q is younger brother, Mr. White is his father-in-law, Vesper is his first love, Madeleine is his partner, etc, etc. And honestly I like it, it adds humanness and I like that Bond has someone and some happiness. He lost his parents when he was young and so many people along the way since Casino Royale, so again, I like that. Also Flemming probably would have gone there at some point if had he lived since Kissy was pregnant in the You Only Live Twice novel. If I could pick the ending, it would have been the ceremony ending. When Secret Service agents retire, I believe they get a big ceremony and there were behind the scenes photos of Craig at a ceremony. Maybe that some alternate opening since Bond is retired at the beginning, but it strikes me more as an ending. Yeah, that's the ending I wanted and again, I think he deserved a happy ending. If not then do a Dark Knight Rises type ending, but I suppose Craig didn't want to be asked if he's coming, so that was never gonna happen. Same with the Dou-Dou ending/theory. Side note, poor Mathilde in this film, she meets her father, loses him, and her stuffed animal all in 24 hours. Bond's Death: If they had to kill Bond then have him die for Queen and country, not in that completely cruel and emotional way. I mean I get the Greek mythology and I suspect Craig, the producers, and writers wanted something deeper. I get it, but I still don't like it. Also it's rather eerily similar to the pandemic, I think it made my mom mad when we all watched NTTD on PVOD last week. Finally, this movie has made me think. Honestly, I haven't thought this much about a movie since I can't remember. I don't think I've even thought about Star Wars this much in quite some time. Heck, my relationship was not this nearly complicated with the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, at least by the end. Probably because by Rise of Skywalker, I rolled my eyes at the end there and I was just, checked out "eh, whatever". I think even though I hate Bond dying and the way its done, I think it's a better ending than Rise of Skywalker. I mean it's not like Blofeld's granddaughter gets Bond's name and number.

All great points!!! For me, there's a lot that I really like about No Time to Die. The action is the best in the series. The cinematography is beautiful and colourful. The soundtrack and gun sounds were impactful. Everyone was strong in the acting department. I also felt that Madeline was fleshed out compared to SPECTRE. I really liked that Bond is vulnerable and was actually in danger the entire time. It makes him less of a superhero and more like Fleming's Bond. The references to past Bond films and Fleming's novels felt tasteful and got me happy seeing them. When it comes to flaws, the one that sticks to me the most is Safin's motivation. I found it so sudden that it went from wanting revenge against SPECTRE to being obsessed over Bond and his family. Also, I felt that Blofeld and Paloma were underused. SPECTRE was killed off way too fast and way too easily. Am I the only one felt that M was incredibly dumb in this film? I get that it was part of the story, but it got ridiculous. About the ending. At first viewing, it shocked me because I didn't expect them to do that! It was a punch in the gut as a Bond fan. However, it gave me a revelation that Daniel Craig is the Bond I truly grew up with. I recently rewatched the Brosnan films and it doesn't have the same impacts compared to the Craig films. So, watching No Time to Die multiple times really made me appreciate the ending. It was like saying goodbye to a good friend. Even though this film will remain divisive, I have to give credit to Craig for giving us an incredible performance and giving us a fresh take on James Bond. His depiction turned me into a Bond nerd, so that's why I liked this film a lot more than others. The flaws are huge but I felt that the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses. It's not the best Craig Bond film but it's far from the worst. I felt satisfied with No Time to Die being his final film. If SPECTRE was his final film, that would have continued the tradition of each actor's last film being the worst. If I had to give No Time to Die a rating out of 10, it would be an 8/10

Barbara Brocolli and Michael Wilson have the ultimate power and wouldn't do anything to hurt Bond's long term story. Even to get Craig back for one more movie. If they were dead set against his death it wouldn't have happened. I think Craig has had input on casting (Felix, Q and Paloma all had worked with him prior) and directors who have been top notch.

Having watched the full one hour seven minutes and forty seven seconds, I have to say I found myself agreeing with the both of you practically all the way through. In particular with David when, discussing Bonds demise that it really shouldn’t have been about 'winding it all up' for Craig. The story is Bond and we didn’t want or need an ending that would dot the 'I's' and cross all the 'T's' for Craig's tenure. Goodness knows where we go from here but I certainly wouldn’t want to be the one charged with creating the next story. Surely all those from M.I.6. and connected with Daniel's Bond will have to go as we can’t have them back again after having had them bid him a fond farewell. Great conversation, you two.

Fascinating discussion, lots to unpack. Re the 'unearned' use of OHMSS, that's striking given that Zimmer himself likes to quote Ridley Scott who said 'sentimentality is unearned emotion' ('Sway' podcast from Nov 15 interview with Hans Zimmer by Kara Swisher). So you'd have thought he'd be very sensitive to that. I'm in two minds about it. I feel it works beautifully in Matera but later on, it calls back the gravitas of OHMSS in ways which may be potentially jarring or at odds with this new film. Re Craig's influence, nobody in any room with Barbara Broccoli is going to get a cufflink, brand name or storyline on screen that she isn't 100% behind. And it wouldn't be the first time a film's tone or storyline was driven largely by the actor's personality just the first time we came out feeling the 5 stages of grief.

I saw this movie a second time last night, hoping that the second watch would increase my love for the film but I still didn't feel anything at the end. The film has some amazing action pieces but it just feels like a load of random action pieces put together around a very flimsy, plot which is clearly taken from other movies. The villain just wasn't strong enough for me. Rami did his best I think but it just didn't feel like a bond villain. I understand that the film is perhaps closer to the books than earlier films but sorry, this film just doesn't do it for me. I am trying real hard to love it. In many ways, I prefer Spectre.... I really hope the next bond incarnation takes us back to the standalone format and focuses on delivering solid popcorn flicks as opposed to these overblown dramas we have been getting. We come to bond films for escapism and none of Craig's films have really delivered that. Casino Royale and Skyfall probably came the closest.

Wow, I totally agree with you and your beautiful wife. By the way the two of you together make a great duo. It was good to hear a woman’s perspective. Bottle of bollinger aside you both encapsulated everything that was not quite right about ‘No Time To Die’ I love James Bond but in the film the dad thing just didn’t work, as to the ending, surly if he died then how does he come back? Like Bobby from Dallas, coming out of the shower! It was all a dream😂. Great show.

Great discussion and every enjoyable to see Danielle join you and get her take. I only saw the movie one time, and your insights will change how I view it a second time. From a first time viewing though, there was a lot of things that didn't make sense. I felt the same way as what you two said... obviously there was a lot of editing and changes made. I think a lot was left on the editing room floor that probably would have made it a better movie.

If only Madeleine and Bond had the chemistry of these two, the film might have been all the better for it...even Bond and Dou Dou had more chemistry then Bond had with Madeleine...and Bond left (the world) with Dou Dou while Madeleine left with Nomi? No wonder Craig had an intimacy coach on set...Craig and Lea in bed was almost like Roger Moore and Mayday in bed...even had more chemistry with Vesper at her grave...harsh...

Most bond gadgets tend to be used once then discarded, maybe if he'd not used the EMP to dispatch the bionic eye, we would have the alternate ending.

First of all, just discovered and love your channel. This is a fun and insightful conversation with your wife. The only point I want to make about Q being gay is that I think they did it in a cheap way where they can just edit out the “he’ll be here any minute” line for the Chinese market.

Great points which mirror my thoughts on the movie. In terms of the actors having agency over Bond i think this is a bit of a special case where there hasnt been one character like Bond that has been recast so many times and had so many sagas. You can say on screen Batman but to a similar point each iteration of Batman is different and has the directors intent behind them. So im actually fine with the director and actor having agency over the character. Also since Craig Bond is the only one that has a connecter saga to the 4 movie arc i think it was fine to have a definite ending to his Bond. Nolans Batman had a definite beginning and end and changed up alot about the character but I thought it was fine to do that. Thats the point of having different versions of the character.

Without jumping unnecessarily onto the "bring on the drunk wife" bandwagon, I could tell from the sighing that talking about JB wasn't really her bag. Even though you mentioned "seeming as you are a woman" several times, she is obviously not the girly-girl type who gets gushy about the usual 'women' things. In fact almost non of those remarks were met by a typically female response. She responded as a viewer, and any casual movie goer might do. I did enjoy some of the drinking banter you guys were having, and you are right, everyone stayed until the end. Hearing Danielle's impression of The Count from Sesame Street brought back some huge memories. It's sad that we are the last generation to appreciate what a great show that was.

Whether it was about his ego or not, I have ZERO issue with Craig or EON wanting to end his story this way - it COMPLETELY tracks with the story they were telling with the previous four movies. And there is BARELY any "love" or "family" in this or any of his four movies.....he LEFT Madeline for five years after he thinks she betrayed him...when they reunite, they have ONE night together and then he goes all out to keep them safe and prevent the spread of the Heracles project for the greater good - how was he "emasculated" exactly?? :)

There were so many different novels thrown into this mix. The poison garden is from the book”You Only Live Twice”. The other Aston Martin was from OHMSS. The other obvious references to OMHSS were many with the music and Bond saying “we’ve got all the time in the world “.

I am a female James Bond fan and I like how human and vulnerable this Bond has become. However, I think the more intimate/vulnerable scenes are not really Craig’s forté and I didnt feel he had a very good chemistry with Madeleine. Actually, I think Craig had much better chemistry with Paloma and I wanted a bit more of that because it was a good balance of action, humour and flirtyness.

Agreed that the ending, villain and the rank of where this movie is in Daniel Craig's tenure. They could've used Blofeld's bionic eyeball as a way to get him out of jail. It would bring the entire Vesper Lynd thing to a close, would've faced his past since he is Blofeld's adopted brother, and ended up with Madeline w/o a daughter. Really his tenure should've ended after Spectre. Then bring in the new actor to bring Bond out of retirement in a whole new way.

Good discussion and some nice observations, but Man... I feel like we saw a different movie. If I were to cut anything it would be like 50% of the Cuba scene. Looking at this movie as a piece of the big DC picture, the whole movie really worked for me. Including the end. Saw it 5 times.

Hi David and Danielle! 🎩 Regarding Billie Eilish, and the writing for the female roles, I agree with Danielle. It's great when you don't get the sense that Hollywood is proselytizing by shoe-horning people into roles that don't make sense, or obviously seem as if they’re checking off a box. Instead, they used scenes like Q’s apartment that shows a bit of his private life in much the same way as they did when Bond calls Eve Moneypenny in the middle of the night and Moneypenny responds, “It’s called life James. You should try it.” It makes things feel more seamless and smoothe in its presentation. Ps. Juxtaposition does a great a capella version of the song, No Time To Die. I use that one in my current Bond play lists instead of the officially released song featuring Billie Eilish. Pss. Paloma and Doo Doo sounds like a Saturday morning newspaper cartoon title😂

Great conversation. Danielle was excellent, no nonsense opinion and insight. Will she take over presenting the channel when Nomi gets announced to take over in the the next 007 film? I agree with Danielle's retro idea and Henry Cavill would be a good choice or will they break from the formula entirely and go back right to the start and do an origin story with "Silverfin" like they did with Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan to direct?

about the watch thing, I thought it was generally known that anything electronic powered not a wristwatch when hit by an EMP would be made of Explodium, as we saw with GoldenEye and Primo's eyeball
