Jeff Tweedy, author of “World Without A Song,” tells Stephen that his book wouldn’t have worked if he didn’t list some songs that he’s not fond of, even if that meant taking shots at beloved icons like Dolly Parton.

I remember seeing Wilco at the Lockn' Festival, I think 2014. They followed Willie Nelson, on a stage next to the one Willie just finished up on. Willie and band weren't even off the stage yet, and Tweedy opens the set with something like "let's hear it for Willie Nelson. An American treasure. Dolly's was great and she's an AMAZING song writer, but that song was perfectly crafted for Whitney Houston, and her beautiful and powerful voice did Dolly's song justice. Also, Whitney Houston wasn't a "Diva" and didn't do unnecessary trills, or overdo notes, runs, or riff when she recorded this song, that was only done later in live performances. And to the person who wrote that, the term "Diva" itself as an insult, is really sexist and annoying just f.y.i.

She shouldn't have written I Will Always Love You and then her manager at the time wouldn't have let her go from her contract, and her career would have died an early death. What he writes about "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," "Both Sides Now," is beautiful, and really puts you inside his head for a taste of how music affects him, and how songs can transport a thoughtful listener.

It is Whitney's version that has the dragged out notes. Tough choice, whether to slag Dolly Parton or Whitney Houston.

The headline here, as people have said, is misleading. The comments are stupid. If you want a thoughtful and discerning discussion of this book, check out the one with Nick Offerman. As for Tweedy, he’s a fan of Dolly’s. He just dislikes one song. That’s how all fans are. I’m sure Dolly knows his work, too. He’s won several Grammys. With this book, he’s not trashing anybody; he’s just trying to start a conversation with his readers about music and why we react to it the way we do. I thought it was very cool, and I thought Stephen’s approach was off base.

Wilco are one of those bands I keep going back to thinking maybe I'll like it this time, but I just don't think this guy likes strong melodies. I listen to a wilco song and then at the end I can not remember what the tune goes like.

The thing is the original is fine, it's just Jolene is a much better song. Now, I'd rather listen to 10h of someone scratching their fingernails on chalkboard than listen to 1 minute of Whitney Houston's insufferable, overplayed version of that song.

I've been listening to Wilco since 1995. Great band. "I Will Always Love You" is one of the greatest songs ever written so I disagree with Tweedy there; however, of all the more famous Beatles songs I totally agree with "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." Terrible song.
