But things on the court don't always follow the script and you need to be able to adjust. That's what you're getting paid for. And even when they do, you have to execute. It defeats the purpose of drawing up the gameplan if those exact situations happen in games and the players fail to execute.

When the Raptors' won the chip, Nick Nurse was a first year NBA head coach. Thing is, his coaching staff was mostly the same as the coaching staff from the year before. Nick Nurse was the lead assistant for a very strong organization that had major assets all over the coaching staff. Dwane Casey wasn't even a bad head coach, it's just that he was on a team that was stacked with good coaching. Also, Masai had an ability to attract talent to that team. It takes a long time to put together that kind of organization. Swapping out the head coach doesn't usually solve the coaching issue, if that's what you think it is. There's no easy fixes on this one.

I've always heard coaches deserve more of the blame in football but when it comes to basketball, baseball, and soccer it's really a player's game. Yet in the NBA come playoff time everybody tries to forget that because all of these stars are grouped together but aren't winning titles. They have the best players so it must be the coaches. Forgetting that real dynasties of the past were built over long periods of time and stayed together over 5 seasons or more.

Teams/Organizations that build teams for longevity and not for today are the ones that are successful right now. Minn, Denver, Boston, OKC, Miami. These teams have allowed their coaches to coach and they have built their teams with the draft and an occasional FA or trade here and there. Always trying to land the big star or put together the big 3 has ran its course. The league salary cap structure now, only allows for 2 max contracts (50 mil) for each team with a cap of 136 mil (141 mil in 20-25) and there is a luxury tax if you go over 178 mil. Meaning - if 2 players are making $50 mil each, your squad has to add 10 other players using about $36-40 mil - then you are paying a luxury tax. Well if 2 players are making $50 mil and 2 players are making $20 mil - you are reaching that luxury tax b4 you fill your starting 5. A lot of teams are trying to stay under that tax. That being said, if you have 3 max players on your squad (ie Phoenix) you can only fill your roster with role players. In the case of the teams mentioned above, bc they have built their teams via the draft, their players have grown within the system, developed chemistry and even the role players are good and they only have 1-2 big contracts and some moderate mid level deals. You also have to allow a coach to come on a develope a culture/expectations and that’s hard to do in 1-2 seasons. Players have build chemistry with one another, understand tendencies and execute. If a team is riddled with injuries that could take longer to everyone on the same page. However, if a coach comes in and they don’t win right away, they get fired and the process starts all over. There is RARELY a coach at any level that walks in and wins it all in year one! Doesn’t usually happen!!!!

I think that in sports in general, a lot of players will look at the coach and think, "well he was never as great a player as I am so why would I listen to him?" Well the problem with that is that coaching and playing are two very different things and just because somebody wasn't the best player in the world doesn't mean they can't be a great coach (and when you go down the list of the best coaches of all time in any sport, the overwhelming majority were not previously "great" players).

You can take any coach out of history and give them the roster of the last place team and they are not going to win anything with it. Coaching matters, but only so much. Talent matters more. Coaching might come into play a little more when both teams are supremely talented, then you might see the difference in coaching. But if you have a losing program, it's not the coach's fault. The thing that bothers me about the players from my generation is that they have all conveniently forgotten all of the mistakes they made when they played. They don't remember arguing with their coaches and getting many of them fired. They don't remember the innumerable times they played lazy, missed boxing out on a rebound,or throwing stupid passes. This is the evil of social media. Everybody puts on a black robe and grabs a gavel. People who have never studied a subject, never practiced a discipline, never competed in competitive sports but they're all expert's who eagerly sit in judgment of those who actually mastered those things. Rasheed Wallace was a lazy, big mouth, undisciplined, argumentative player who routinely missed assignments and regularly cost his team because he was threatening the refs. He spent more time trying to be an enforcer than mastering his craft. The same goes for Bonzi Wells. These old heads have selective memories. If they were playing today, they would find out just how athletically superior the players are today. As I've said, it's easy to critique and criticise those you will never have to compete against.

So l would imagine a lot of the coaches interviewing for the job will know that they will probably only have the job for about 2-3 years realistically. Honestly, I don’t think the Lakers are in the position to win a championship without some major changes to their roster given their best player is turning 40 years old later this year.
